Vineshaper Mystic is a creature that can be the target of its own ability, which allows it to target itself. It can be triggered when the creature enters the battlefield and puts a +1/+1 counter on each of up to two target Merfolk you control. This ability is not a spell, so it won’t be able to attack or block. When Captured by Lagacs enters the battlefield, support 2 is activated.
When Vineshaper Mystic enters the battlefield, it can target itself and come into play as a 2/4 merfolk for 3 mana. However, it can die before the end of the turn, making it not quite comparable to a 2/4 with support 1.
The Mana Cost for Vineshaper Mystic is 1/3. The creature has never touched a loom, yet the tapestries she weaves are unique. When the creature enters the battlefield, it can put a +1/+1 counter on each of up to two target Merfolk you control.
Phyrexians can’t corrupt what they can’t get close enough. To use Vineshaper Mystic, you need at least one other merfolk. It can target itself and come into play as a 2/4 merfolk for 3 mana, but it can die before the end of the turn.
In summary, Vineshaper Mystic can be the target of its own ability, but it can also be targeted by other creatures. It is important to note that no permanent spell can have targets, and Vineshaper Mystic requires at least one other merfolk to be effective.

For curious nerds: I’ve ran an AVERAGE function on all these color grades for Ixalan — I was curious of which color would “prevale” in terms of this website’s grades. And I know this could be meaningless, but I still was very very curious, so 🙂 (I figured F = 0, D- = 1… A = 11.) The results are! №1 GREEN 5.073170732 №2 red 4.857142857 №3 white 4.558139535 №4 black 4.476190476 №5 blue, 4.023255814
I have some issues with a few ratings, but Old-Growth Dryads is the one I object to the most. You gave it a C, and I think it is an F. It’s highly unlikely a deck in Limited will be able to take advantage of a 3/3 for 1 well enough to offset the fact that they’re willingly casting a Time Walk on their opponent. And later on in the game, even though the extra land doesn’t matter that much anymore, the fact that it’s a 3/3 that advantages your opponent is also very bad.
Weird thought and it’s probably not viable but… What if you drafted 7 or 8 commune with dinosaurs, and played a 40 card deck. IN theory you could stack the bottom of your deck (hopefully get to it) but would there be enough ” room ” for other win condition cards? You wouldn’t need to play the 16 to 18 lands since you’d be stacking the deck plus getting lands out of commune.s…its probably a fools errand but it’s something to think about.
Green just seems way better than most other colors for limited. I may underestimate how fast pirates or vampires can be but srsly, those dinosaurs ask some pretty darn good questions when they hit the board and if you get a drover, one or two of those ramp enchantements and just play green – red big stuff you should be doing great… Dunno. I don’t think I will like this format too much. It just looks like they tried to make Dinosaurs AWESOME AND FLASHY and stuff like the 4/5 enrage draw a card or the 4/4 flash enrage get a +1/+1 counter or even the ramp spells just seem pushed
I think you might be overrating Explore by a degree, tishana’s wayfinder being exemplary. The problem is that the “card selection side” just makes them over costed I think. I think these cards needs build-around grades, like having +1 counters synergies or explore synergies. B- is pretty generous for Wayfinder even if payoffs. This is only slightly overrated though and I do like the mechanics. Otherwise I mostly agree with everything, kudos.
I’m an older/returning magic player who never had any particular experience in either draft/sealed getting ready for pre’release. How often can decks afford to go into 2-3 colors? If I run green as a base, is it fine to go for say….a green/red deck splashing a 3rd color for just 1-2 really strong cards that don’t cost double of their color?
Kenji I love your review but rating everything 2.5 doesnt help anyone. Giving Drover of the Mighty and every other green creature a 2.5 doesnt help people make choices when theyre drafting a color. I feel like you should really reflect on your rating system. That, or youre playing it way too save on your grades.
Old growth feels like it should have flash and be at 2 manna. This way you play it end step of opnent’s 2nd turn (or first turn if you went first) then letting yourself take first advantage of the ramp. But I suppose that is the downside of being a 1 mana 3/3. Could be slightly too strong with flash even at an extra manna CC, but still I feel that it would fix the card a lot–since you know it’s rare, and wer have a common that is almost the same as a mythic.
