In Pathfinder, 0 level spells are unlimited and do not require expendable slots. This means that players can use them for up to four (or more) spells per day. However, some spellcasters may wish for 0-level spells to have more oomph, especially on the Divine Side. In contrast, in D and D 3.5, zeroth-level spells (cantrips, knacks, and orisons) are not expended by using it, allowing unlimited usage for four or more characters.
Spellcasters cannot treat 0-level spells as at-will powers, as they are memorized and know. They cannot sacrifice their 0 level spell slots to fuel abilities, and they cannot pay what they don’t have. The question remains whether metamagicked 0-levels are infinite usage or if they do not.
The rules state that spells are “cast like any other spell”, with the exception of 0-level spells, which are virtually unlimited. All spellcasters are limited to a certain number of spells cast every sleep cycle, except for 0-level spells, also known as cantrips (arcane) or orisons (divine).
Apiates follow the same rules regarding level 0 spells, but they do not actually SAY that they can. Level 0 spells are more capable and their use is unlimited, but so is everything else in Pathfinder. Feats come more frequently, HP is not unlimited, and cantrips can be improved using sneak attack.
In Pathfinder, spellcasting classes can cast an unlimited number of 0 level spells per day, unlike in D and D 3.5. In 3.5, 0-level spells are the same as other spells, but they don’t get extra slots. For save DC purposes, they remain 0 level spells unless the metamagic used is Heighten Spell.
