Did Scandinavians Wear Amulets Made Of Gungnir?

Viking warriors used to wear Thor’s Hammer as an amulet during battle to provide protection, a tradition that continued even after many Vikings had passed. In Norse mythology, Thor’s Hammer Mjöllnir symbolized immense power and served as a protective amulet for Viking warriors. A Viking Age mold discovered in Denmark could forge both cross and hammer pendants. When Scandinavians were resisting the pressures of the new religion of Christianity, smiths created Mjolnir amulets alongside crosses and other amulets. Some historians believe the amulet was worn as a blessing for battle or a swipe at the spreading faith of Christianity.

A 1,000-year-old amulet of Thor’s Hammer discovered in Sweden shows the lasting popularity of the ancient Norse deity. Gungnir jewelry was not worn nearly as much in the Viking Age, but spears and staffs had other ornamental and ritual uses possibly to imitate one of the most important weapons in Norse Mythology. Norse males would also wear them to show off their loyalty to Odin and his warriors.

Norse necklaces were symbolic of unwavering loyalty between an Odin and his warriors, and Norse males would also wear them to show off their skills. More than 250 necklaces, pendants, and amulets, all designed with Norse symbols and Viking style, many inspired by genuine historic prices worn by the Vikings. The Gungnir Viking Necklace is a masterfully crafted homage to Odin’s mighty spear, allowing people to immerse themselves in the saga of Norse mythology.

  • Good morning from Texas, USA First let me say I love your website. After my husband past, I was in a rather fragile state emotionally. I had an experience where I believe I crossed over and visited with my husband, I was told it was a heart attack. My daughter knowing how much I love the beliefs of the Scandinavian people of old, gave me a Freya statue and Thor hammer necklace. Once I put that on things began to change dramatically for the better. My zest for life grew, boldness insued, I learned to ride a harley, met some great friends. Now I travel the states riding a motorcycle enjoying life and friends. Given my age some might call it crazy, I call it a second life. Thanks for sharing your story.

  • My father in law, and chieftain gifted my mjolnir when he determined that I deserved it. And I haven’t taken it off in about 6 years, except to change the leather/chain. When I put it around my neck, it felt both physically and emotionally heavy. Your story is very inspiring, I’m so glad the gods guided you through that tough time. Hail to you man. And hail to the gods.

  • I mentioned this in a comment earlier, I guess I have a sort of “cringe” mjolnir that’s Celtic by design. I’m Scandinavian and can’t really afford an expensive one at the moment so it’s all I could do. It’s not the design or price, it’s how you wear it and whether it’s meaningful or not to pagan culture.

  • I have been wearing my Mjolnir for 10 years now, it was handmade by a friend who made cast sterling silver jewelry. It is heavy, but I love it. I don’t feel the same if I take it off. I definitely think it gives me energy and a feeling of protection. It is my most worn talisman next to my Freyja pendant.

  • I just purchased my pendant from your store and I absolutely adore it. It was a gift for myself for my 49th birthday and I to am wearing it to grow strong and brighten my life force after health issues and pain and suffering in my body. I will be stronger and make it to 50. Thank you for this article and the excellent source of my beloved pendant. I welcome the life force of Thor into my heart and I am ready to break free of this stagnant energy that is holding me back.

  • In almost all (pre/proto-) historic cultures amulets were worn to protect throat and chest for the obvious reason: it’s our most vulnerable and vital zone together with our head. That’s why Roman coins were used as pendants in the late Germanic Iron Age: they had the face of a ‘god’ (Caesar) on it after all and were round like later early medieval roundshields. That’s probably why early coins and coin pendants (bracteates) were known as ‘skildlings’ by the West Germanic tribes (literally ‘little shields’, hence the names ‘Schilling’ for pennies in Germany, shilling in Britain and schelling coins in the Netherlands). Amulets protect and increase your strength. I carved my Mjölnir pendant from a piece of (old) spermwhale tooth about ten years ago for those reasons. Like Þór, I am a Guardian, a father and a keeper of peace with responsibility for my family. I dedicated my pendant with the proper gáldrs to him and the lives I want to protect. The runes are cognate with the formula I used. My Mjölnir reminds me every day who I am, where I come from and what my duties are. I asked Þór’s blessing and aid for this task. The pendant is also a witness to this bond. That’s why it never comes off. It’s part of me now and shows who I am. That said: glad you came out of Covid man, people still underestimate this disease.

