This is a very good article! For a beginner there are so many things that are confusing with learning the meaning of the cards, but it’s a necessary step. You have to learn a whole new system, with its own culture and history, and you have made a very good lesson! I remember how I struggled with memorising all the cards, 40 years ago. Don’t be nervous if you for some reason put the deck down for some time. My experience was that I could take the deck up after some time and all the knowledge had internalised! I knew more than I thought I knew when I started up again – it’s impossible to stay away from tarot once you started! And you will collect decks, you will never get satisfied, but that only mean that you and your intuition grow in knowledge, and you will get drawn to new kinds of decks! As a long time reader I can say that you read the cards more with your intuition as time goes, you interpret not only with what you know but what you’ve learned over time, and that pushy little knowledge that makes you know what you really shouldn’t know, but what is true nonetheless! I did two reading over the weekend I and my people were blown away how it read them so well. I found out with the cards that someone has two relationships, a new one and an old one, and she’s still hanging on…. He was shocked cause I had no way of knowing it, and it was true. He got teary eyed while I was reading for him, he got emotional about what’s we saw.
I will apologize for being so long-winded here, but your sharing blew my mind! Over the years I’ve watched my share of vids like this and to me, there’s none better. Hard to believe you were just learning at the time. Bravo! My journey with the cards has been long and flowy. Oh my life, my brain. I couldn’t do it like everyone was teaching. I either got bored or went into overwhelm, so I bounced about, shifting as necessary giving myself permission to play with the cards, getting familiar, reading for myself. Over the years, hehe, yah years, I accumulated quite a collection of Oracle and Tarot decks. I signed up for many courses only to leave them unfinished when I hit that wall that got my stomach turning. I’m 66 and the door just opened for me to do Biddy Tarot’s course. I started last week as an experienced Beginner, hehe. I can at least recognize cards but meanings just haven’t stuck. Taking a detour from my studies to explore different teachings with respect to Card meanings and ways to create stories from the cards, I feel as though something’s cracked open in me. I have to consider energetic shifts of late, and Divine Timing. Just before your vid, I was perusal a quick-paced Master Class on, How to create stories from Tarot. I come from a family of storytellers, but I struggled to tell stories to my kids, Just sayin’;o). Man, she was fast! Storylines popped as she shifted cards. I’ve not seen anything like it. Potentially overwhelming, I did catch her flow and for sure was activated, I’ll say;0).

I am learning/relearning the Tarot as well and have been trying for 1 month to cut through the many posts of varied and well-meaning individual interpretations of the cards. For the flowers in the 4 of Cups, I think they could also represent knowledge or skills learned in the past from an older person. Which is why there is this giving in the picture. According to C.G. Jung, in the analysis of dreams (the symbolism of the Tarot is very close to that found in dreams), plants in gardens or in pots, which are cultivated, stand for culture and education. But in reverse, the card could mean cultural things, how you’ve been raised, or childhood trauma etc. holding you back and that you can’t move on from.

I have been intermittently practicing with a couple different Tarot Decks for about 2 years now. These explanations are very good and simple. The guide books that come with these decks don’t always really work for me since I’ve been used to using my own spiritual interpretation of them. Your deck is really beautiful. Great article. From the sound of some comments, people are really looking at tour definitions as WORD. A reminder to those individuals that although cards of the Major A are intended to represent well known quantities, they must, for nuance sake, be taken into context of the deck as a whole. Also, several times you referred to the Major A as 21 cards. There are 22. I am going to assume I am missing something significant about this. You seem to be well on your way to knowing the deck. Great article. My only complaint is that several times the major arcana is referred to as having 21 cards when it’s actually 22. 0 (the fool) is the 1st card and 21 (World) is the 22nd. Not a huge thing but it bugged me a bit. Overall, great job condensing the varied “book” interpretations into one place and in less than an hour.

If you notice in the four of swords there is someone on there knees listening to someone else sort of praying to them so i take the four of swords as putting your own thoughts or ideas up and taking some in from someone else and incorporating your own with them as well and thats why he still has one sword laying in bed looking like hes contimplating. What a great resource article! I had all of the meanings written down in my book, from a source on line that i did not cross reference. I got a Rider Waite deck and started comparing the descriptions i had. Some meanings were all over the place. But i know the book with the deck isnt always the easiest to diguest, so I used this article to go over what i had. I underlined the accurate parts i had, used white out to remove the stuff that was way off, and added to my meanings based on this article. (I dont really love that my book has white spots on off white pages now, but thats my fault for not checking other sources. And i guess it looks personalized). So, yesteday I did like a 6-7 card draw regarding a recent split I had with a very close friend of mine. The cards (That I got only earlier this week, this is my first deck ever, and this was one of my first readings ever) were so generous with the knowledge, explaining things I kinda already knew, but just needed confirmation with. Things like that we “broke up” (this relationship was full bestfriend material) due to deceit, disagreement and personal differences. But when I finally asked the question “What will be the future nature of this relationship” I picked a card I had been staring at for a long time, but only choosing to lift it up now, and I pulled the Lovers, Reversed. I’ve never felt such a powerful surge of certainty than what I felt when I looked at that card.
I’d say a good studying tip for the minor arcana is to learn the shared characteristics between the numbers (as in how the ace represents a beginning across all the suits) before reflecting on the individual differences of the suits so you only have to think 14 cards instead of 56. Not saying it’s a perfect method, but on a personal level I find the minor more difficult to internalize because I find there to be more nuance to them so getting the broader ideas out of the way helps me.

