Can Strom Function Using Copied Spells?

In the game of Grapeshot, two abilities trigger during the zone transition. One from Grapeshot’s own Storm and the other from Super Cloven Casting are placed on the stack on top of Grapeshot. Storm is a triggered ability that functions on the stack, putting a copy of the spell onto the stack for each other spell that was cast. It only triggers when a spell with storm is cast, and it resolves first. Copies are placed directly on the stack, not “played” (cast), so Storm only triggers when you first hard-cast a spell.

Copying a spell with storm requires as many counterspells as your opponent has copied spells, which is only possible through Flusterstorm. The Storm ability is a cast trigger, meaning after you successfully cast your storm spell, there is a trigger that accompanies it. This trigger is what makes the copies.

Copying a spell with storm will have storm, but copying the spell will not make Storm trigger. Copying a spell is not the same as casting it. Each storm spell with a target allows you to change the target for each copy of that spell. Both copy effects copy the original spell, not the copies made by the other.

Storm is a keyword that only triggers when casting spells, not copying them. Sigil Tracer will copy the spell, and the copies will have the same targets as the spell they’re copying unless you choose new ones. You may change any number of the targets, including all of them.

📹 What IS Storm?!

Storm is a mechanic so broken that it’s the go-to example of a mechanic that will never get printed in a Standard set again.

Do copied spells count as spells?

A copy of a spell or ability is controlled by the player under whose control it was placed on the stack. A copy of a spell is itself a spell, even without a spell card associated with it. A copy of an ability is itself an ability. Copy effects create or change one object into a copy of another, often targeting creatures. This mechanic was introduced in Alpha, on the cards Clone and Vesuvan Doppelganger. The exact result of a copy effect is often confusing, as it ignores temporary changes and creates only the printed qualities of the original.

Does storm work with copied spells?

The storm count is the number of spells cast in a turn, which includes fizzled or countered spells. The player must keep track of the storm count, either by keeping an accurate tally in their head or using a d20 dice. The spell count applies to anything you can cast, including creatures, artifacts, enchantments, planeswalkers, instants, and sorceries. This allows you to wrack up a high storm count in a turn.

However, lands, tokens, and abilities are not spells and are not cast. The player must be considerate of their playgroup by keeping an accurate tally or using a d20 dice to track the spells cast that turn. In summary, the storm count is a crucial aspect of the game.

Can you counter storm copies?

A spell countered with storm will not affect copies, as the ability that creates them can be countered by any effect that can counter a triggered ability. This prevents copies from being added to the stack.

Does storm count as casting?

Storm copies are not cast; thus, they do not generate their own storm copies and are not counted by other storm spells. Cards such as Twincast, which are capable of replicating a spell with the Storm mechanic, merely result in the generation of a single novel spell.

What if a spell has storm twice?

The text posits that in the event of a spell comprising multiple instances of Storm, each instance is treated as a discrete entity, necessitating the casting and resolution of Crackling Spellslinger prior to the casting of Elemental Eruption.

Does Orvar trigger on copied spells?

Sea Gate Stormcaller copies spells, but doesn’t trigger Orvar, the All-Form because they care about spells being cast. You only get a single Stormcaller per targetting spell, similar to Precursor Golem. Some instants and sorcery target permanents you control, with many having built-in replacement draws or multiple casting options like flashback, rebound, jump-start, buyback, or cipher. Some cards target creatures or some variations of permanents, such as Thermal Flux targeting any permanent or Enervate targeting artifact, creature, or land.

Orvar, the All-Form allows you to target a land and copy it, providing an incredible quantity and quality of land ramp in the deck. There are 17 cards that can target lands, costing between 1-3 mana and either having a draw effect or being able to be cast multiple times.

Can you kick copied spells?

A spell with an additional cost paid is “kicked,” which signifies that it cannot be paid more than once. A permanent with a kicker ability cannot be placed without the casting of a spell, and the copying of a kicked spell also results in its kick.

How does storm work in MTG?

Storm is a keyword ability that creates a copy of a spell when cast, for each spell cast before it in the current turn. It is known for its powerful nature in decks that can cast many cheap spells in a turn. Storm is the creator of the Storm Scale, which measures the likelihood of a mechanic returning to the Standard format. In 2012, head designer Mark Rosewater created the Storm Scale after receiving a question about the chance of another mechanic returning on a scale of Storm-10. He considered Storm to be one of the most broken mechanics ever and considered it the least likely mechanic to return to the Standard format.

Does storm count for prowess?

Storm copies do not count for prowess in Magic, a popular game with over four million players worldwide. WotC constantly improves the game by introducing new mechanics in every set, ensuring players never get bored and always have new ways to enjoy the game. However, not all mechanics are created equally, and some are more powerful than others. Some are even called “broken” and never seen in new sets. One such mechanic, Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest, has been considered oppressive in some formats and has only been printed in a handful of sets to keep it in check.

Does copying a spell book destroy it?

The spell scroll is invariably consumed during the process of copying a spell to the spell book, irrespective of whether the check is successful or unsuccessful. This indicates that the spell has been successfully copied.

Do copied spells trigger cascade?

Do copied spells trigger cascade?

Cascade is a triggered ability introduced in Alara Reborn, which allows players to cast a spell with cascade by exileing non-land cards from the top of their library until a non-land card with a mana value less than the cascading spell is cast. This card can be cast without paying its mana cost, and all exiled cards that weren’t cast will be placed in a random order on the bottom of the library. Countering the original spell doesn’t counter the cascade ability.
