Can Spells Be Cast When An Opponent Is Up Hold Onto?

In MTG, players can cast spells or activate abilities during their upkeep. The default keys for holding full control are Ctrl + Shift, which will keep full control until turned off. Another option is to set a stop on your opponent’s upkeep, which allows you to cast whatever spells you want whenever you want. However, without flash, you are limited to instants before a “beginning of your upkeep” triggered ability resolves.

Priority determines which player can take actions at any given time, unless a spell or ability instructs a player to take an action. Players with quickening and act of treason can cast quickening and act of treason in response to an overlord’s trigger, but the trigger on the stack is still controlled by your opponent. Timing can be everything, and you can cast instant spells or activate abilities at the end of each step and phase where players get priority, including the post-combat main phase.

It is not possible to cast instant spells or activate abilities during the untap step, as it would not make sense to stop there every time. Players do not receive priority until the upkeep step after any “at the beginning of your upkeep” triggered abilities are put on the stack.

In MTG, your opponent has the ability to cast instants during your upkeep. Your first chance at priority during an opponent’s turn is after the first time they pass during their Upkeep step. You can do anything at instant speed during your upkeep, but you cannot cast creatures without flash or sorceries since you are limited to instant-speed spells and abilities.

If they can be cast on your opponent’s turn, during the second main phase, you can cast them. No player receives priority during the untap step, so no spells can be cast or resolve, and any ability that triggers a trigger is not available.

Can you maintain concentration and cast a spell?

The casting of a spell that requires concentration will automatically conclude the previous concentration spell, thus enabling the caster to cast any new spell without it.

Can sorcery be played anytime?

Sorceries and instants are two types of spells that are grouped together as “spells” in the Comprehensive Rules (September 20, 2024— Duskmourn: House of Horror). Sorceries are never put onto the battlefield, but take effect when their mana cost is paid and the spell resolves, and are immediately put into the owner’s graveyard. They share the same timing restrictions as all permanent spell types, only being cast during the player’s main phase and when nothing else is on the stack.

Effects checking if a spell was cast “anytime a sorcery couldn’t have been cast” only check if the spell’s controller cast it without priority, during a different phase, or while another object was on the stack.

Can you cast spells while restrained?

In Dungeons and Dragons, a character can still attack and cast spells while restrained. This condition is used to stop monsters in their tracks and is useful when dealing with enemies in battle. The rules of the restrained condition include causing the condition, casting spells, and escaping it when used against the character. Although it can be inconvenient, it is a useful tool in combat. In D and D 5e, a character can be restrained while making a saving throw, and the rules for escaping the restrained condition are detailed in the guide.

Can you cast a spell while maintaining concentration?

In order to maintain concentration on a single spell at a time, it is necessary to conclude the concentration on the initial spell without taking any action before casting the subsequent spell.

Can I cast a spell while holding a weapon?

The Warcaster feat permits the performance of somatic spell components even when weapons or a shield are being used in one or both hands, thereby indicating that the term “weapons” is plural.

Can you cast instants during opponents turn?

Instants are the only card type in Magic that has no timing restrictions, allowing players to play them at any time with priority. They can be cast as a spell using the stack and follow the actions stated in its rules text. Instant subtypes are a single word and are listed after a long dash, with each word after the dash being a separate subtype. Instants can have multiple subtypes, and they cannot enter the battlefield.

If a player states they can do something “any time they could cast an instant” or “only as an instant”, it means only that the player must have priority. Effects that would preclude a player from casting an instant spell do not affect their capability to perform that action, unless the action is actually casting an instant spell.

Can you cast spells during an opponents upkeep?

You can respond to upkeep abilities as long as you have priority, which is given first to the active player. After they put a spell or pass priority, the opponent gets their chance before the stack resolves. You cannot skip your upkeep, but you can move through it without doing anything by passing priority and having no triggers or spells on the stack. A special ability on Gibbering Descent does force you to conditionally skip the step, but it is a rare sight and might belong on the worst art list. If you forget an upkeep trigger, you should ask an available judge, which may depend on the game’s rules. If the trigger is negative for the offending player, a penalty may still be enforced.

Can I play instants during upkeep?

The game begins with the untap step, where players untap all tapped permanents. The upkeep step allows players to cast instants and activate abilities. The draw step requires drawing a card from the library, and the player who goes first skips the draw step on their first turn.

The first major phase allows players to cast sorceries, instants, creatures, artifacts, enchantments, and planeswalkers, and activate abilities. Players can play a land during this phase, but only one land can be played during their turn.

The combat phase begins with the beginning of combat, where players cast instants and activate abilities. They decide which untapped creatures will attack and which player or planeswalker they will attack. The opponent decides which untapped creatures will block the attacking creatures. Players can cast instants and activate abilities.

