Texas A and M University-Corpus Christi has unveiled an updated version of its mascot, Izzy the Islander. The updated Izzy is a blue character with waves of green and blue hair, representing the “coastal lifestyle” of Corpus Christi. The university, which began in 1947 when Ward Island became the home of the University of Corpus Christi, has 312 students enrolled.
The mascot was previously depicted as a costumed man with a tiki mask headdress, grass skirt, and spear. However, in 2022, the mascot was redesigned to be a blue character with waves of green and blue hair. The former “Izzy” mascot was a costumed man with a tiki mask headdress, grass skirt, and spear.
Izzy the Islander has been wandering the campus of Texas A and M-Corpus Christi as the official mascot. Before that, the official mascot was “Tarpie”, the Tarpon, who was the A and M0CC’s mascot in the 1990s and remained the university’s official mascot until 2004. BuzzFeed ranked Izzy the Islander as the sixth weirdest college mascot, based on how nervous the student was.
The new mascot, Izzy the Islander, has been met with mixed reactions from fans and critics. Some have found Izzy the Islander to be a symbol of the university’s “coastal lifestyle”, while others have criticized him for being offensive and racist.
