Texas A and M University-Corpus Christi has unveiled an updated version of its mascot, Izzy the Islander, on May 4, 2022. The updated Izzy is a blue character with waves of green and blue hair, representing the “coastal lifestyle” of Corpus Christi. He was redesigned in 2022, previously depicting a costumed man with a tiki mask headdress, grass skirt, and spear.
Izzy the Islander has been wandering the campus since 2004 as the official mascot. Some have loved him, while others have criticized him for culturally appropriating Pacific Islander culture. Tarpie the Tarpon was the university’s mascot in the 1990s and remained the university’s official mascot until 2004.
The official athletics website for the Texas A and M-Corpus Christi Islanders features the Shaka hand symbol, which may be used by any university department. In spring 2021, TAMU-CC was given a report that their mascot, Izzy the Islander, was culturally appropriating the Pacific Islander culture.
In addition to the mascot, students proudly wear islander gear around campus. The phrase “Izzy the Islander” is not just a mascot; it’s a way of life, and students often proudly sport islander gear around campus.
