As an adult re-watching this, they literally glorified every single thing. I remember my mother bought a film about a dog “Because of Wynn Dixie”. She used my brothers DVD player. Brothers DVD was messed up after being dropped and thus would sometimes freeze. I forgot to tell her this. So the DVD player froze her movie at 0:18 mark. Mom comes out of the kitchen with her popcorn and starts freaking out “I DIDN’T STEAL IT! I BOUGHT IT! I HAVE THE RECEIPT! In 2006, Buma/Stemra comissioned a Dutch musician, Melchior Rietveldt, to write some music for an anti-piracy ad, contracted to be used for a single screening exclusively at a local film festival. Mr. Reitveldt wrote the music, it was played, he got paid. In 2007 Melchior discovered after perusal a Harry Potter DVD that his music in the anti-piracy ad was at the beginning. This article popped into my mind, and I decided to look it up to see if I could see it again. I remember seeing this when I would load in a dvd of the pink panther. As a kid, I never understood this, but enjoyed it. Overtime, I learned what it meant. Given these days, people usually get downloaded and have streaming platforms without the need of DVD’s, there are still some people that buy DVD’s, so this still applies. The old days of physically bootlegged movies were such a trip. I remember it was every friday with me and my mum taking a surreptitious trip down to the local chinese man and the back of the cosmetics store and he would tell us which copies were high quality “dvd copy” dowloads and which were shitty “cinema copies” which meant he or someone else had gone to the cinema and filmed the screen on his camera. Nowadays you can stream these things freely, but I do miss the clandestine vibes of mid to late 2000s piracy.
As a non-native English speaker i didn’t understand what this ad was about when i was a kid so i always just assumed it was a trailer of a cool action crime movie. I thought the computer scenes were about some criminal hacker and the guy stealing the car and TV was a bad ass thief. So ironically this ad just made me idolize crime stuff as a kid xD.
Friendly reminder: The only reason most of us every downloaded stuff was because the MARKET didn’t give US the consumer what we wanted. We wanted the ability to get ONE song that we really liked, or to discover NEW music on the cheap. Instead the market wanted to force us to buy CDs and albums of mostly music we didn’t want. We wanted movie and music for CHEAP, ON DEMAND, and they were unwilling to give that to us so we shrugged and hit the download button. Today the market has adjusted to what the consumer said it wanted all along. The Next time corporations want to pretend the “FrEe MaRkEt” is a thing, remember it isn’t. They’ve always controlled it and forced it to be a certain way. We, the consumers, fought back and changed it to what WE wanted.
The definition for stealing is “take (another person’s property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it.” Pirating a film, you are not taking away the film from anyone, you are downloading a COPY of the ORIGINAL. Same applies to Softwares. Therefor Pirating is not stealing.
I remember this ad eventually led me to spending hours and hours trying to crack a pirated GTA 4 copy at like 12 years old, because I found out that you can just download games for free just like that. Crazy part is that I actually ended up getting it working even though I didn’t know much about computers then (and GTA 4 being notoriously difficult to crack on PC at the time).
When I was a child with cheap parents who refused to get internet service, I saw this ad on a DVD that our teacher was playing, as part of a book report we are doing. I found about piracy, and wanted to do it. This maybe also one of the reasons my parents got internet service to begin with. That, and that needing internet for homework.
