A curl sponge is a hair styling tool used to create well-defined coils, curls, and twists. It is usually thick and has clear-cut holes in them, which can be big, small, or medium. When used on moisturized, detangled, slightly damp hair, the sponge gently rubs the hair in a slow circular motion, creating twists, curls, or coils. When coupled with the circular motion of your hands, the holes in the sponge create a perfect coil.
To use a curl sponge, wet and detangle your hair before using it. When using a hair sponge, follow these steps: wet and detangle your hair, and spray water using a water bottle on your hair for moisture and fluff hair upwards with your hands. Spray CANTU COMEBACK CURL on your hair to fight frizz.
Starting on slightly damp hair, rub the sponge over your head in circular motions until you reach your desired curly look. There are many tutorials and tips for using a sponge on 4C hair, and it is essential to follow the instructions provided to ensure a smooth and natural look.

📹 How To Use A Curl / Twists Sponge, Tutorial For Long Natural Hair | BiancaReneeToday
Hair tutorial on how to use a curl or twists sponge for long natural hair! This can be used on both men and women as long as you …
For me (small 4C afro): 1. mixing eco gel and some jamaican castor oil in my hands and then massaging into my hair, 2. using the flat side of the sponge to completely twist up all my hair, 3. then using the textured side completely all over my hair to loosen the twists Edit: turns out the sponge has been breaking my ends this whole time and keeping my 4c hair short 🤦🏽♂️ lol if this is happening to you as well do this instead: 1. Pat coconut oil on your hair and then massage into your scalp 2. Use the scalp massager and it twists up your hair just like a curl sponge but further down to the roots for deeper twists, also better blood circulation and no breakage 3. Could then also use a wide tooth pick to lift your twists slightly but don’t comb all the way through
I’m confused. What is the difference in the look of the hair after each side is used? I’m buying one for my son and wanted to see how to use first. I like the way it looks but I don’t see much difference in using the bumply side compared to the alternate side with the holes? And should I be putting any sort of product in his hair before using the sponge? Water, detangler, moisturizing oil stuff?
P.S. those are good to use only so often. It does help “bring out” the curl, it was meant for dreading the hair. Every one hair type is a bit different, so you’ll have to gauge it. With that being said, if you use it quite a bit, without picking your hair from time to time, it can become knotted and single curls that once popped will become intertwined with each other, appearing to look like mini dreads. If that’s the look you’re going for, then by all means. But if you want just the curl, use the nudred or magic curl here and there, and not on a daily basis like I did. Great article.
Love the article, But three slight things. You can.move the sponge much much slower over the head/hair & you.don’t have to press down on the head/hair at all. Try it that way. {A very light hand. no pushing down on the head/hair, & move the sponge slower}. The longer the hair is. it’s the harder to sponge the hair. then you’ll see the difference. Bless.
Hey Bianca Renee I did exactly what you said, followed the instructions step by step word for word and my hair is really twisted!! Thanks for making this article bc used to I just kept my hair cut low but I’ve always wanted to do this hair style so not 3 months I started letting it grow till the fro was pretty big and then got it cut in this particular style and I’m very pleased. Keep it up!
For all the ladies (guys as well) that have 4b -4c hair, Your hair texture is unique love it and learn to live with it there’s nothing wrong with it . Sure you have shrinkage problems, dryness constantly but once you stretch it out I guarantee you can achieve the same looks as 3A-4A …maybe even rock the natural look better This is coming from a young lady who was born with 3C hair that eventually became a mixture of 3c -4a due to the chemicals I was always putting in my hair
#1..texturizer is just another fancy name for a perm. It is not a natural process. #2…the sponge should be done in a clockwise motion this way follows the natural direction of your hair. Depending on hair texture, it may be necessary to add some conditioner on the sponge. Continuously rubbing the sponge on the hair after curls have been formed can cause unnecessary stress to hair which can easily lead to breakage Certified Natural Hair Stylist
You do not need a sponge to do this you can do it with your hands, and seriously this boy needs some damn moisturizer. Here’s the steps wash or co-wash….1). Olive oil & WATER, 2). Leave in conditioner, 3). Curl putty or pomade that’s a moisturizer then a curl activator gel that has sheen and hold to it, the hair should remain damp through out the process, through out all this make sure you are rubbing your hair in the same direction through out… The semi hardening gel will make your curls snap back and the oil makes your hair healthy and look NOT DRY like this foo
I find your behavior disturbing. Why didn’t you make personal contact with your client’s hair? Was the young man’s hair dirty or smelly? Typically, anytime someone is doing a demonstration on another person’s head/hair, there is contact. You really shouldn’t be so distant with your clients. They can sense your negative vibes.