  • I bought a chain that I liked online that has Thor’s goats that hold the ring but I got a silver Thor’s hammer from Grimfrost. It depicts Jormungandr on it, which is a very important symbol to me. I also have a tattoo of the battle between Thor and the world serpent. It reminds me that all things have an end, but there is also a rebirth. Ragnarok still remains one of the most important stories for me.

  • Glad you’re in better shape and spirits. I’ve been in a similar boat the last year, a long recovery from a certain illness followed up by a mishap with right rotator cuff that’s finally manageable. Not to mention the mentality of it all, so definitely feel you. It is quite wearing… on a positive note, you carried yourself quite well as it wasn’t noticeable.

  • Commenting on a 2 years old article seems silly but I just discovered your website and am going through your library. As far as Mjolnir goes I have one made from silver based on a Danish archaeological find and I swear by its magic. I’m struggling with anxiety, had few panic attacks and fovias that hindered my enjoyment of life. Since I’ve started wearing mjolnir exclusively and invoking it’s power my mental health greatly improved.

  • I love your interpretation, and it makes a lot of sense to me! Very happy that you’re feeling better. I have owned and worn the Rømersdal mjölnir (in 925 grade silver) for a few years now, and I do feel an energetic shift when I wear it for a few consecutive days; I tend to wear it more often when I need to feel more grounded or focussed.

  • I see the wearing of Mjolnir as reminder of Norse beliefs, culture, and history. It could be compared to the Jewish Yamaka cap which is worn as a daily reminder of their faith. I have a silver Mjolnir from your shop and in wearing it I find myself thinking of all things Norse and I begin to crave for more information to the point where I watch more of your articles or read in one of your suggested books. It is a good thing and am glad I wear it.

  • I sadly don’t have a Mjolnir pendant since the belief is not so much followed in the country I live in, however I do have a tattoo on my right leg that I got a couple of years ago, at the time I had it done it was with intention aligning with the symbolism you spoke of here and imo it helped me greatly with my health problems, recently I too had a serious heart event and the doctors happened to operate from that right leg that Mjolnir is on, it’s been a very rough time since but this article just reminded me of my own beliefs and the meaning of the tattoo and why I had it done in the first place, thank you for this profound gift and for all the hard work you do with all of your articles blessings upon you!

  • in the scandinavian folklore there is a consistent belief that wearing a cross or saying the carpenter’s name scares off the trolls, in post-christian folklore survived the belief that trolls were afraid of lightning. Trolls were not just man-eating and kidnappers in the folklore but also were held responsible for some deseases and other kinds of mischief. Being Thor believed to be the greatest troll-hunter in heathen times, wouldnt it be possible that in post-christian folklore Thor’s role was stolen by the crhistians to be atributed to the carpenter (i hate saying his name)? wouldn’t it be possible that the mjöllnir amulet was worn as a warding against trolls? by this I mean as a warding against ill weather caused by trolls, deseases caused by trolls and trolls manifesting physically to eat you or kidnap you

  • I have had very similar experiences since i have been wearing my mjolnir, i have also noticed much more discipline and mental fortitude. I didnt realize it until you shared your story and it got me thinking… i love how sympathetic magic affects our subconscious in such a subtle way thats we oftentimes are not aware anything is happening at all, which is exactly the point.

  • I absolutely LOATHE 99.999% of what passes for “Viking” jewelry online. They put ” Ægishjálmur” and “Vegvisir” of everything. They put Odin’s Ravens on Thor’s hammer. They pick random Runes and just slap them on something and call it “Viking”. I could go on, but you know what I am saying. A long time ago I started seeking out real craftsmen for my jewelry. For instance, my hammer is a reproduction of a find from Denmark by an amazing craftsman in England who does it with the Lost Wax method like in the old times. I also have other stuff from him. My “weapons” I got the same way. I have 2 amazing Axes from Ukraine, a Seax from the Czech Republic and my Sword is from Sweden. ALL hand made by people who are either Pagan themselves or are students of history. I am not laying this all out to say “hey, look at me. I got all this stuff”. I am saying it because i feel we must start promoting honest craftsmen who’s heart are in the work. Most of that stuff to be found online sends out the wrong message. It’s pathetic and it waters down the seriousness of the public face of our belief structure. I really can’t wait for the Viking craze to blow over and the rest of us can get back to being actual Pagans and living life as it makes sense to us under they eyes of the Gods and our ancestors, without all the woke crap and corporate exploitation.

