Do Magic Mushrooms Increase Intelligence?

A new study has found that psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms, can bolster brain connections between self and memory, opening the mind to change. People who take tiny amounts of LSD, “magic mushrooms”, and related drugs report a range of benefits, from more creativity to improved psychological well-being. However, microdoses typically do not yield any benefits. Magic mushrooms mimic serotonin’s affinity for the 5-HT2A receptor, which is responsible for daydreaming, remembering, and other cognitive functions. Psilocybin, one of the psychoactive ingredients in magic mushrooms, works its magic by desynchronizing the brain network responsible for a person’s sense of self.

Psilocybin can reshape cells in the brain and shows potential for treating addiction or depression. However, scientific studies so far have failed to find any benefits from microdosing, leaving many people skeptical. A new analysis of a new study found that psilocybin helps “open up” depressed people’s brains even weeks after use.

Psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin, LSD, ayahuasca, and Ecstasy, along with anesthetics like ketamine, can enhance a user’s neuroplasticity within hours. Microdosing adherents claim that taking small amounts of psychedelic drugs can boost mood and creativity, but we still don’t know its full potential. Researchers have shed light on how psychedelic compounds in drugs can distort the sense of space, time, and self during a trip.

  • Not so sure about micro dosing. I’ve had more luck with macro dosing. Taking 2 g’s – 3 g’s daily will absolutely turn the world on its head. Everything I wished I was capable of doing and saying wasn’t just possible. I needed to say and do everything I had been holding back. I macro dosed for 2 months. During this 2 month period I fired my business partner, fired half of my employees, and I took control of a series of what I thought to be insurmountable debts that my ex partner decided to wrack up and ignore. Not macro dosing at the moment but while I was, everything and everyone I interacted with seemed transparent. I could decipher someone’s intentions almost immediately. There was at least one draw back though…. My emotions were dampened and I was kind of an a** hole.

  • I’m a veteran, alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.

  • I’ll be forever grateful for psychedelics. They helped me “rewire” my brain. Long story short, I got Tourettes syndrome, not in my wildest dream did I thought it was possible to locate what triggers my tics and many reasons behind them. It was like I could use the overheating brain signals to send the tics outside my body and forcing the impulse in the brain to just stay there, almost cooking. But after a while, it was cooling of. Sounds very easy, takes incredible amount of willpower but LSD, somehow, helped me locate why many of my tics is there. Like went straight into my subconcious and saw it in a way that I didn’t knew was possible. Psychedelics is really incredible.

  • I had an abusive and alienating childhood, and a tough start with adulthood. When I look back, it seemed like my mind was so stuck in a dissociative and depressed state. I could not feel anything except for hollowness, constant misery, and unable to see future beyond it. In my very early twenties, I had a group of work friends who got together, half of whom were trying Psilocybin mushrooms for the first time. It wasn’t a super-ultra-big dose or anything. It was a life-changing experience for me. It reminded me of what it felt to feel alive; to be amazed with life again. It made me feel human. I still struggle with depression and have help with it now, but I’ve been able to remember that it’s possible to be another way because of psychedelics to get that help after too many lost years.

  • I’ve been stuck in a crippling depression for 2 years due to my mom’s unexpected cancer diagnosis and sudden death. I’ve always struggled with depression since childhood, but this time around has been the worst I’ve experienced. Magic mushrooms saved my life. I was starting to feel suicidal so I decided I needed to “take a trip”. I literally felt my brain being rewired telling me that I don’t have to be sad ALL THE TIME. I cried so many tears, but I wasn’t sad, it just felt like a release. Afterwards I felt like 1000 lbs of stress and sadness were lifted off my shoulders. I felt happy and light hearted for the first time in so long. I feel like I have a new chance at life, I just couldn’t get there on my own.

  • Not enough mention of the risks associated with taking them were mentioned, reading the comments highlights the positive experiences most people have had, but you have to be spiritually aware, self-aware, because the things you’re going to see or experience can shock you so much you won’t be able to function properly again, ontological shock, disassociation, not know what is real/not real anymore (waking up from a dream and thinking it was real), you can see things that traumatise you…. People who are unprepared can jump out of windows, doing it in a safe place (not in a high rise building for one thing), among people who you trust, being in the right frame of mind, etc, there’s so much preparation you have to do before hand. There would have been a whole culture in place, a community of people who should be deciding if you are even ready for that journey.

  • Took LSD for the first time on Halloween decades ago. Had a friend who inked Vampirella comics and his entire house had full size characters on the walls. EVERYTHING was moving. Had a good chat with a bunch of characters. Never managed to get Vampirella’s number. She flirted but that was it….. Took it twice. 2nd time a bunch of us went hiking down a river bed to climb a waterfall. It was 20,000 feet high but we made it to the top. LOL. You know that part in LOTRs where the trees came alive.. Yep. Had a nice long chat with them as well…. Changed my outlook on life to this very day. 2 OUTSTANDING trips for me but not for a few girls in our group. They had a REALLY bad trip. Decided to never take it again. Left it as an extremely enjoyable and memorable experience.

