Ontario is a prime location for magic mushrooms, with nine known species local to the region. These include the famous Psilocybe Silvatica, also known as liberty caps, and other types of shrooms. Foraging wild mushrooms in Ontario is restricted to private land, and there are laws on where to forage. The University of Guelph plant science researchers are preparing to begin exploring the potential therapeutic effects of psilocybin, a key active compound in so-called “magic mushrooms”.
Canada, known for its stunning natural landscapes and progressive policies, has recently been in the spotlight for decriminalization and regulatory measures. The production, sale, and possession of magic mushrooms are illegal in Canada, but there is increasing interest in their potential therapeutic uses. Foraged mushrooms can be found in farmers’ markets, grocery stores, and other locations.
Magic mushrooms, also known as shrooms or mushrooms, contain the chemicals psilocybin or psilocin, which cause hallucinations. Police are issuing warnings to northern Ontario residents after a bag of hallucinogenic drugs was found in a geocache in a provincial park. Psilocybin, or “magic mushroom”, stores are popping up across Canada despite the drug being illegal. The first ever documented recreational use of psilocybin mushrooms growing outside Mexico occurred in Vancouver in 1965.
As interest grows in the potential therapeutic effects of psilocybin, the University of Guelph plant science researchers are preparing to begin research. Ontario is emerging as a vibrant epicenter for the exploration and embrace of organic psilocybin magic mushrooms for psychedelic therapy.