I’ve been reading Tarot over 30 years. I like your attitude towards tarot, your energy and vibe. I hope by now, 3 years after you’ve created this article that you understand why the other lady you watched a 2-hour article did her own interpretation and hopefully you’re using your own intuition to do the same. The book meanings are guideposts that have a “main theme” but the rest is up to your intuition, what’s going in you will determine how you interpret the cards. For example, The Lovers card – I noticed how you quickly went over that and if you’ve done background on it, as you’ve stated, you’d know that originally Arthur Waite (Rider- Waite-Smith) who is about as “original” as you’re going to get, described the woman as being the subconscious mind and totally aware of the presence of divinity or the angle while and the man being conscious mind was not aware at all but seemed to look to her for guidance. So I’d say maybe a choice between earthy advice to that of divine or imagination. Some people may interpret this as choice between temptation and virtue though as that implies the woman is “temptation” and the man is “virtue” and that can be a bit sexist. However, depending upon the reading itself and the question and context, that may be what applies. No card ever has the exact same meaning in a different context and applied to question or situation; if you do that you’re not intuiting with Tarot allowing it to open you up to inner wisdom but just trying to apply someone else’s definition and interpretation to in a rote reading.

It’s normal that some cards to have different meaning based on the reader. But this does not mean that they have static meaning different than the one intended by the deck creator. Thoth Tarot for example is a very hard deck to learn (for me at least) as a lot of the meanings (from astrology and numerology) were changed and this changes a lot of things during a reading. The one that I resonate the most with (until now at least) is the Druid Craft Tarot Deck. Thanks for the article!

I’ll watch it again, as you go over the same thing in different ways, ie. the Queen in each suit reperesents the same basic thing. That makes sense.
I watched the first 3:38 minutes of the article, right after “the magician” and something told me to stop right there. I just started tarot (literally) and so far I’ve studied “The Fool” and “The Magician” in depth – all the symbolism, colors, meanings, possible interpretations etc and I honestly felt that this article barely scratched the surface of what these two cards mean and what they bring us. I’m by no means saying you didn’t do a good job, I’m simply saying that for me, it feels like this article will be a great refresher after I do my study and research on all the major and minor arcana cards. Now, for the little I saw, I feel like this article is EXCELLENT for those who are seeking a more compiled and straight-forward explanation of the cards and that’s something not everybody has the ability to do so congrats for summarizing it so well and so clearly! The cards really are intuitive, but having your guide to help solidify what I was already picking up was really helpful.

Hermit: going into solitude, finding yourself, reevaluate something, self reflection, see things clearly. Queen of swords, being coldharted, very sharp, mind and wit analyzing things and organizing things. Abundance, prosperity, financially secure and humble very practical. Talents. Overcoming obstacles, being on the defensive, maintaining control and overcoming challenges and obstacles. Last steps that you need to take but still a little bit needs to be done, tired, at the point of reaching exhaustion. 5: winning at all costs, fighting and conflict, being sneaky about this. Judgement: time has come to make a decesion, moving forward with your goals, putting the past in the past. Desired transformation, evaluating yourself.
I loved this took in a lot of information even sat and looked over my cards as you was going over to see my cards meaning and was following with the book that came with my cards. All very similar means I truly feel I have a better understand of my cards and their meaning. It was easier to connect to my cards and find the meaning for them as you were going over it. What an awesome article. My mind never wandered. The information was to the point and the cards were great to look at. I loved that you’d tell us when you were sharing a piece of info that was your insight or interpretation of a card. And when you did share those insights, they were like aha moments for my brain. Thanks so very much. I went through each of my card in the Chris Ann ‘The light seers tarot’ (its my first deck) and it helped tremendously. Great article! It’s very interesting how broadly the meanings of each card can range, with a basic accepted meaning. Each deck writer adds slight nuance to each card, and it’s amazing to hear all the viewpoints. Sometimes one word of an explanation will stick out and make complete sense. I got my first deck 5 years ago, and I still use it to read for myself only, since it tends to give others my own pattern of cards I get often. (working on these things, yes. 😄) So I use a new deck to read for others, cleansing often and allowing them to handle and shuffle the cards first. Currently doing an in depth research project writing each down in my notebook with accepted and learned meanings. Anyway, thanks for this! Edit: I was going to also recommend that when you read, use your intiution first, record what your initial feelings are before focusing on the book.
I also don’t agree with needing to be gifted a deck. No one would have ever bought me a deck. I finally just bought myself two decks at 36 years old. I also shuffle until card(s) pop out. I call them jumpers since I don’t know what the technical name is. I go with my intuition then use the book since each artist had their own message when creating their deck.

