The debate surrounding the use of ranged magic attacks in conjunction with sneak attacks has been ongoing. For instance, a wizard cantrip, such as “firebolt”, can be used to gain a guaranteed advantage while attacking a target in dim light or darkness. However, this ability is not applicable to spell attacks, as it requires Dexterity-based weapon attacks.
At level 10, an arcane trickster can add sneak attack damage to any spell that deals damage if the targets are flat-footed. This additional damage only applies to spells that deal hit point damage and is of the same type as the spell. Sneak attacks can also be triggered when using a spell attack.
As of Hotfix 5, Arcane Trickster sneak attack is bugged, and it will randomly vanish from the character. However, it can still be used to enhance stealth and agility skills. In Pathfinder 1, a level 10 arcane trickster can sneak attack with spells, such as Chain Lightning, which adds sneak attack damage.
Arcane Tricksters gain the ability to cast Wizard spells to enhance their abilities, trick their foes, and defend themselves more effectively. As of Patch 1, sneak attacks with ranged spell attacks requiring Attack Rolls to determine whether you hit, such as “Fire Bolt”. Hideous laughter and finding familiar allow you to gain advantage more easily on your attacks, which in turn allows you to sneak attack more.
In conclusion, the debate surrounding the use of ranged magic attacks in conjunction with sneak attacks has been ongoing. While sneak attacks can be effective in combat, they require careful balances and careful selection of spells.

Multiclass characters can also use an Arcane Focus if they have adopted one of the new 2024 subclasses, such as the Eldritch Knight subclass or the Arcane Trickster subclass. In this text, the player learns to cast spells as an Arcane Trickster, following the rules outlined in the Player’s Handbook. They have three cantrips: Mage Hand and two other cantrips of their choice from the Arcane spell list. 📹 D&D 3 5 Arcane Trickster Arcane + Sneak Attack (A Deeper Dive)
In this video I take a look at the Arcane Trickster and look more closely at their ability to combine the arcane arts with sneak attack.
There’s one very good reason that I’m a proponent of Unseen Seer: Advanced Learning. In the PHB2, there’s a spell called Hunter’s Eye. It’s normally a Ranger level 2 spell, but Advanced Learning allows an Unseen Seer to learn ANY Divination spell. Swift action cast, 1 die of sneak attack per 3 caster levels. And since an Unseen Seer is likely to have a caster level higher than its character level for divinations, they can have (at will) BETTER sneak attack than a rogue of their level! At level 15, it’s not hard for an Unseen Seer to have caster level 18 for divinations. Which means they can sneak attack with 11d6 sneak attack. And that’s without pushing it really hard, which means that’s better than a 20th level rogue! Combine with Persist Spell and they can do it all day long in exchange for a single 8th level spell slot.
