William Hanchett published “Why was Lincoln Murdered?” after nine years of research, which argued that Lincoln’s murder was orchestrated by his own Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton. The book explores the full story behind the Abraham Lincoln assassination conspiracy, from the initial plan to the other attacks that occurred on April 14, 1865. There are two views on who gave the order: Booth himself or Confederate President. One view is that the assassination resulted from a simple conspiracy of John Wilkes Booth and his close associates, while the other view suggests that it was part of a grand conspiracy of Confederate leaders in Richmond and Canada.
The Lincoln Assassination contains testimony gathered under the authority of the War Department after Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865. Otto Eisenschiml’s 1937 publication of “Why Was Lincoln Murdered?” gained momentum, but his theories have been largely discredited. Hanchett unravels these misconceptions and false ideas to present Lincoln’s murder as the political finale to the Civil War.
John Wilkes Booth, a famous Shakespearean actor and strong Confederate sympathizer, shot the President in the back of the head while Lincoln was attending the play Our American Cousin. He was later tracked down and killed in the barn of farmer Richard Garrett near Port Royal, Virginia, on April 26, 1865. In his 1983 book “The Lincoln Murder Conspiracies”, Hanchett revisits the three theories on who gave the order, including Booth himself or Confederate President.

Your overall view of the facts are pretty close, but I’ve studied Lincoln and his cabinet much deeper then you, for over 20 years. Everyone, including Seward knew who the big boss was. It was Lincoln. He had a shaky start to his presidency, but after the first year, or so, he was fully in command of everything.
What’s with the inaccurate swipe at Bush? He never pulled off suspending habeus corpus, and only for terrorists as it is at gitmo outside the US which the supreme court blocked. Linlcon, Grant both with the war and reconstruction did it in limited places, more modern, would be FDR who did it for all during WW2, not on a limited basis like before.
I never knew Grant was supposed to be there and conveniently canceled and left the state and thus obvious alibi, yet spurs me to theorize a hypothetical suspicion could it be possible Grant hired the man and had the scapegoat silenced before ability to snitch? He did become president right after Lincolns VP finished out the rest of the term..
