President Donald Trump defended his decision to share an unfounded conspiracy theory on Twitter suggesting Bill and Hillary Clinton were involved in the death of financier Jeffrey Epstein. Trump’s responses spoke to a yearslong pattern of Trump directly espousing or leaning into conspiracy theories, often those that smear his political opponents or critics. Trump rejected the Clinton campaign’s accusations that his tweet was anti-Semitic by slamming “false attacks” and insisting the star represented a sheriff’s badge. Asked on CNN about the sexual post about Clinton and Harris, Trump senior adviser Jason Miller downplayed a discussion about the post as a “distraction”.
Conspiration theories sometimes started with legitimate questions and confusion and centered on alleged security. The top response on the most visited QAnon forum to one of Trump’s posts about the conspiracy theory read simply, “Wipe them out sir”. Others pleaded with Trump to “nuke them from orbit”. Misinformation and conspiracy theories were spreading online after an assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday. One of Trump’s major lies backed by conspiracy theories is that the 2020 election was stolen. The president downplayed sharing a tweet linking Clinton to Epstein’s death, arguing the focus must be on the investigation.
