The term “conspiracy theory” and “conspiracy theorist” were created by the Central Intelligence Agency following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to discredit the official version of the event. However, there is no credible evidence that the CIA coined the term. The term was used in a book review in 1956, seven years before JFK’s assassination.
The term “conspiracy theorist” has been used since at least 1956, with claims such as a Satanist pedophile ring run by political elites and American voting machines rigged by Hugo Chavez. The term has been popularized since the 1950s by philosopher Sir Karl Popper, who popularised the expression. Conspiracy theories attempt to explain harmful or tragic events as the result of the actions of a small powerful group, often political.
The term proliferates in newspapers from the 1870s onward, particularly after the assassination of President Garfield in July 1881. Conspiracy theories often incorporate elements from pseudoscience, such as scientific terms or data, research, sources, and more.
Research on conspiracy theories has proliferated since 2016, partly due to the US election of President Trump and the COVID-19 pandemic. The term “conspiracy theory” emerged much more recently than its original meaning, and its use has evolved over time.
