The Visconti-Sforza Tarot deck, originally composed of 78 cards, has been expanded to contain 74, including 20 trumps, 15 face cards, and 39 pip cards. The deck now consists of 48 cards with only two trumps – the Emperor and the Wheel of Fortune. All face cards have a gilt background, while the pip cards have a silver one. Each suite comprises 14 cards consisting of King, Queen, Knight, Page, plus Pip cards numbered 10 to 1.
The Major Arcana is a collection of 22 trump Tarot cards that unveil the fundamental archetypes of human existence. A complete pack consisted of 728 cards, including 21 trump cards, one wild card (the Fool), and fifty-six cards divided into four fourteen-card suits (cups, staves, etc.). Tarot cards, then known as tarocchi, first appeared in Ferrara and Milan in northern Italy, with the Fool and 21 trumps (then called trionfi) being added to the standard Italian pack.
The Visconti Tarot is one example from many in the Cary Colelction of Playing Cards. The Tarot of Visconti Grand Trumps is a majors-only edition of the Visconti Tarot, featuring 22 large cards with black borders and a gold metallic treatment on the back.
For his wedding in 1441, he commissioned the Visconti di Modrone deck, which included at least 80 cards (16 trump cards and 6 court cards in each suit). The oldest Tarot deck, jewel of the Italian Renaissance, has a renewed packaging and extended booklet with gold foil impressions.
The Golden Visconti Tarot Grand Trumps are a beautiful reproduction deck of the oldest tarot in the world, covered in gorgeous gold foil. They look very much like a modern Italian suited deck.