The combat damage step assigns combat damage to the defending player, planeswalker, blocking creature, or blocking creature. If an attacking creature is blocked by multiple creatures, the damage is divided among them. Players can cast instants and activate abilities.

The end of combat phase allows players to cast instants and activate abilities. The game is played in a two-player format, with each player having the advantage of going first in the draw step.

Can you play a sorcery before upkeep?

The Comprehensive Rules (September 20, 2024—Duskmourn: House of Horror) states that in multiplayer games using the shared team turns option, a modified rule is used. If it’s day and no player on the previous turn’s active team casts a spell during that turn, it becomes night. If it’s night and any player on the previous turn’s active team casts two or more spells during the previous turn, it becomes day. If it’s neither day nor night, the check doesn’t happen and remains neither.

When can you cast sorcery spells?

Sorceries and instants are spells that can only be cast during the player’s main phases and when the stack is empty. Instants can be cast at any time, including during other players’ turns and while another spell or ability is waiting to resolve. Before the introduction of the stack in 6th Edition, there was another type of spell called an “Interrupt”, which could be played at any time but only allowed players to respond to interrupts with other interrupts.

In Magic lore, the player is a “planeswalker”, a wizard who can travel between different realms or universes. Planeswalker cards represent scaled-down versions of other players, with their decks represented by their abilities. Most planeswalkers are legendary and subject to the “legend rule”, where a player controls more than one legendary planeswalker with the same name, choosing one and placing the other in their owner’s graveyard.

  • Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love all of SPBKASO’s content, it got me back into magic in the first place. That said, I cannot understate how absolutely golden every one of Phil’s articles are. I don’t typically comment on articles, but I am now because I want to make sure both the algorithm and MTGGoldfish know that his articles are S+++++++ tier, I don’t care how few and far between they are. The quality speaks for itself!

  • I uses to play selesnya life gain last year and ended up getting mached with mono white angels. The game on arena lasted for 3 hours with both me and the opponent swinging in for >1000 damage a turn in the engame. Game ended because i ran out of card in my deck. Still one of my fondest arena games ever

  • Always glad to see a new Brewer’s Kitchen article! Have you been playing any of the no banlist Historic? I built a pretty gross Simic ramp deck with Oko, Nexus of Fate, and Agent of Treachery (Yorion as companion, of course). Seems like a very Phil deck, lol. Also funny thing about Oko now – using his +1 on a permanent you control warns you, meaning they view it as a negative effect now, despite them originally designing it with the intention for you to primarily use the +1 on your own permanents (which is why they didn’t realize how busted Oko was).

  • I run into a glitch like that often when the game grinds to a halt in a match on mobile and I restart the client, throwing me back into the match with an Ajani avatar and no emotes or canned phrases. It will often be in the middle of my opponent’s turn, but it will allow me to drop a land, which then becomes bugged.

  • This is a saucy aggro deck. But a lot of the time when I play mill decks I get matched against someone using the most powerful card in M:tG – Gaea’s Blessing. So I always pack a way to strip them out of the opponent’s deck. I think you’re the only person I’ve heard pronounce Smeagol correctly, or maybe it’s just that your version of it is the best.

  • I’m an extremely inexperienced programmer that is still in college, so take this complete guess with a grain of salt: I think what’s happening here is a mistake in the code leading turn passing to occur before the end of the game. I suspect that there is a function called that executes and checks events, then at the end it checks your timer, but if your timer is exhausted it goes to letting you declare attackers. That’s where the problem likely lies. There’s absolutely a function being called after your timer runs out to let you declare attackers. But the function of attacking is preceded by a pass of turn for some reason So instead of what should be: >Time runs out >Allow declaring attackers >Check win cases >If win cases not met, person without time loses What’s actually happening is: >Time runs out > Something occurs that triggers being allowed to still declare attackers in a state that would previously end in a lost game state > The code line of losing the game is skipped > Next turn starts But even though it’s the turn of person who should who’s in control, the game thinks it’s still attacking. It can’t resolve that phase, so priority (and ability to do anything) is never passed to the opponent, but their rope still triggers. The game sees it as being in the player’s attack declaration phase, so the opposing player is not allowed to do anything. If any competent programmers out there can correct me, I’d appreciate to know where and why I’m wrong! I always love to learn

  • So, Brewers Kitchen has been a part of Goldfish for a while now. I’ve been doing a good job at keeping my opinions to myself but I just can’t do it any longer. I have to let it out. So here’s my complaint: I wish there were 10 of you so there could be way more Brewers Kitchen articles. You make the best jank articles on the planet and I need more of it! This was great, thanks for listening to my rant and making the article.

  • This is why i never play any 60 card format in Arena anymore. It’s just hate/removal/counter spell tribal cancer. Then those players act like they are gods at magic lol. What a joke. The amount of stuff y’all would miss in a real paper game where things don’t remind you about everything etc is baffling. This deck is a disease on an already rigged ass game. Great job.