I was gifted my first tarot deck at 16… it was my mother’s first tarot deck and she wanted to pass it on to me. My father opened the package, found it and promptly burned it in the wood burning stove. Needless to say he is reaping what he sowed from that. So I bought the first tarot deck I ever read with.
Random story of how I manifested my first deck of Tarot cards. A friend of mine had the EXACT DECK YOU’RE USING and I fell in love with it. I even told her that one day I will have it. When I moved shortly after that exchange I found myself nowhere near where I had intended to live and reconnected with someone who told me she had a tarot deck that she never used and asked me if I wanted it. I thought “sure, maybe it’s the deck I’m meant to have since I just stumbled across it” and she gave me THOSE EXACT CARDS! I’ve been happily using The Wild Unknown Tarot deck for about 6 months now. Seeing them in your article gave me the feeling that the Universe is telling me that I’m on the right path. Thank you for being part of that path.
I’m with you on reversals. When I started reading tarot, I read reversals. I eventually realized if I let my subconscious know I was not reading reversals, the card I needed with the correct information came up. There are 78 cards—plenty of different situs available. If you’re doing a reading, the placement of the card and the cards directly connected to it will let you know if the ‘reversed’ interpretation applies.
I’m so happy to hear that another witch doesn’t use spreads! I’ve always read with my intuition, whether it be that a few cards jump out of the deck, or I feel that it’s time to pull them. Sometimes I only put three cards, sometimes, I end up pulling out ten. My cards have never failed me, and I bought both of my decks. My first one is really aggressive to this day, while the newer one is like a gentle “hey babe, you uh, you got some shit you need to pay attention to before you fall over a cliff”. As someone who is trying to get into tarot but isn’t exactly a “devoted witch”, this was a very helpful article! Most of the articles i’ve seen so far talked mainly about certain rituals regarding the cards and the deep spirituality of actually using the cards, so i didn’t really benefit from those, because i mainly want to use tarots to explore “my own soul and mindset”, and discover things about myself and my actions, and depend more on myself based off what the cards try to tell me to improve on. This was a relaxed, simple way to read the cards, and i tried using a normal card deck and asked myself a couple of questions and i really benefited from it! Thank you for this helpful article!
The deck I have been wanting for a long time was gifted to me by a friend I randomly met and hit it off with 😭 she never connected with it and gifted it to me since she never used it. I don’t believe your first deck has to be gifted but I love that mine was gifted! It’s almost like the universe set it up to happen.

I put down my tarot deck for 25 years because I did my reading exactly like you do, and back then, there was no YouTube or ANY real information on the brand new internet about how to read Tarot… and frankly, the way that everyone said was “proper” or “correct” didn’t feel right and seemed to restrictive. So I stopped using my cards, even though I felt that my way worked very well! Part of me felt like I was a fraud since I wasn’t following the rules of tarot. Well, I kept my cards a s still have them to this day. I brought them out a few days ago and decided to buy a new deck as well. The Fountain. Instant connection. My friend and I got our first tarot decks when we were 12. Her mom was a professional reader. We went to the new age store and picked out what deck we wanted and then we gifted them to each other! I’ve received many decks as gifts, and many I bought myself. I also read without spreads most of the time, read the jumpers, or just pick off the top too!

Got my first tarot deck from my mom, she had bought it on a school trip in England but never got to use it, so when I started talking about wanting to learn tarot she pulled this 25 year old unused deck out of a box, it was one of the best gifts I’ve ever received! When u first started tarot did u try to memorize the cards and their meanings or do u just “makeup” a meaning that u are picking up from the card? I’m trying to get into tarot and I was going to try I guess u could say study the cards and try to memorize them but I’ve heard a lot of witches say u shouldn’t treat ur cards like they’re flash cards and I’m not sure why ? I’m just really curious
Everyone that I know in Ohio wraps their decks in random fabrics. A lot, including myself, use bandanas. It’s more or less to protect the cards during travel and give a nice surface to read on. I’m glad you mentioned the silk wrap thing. The person who taught me did use silk and discussed with me why. I just didn’t feel it necessary.

Can you help me? i have tried joining a coven, but find it very hard, so i believe i am called to do this on my own. Yet of course need some guidance for mor expierenced witches.

Love this! I’ve always bought my own decks, whether I was 15 getting my first one; or 30ish when getting back into tarot. I love them; they work just fine! I’ve started doing a card of the day this year; and I’ve enjoyed it. I don’t really like journaling unless it’s tarot journaling, and I always record my spreads. 🙂

heck yes, it’s super annoying whenever I’m having any conversation with someone on the internet and randomly someone appears screaming how FIRST DECK MUST BE GIFTED OR YOU’LL BE CURSED, AND OH THE MISFORTUNE >_> I’m glad there’s someone with larger audience saying it’s more of a ‘you do you’ instead of this or that is the only correct way.
Im very very new to this spiritual stuff, witchcraft etc. I went to a spiritual shop first time about month ago. I saw this tarot card deck there, i hoovered around it but did not buy it cos it felt too pricey. For some reason i couldnt stop thinking about it and finally, after a month i went to get that for myself (actually today). I felt like it was calling me. That one lonely tarotcard deck in that shelf. And this tiny shop is sadly closing down, so i was just in time to get it for me. Now, learning can start.