  • DMT, LSD, and psilocybin mushrooms are truly remarkable. A few years back, I was grappling with severe depression and mental health issues, and was diagnosed with BPD. It wasn’t until a friend suggested psilocybin mushrooms that things began to change for me. It was a lifesaver, and I’ve been completely clean for 8 years now.

  • I credit Psychedelic Mushrooms for helping me face my fears and work them out in my head. When I come down after my initial wave I suddenly laugh and realized what a waste of time it is to catastrophize on everything. I’m suddenly left the next day with a feeling that a door has unlocked and opened in my mind. Also the few days following with the afterglow. I felt much more “Enlightened and intelligent”.

  • Honestly mushrooms made me feel like I don’t even need cigarettes, like it just reset my mind to the point before I started smoking. 😅 I just start again cause I’m so used to it and genuinely addicted to “smoking”, not so much cigarettes. But the addiction kind of has come back, it’s really a weird thing to go through.

  • lsd melted all concepts, categories and barriers I had. I felt like a child, enjoying everything without a filter. Realizing that ANY line and any border w draw conceptually does not exists, changed my life forever. I am not judging this as good or bad – it was solely an experience. The worst thing we can do is NOT talk and forbid things by default, for everyone.

  • I use 0.3 gram magic mushrooms 2 hours before I ride or race motocross. My laptimes dropped by 4 seconds per lap, this happened immediately and consistantly per lap, which is huge in racing. I am more present, my balance and reaction time has been like never before. I never tried any higher doses than 1 gram and I don’t feel the need for it. Also, my energy level is improved and my drive for life is back. Please do some research into action sports and psilocybin. As I said, I showed improvements in a flash without putting in more practise and my times have not changed within 5 years, but now all of a sudden there are huge improvents, like my brain is younger and learn faster. Oh and I am 41 years old now, so things should actually start to slow down.

  • A take Psilocybin shrooms and it was amazing that can’t really imagine how the world can be. After the trip you had like a dream on Acient world, you understand that you should never worried in life just chill find a solution and work for it. and its really improve my well being. Psychedelics are amazing and powerful made of God.

  • I tried psychedelics for the first time in my 50’s (mushrooms, LSD and 5MEO-DMT). For those who have never tried them, they can’t possibly understand how profound the impact can be. It is like trying to describe color to a blind person. Insights from 5 years ago are still with me today. I have no fear of death and normal life stressors that used to grip me into depression don’t have the same kind of hold on me. I am a better husband, father and person. These aren’t drugs that need to be taken long term for lasting effects. One trip can be enough to break the ego’s grip forever. I would caution younger people however to be careful. IMO these are not party drugs. They are more akin to medicine or even a sacrament. Something to be done a few times as an adult to reset the brain into a more functional state. Abusing them can have lasting negative effects on your life. Use them responsibly and they can radically improve your life.

  • If anyone can get back to me !! I took shrooms 5-6 years ago had a bad trip since then 3 months later got really bad anxiety and depression which was back in 2017-2018 now 2023 I still struggle take medications, it’s been so hard over the years but I still try to make the best of it ! Please can someone point me to the right direction ☹️😞

  • I had a bad stuttering problem, after a dose of 4 grams of shrooms, I developed a better understanding of myself and my words and my opinions. I no longer have that stutter. Psychedelics should not be illegal. But the powers that be don’t want their population to think freely and become fully aware of their environment.

  • LSD saved me from a benzo addiction I was struggling at the time with Xanax and I took a tab and sometime later had an experience where I saw myself from the past (in the exact same position) contemplating my addiction I was perusal myself and besides over my left hand shoulder was a floating ball an orb that was golden bright and somewhat transparent but I don’t remember it exactly. But it felt like god But anyways that experience gave me the strength that I was being supported by god I’m not even particularly religious but going from an Athiest and through multiple experiences with feeling a connection to something bigger I have became more spiritual

  • I do shrooms somewhat frequently, a few times a year when I have access (WTH is up with goverments and people who think they can tell us what we can do with ourselves?). They are great. Sometimes hard to deal with, especially if you’re lonely or alone as I’ve been for so many years. They really do help you shift how you think though and start to see things others just haven’t considered and nor would I have had it not been for psychedelics. MDMA is by far my favored flavor of psychedelic. Someone make that stuff legal and accesable, please.

  • I did 7 grams of magic shrooms and it definitely did some rewiring/fixing connections. It was intense, don’t do that alone. Be with a friend or friends you love. Have some nature nearby. Water and a place to lay down. My body felt like I needed to constantly stretch. My mind was playing scenes of my future life through my head. I recommend it if you have PTSD and brain damage like I do.

  • I have a panic disorder it comes out of nowhere in the early 80s i took LSD ok for the first few hours then panic kicked in extreme anxiety Nicotine does it to me as well Funny enough alcohol doesn’t cause any fear or panic just say if you suffer from anxiety symptoms dont take drugs Im assuming the drugs they’re prescribing all in small doses or something