  • Liked it so much I had to watch it twice. I know what you mean about the effects of wearing it. My Thor’s hammer is the first thing I ever got when I started learning/practicing Norse paganism. But I also stopped wearing for a while to, and that was a shitty time. What was affected the most was my mental health, in the year and a half that I had stopped wearing it, I had been admitted in the mental hospital, not once, but twice. When I got out the second time, I decided to pick up were I left off and start studying again, and also wearing mjolnir again. Ever since then, everything’s changed, and gladly for the better. My mental and physical health are great now. Plus perusal this article maded me love my pendant even more. Understanding the significance and meaning of it, I love that my mjolnir isn’t a Chinese cringe one, or even a beautifully crafted silver or gold one. Mine was hand forged in iron from a blacksmith in Texas. And instead of getting a nice chain or a leather cord, I got a small piece of steel chain from home Depot. I figured the symbolism of an iron Thor’s hammer on a steel chain would be… Empowering. I was right. I will never take this off again. Ever.

  • Now I know I am not crazy hahaha I felt the power of mjölnir and the subsequent lack of energy when not wearing it but I assumed it was the placebo effect. Especially since I had made it myself. It might not be overtly fancy but I made it in honour of our Old faith so I think at least to me and the forebears that makes it special. Thanks for the great article man as always you speak with pertinence and your words carry weight

  • Glad you’re feeling better. In Afghanistan, I carried gemstones (carnelian, tiger’s eye, rose quartz) in the small pouch behind my kevlar body armour plate to help me be courageous, an effective leader and to carry the love and protection of my wife and family. I believe they helped me. Reality and activity follows thought and feelings, so I like to think I manifested courage, fortitude and good fortune. I believe the same principle applies to the wearing of Mjolnir pendants.

  • I got mjölnir as my first tattoo, back in early 2020, and since then I feel incredibly confident and strong when I look at it. Can’t say that it has been something that changed my life but every now and then I look at it and feel an energy going through my body that will help me get through my obstacles. Having faith in yourself is what matters, never forget that!

  • I made mine from brass and I have also been going through some tough times and I can remember the other day reaching for it on my chest and it not being there and a feeling of “ahhhh no wonder I feel like shit” lol so yes I’m with you on this. I also recommend making your own if you have the ability to do so

  • That’s a beautiful interpretation of the meaning. Thanks for sharing. As a jewelry maker myself, I totally believe that necklaces can be like spells. When we put them on with intention, they work every time we notice them with shifting our thinking towards our intentions, and that’s the beginning of healing, and many other kinds of personal development too. Very powerful.

  • This was my personal theory only, so far, about Mjolnir being a cognate of an old Croatian word for grinding. Northern Croatian dialect has it almost word for word, with identical meaning. Hence my idea of a possible explanation. Seeing you translate it in old norse having the same meaning is just amazing. Etymology in Croatian being Mljeti = To grind (Infinitive) Mlinar – The person/thing that grinds (masculine) Melnar – Same thing in Kajkavian dialect We have much more in common historically than modern history would let Us assume. 😉

  • Great that You store the ones replaced from our actual findings in the nordic countries. I wear one that are a replica from a Mjölnir found on Gotland. Yours, that You show is very much similar to the ones found around Uppsala/Mälardalen. Very nice and powerful, it is definitely like You say, it feel great to wear a Mjölnir 💪. I see it as a symbol of progress as well, the hammer get things done, as symbol for human creation. I like your way of symbolic value as well. I will look into your shop 🙌

  • You know of them mom always told me it doesn’t matter about the jewelry the crosses what matters the most is the beating of your heart listen to the rhythm that it gives Just like thunder it gives off a rhythm just like lightning it gives up a rhythm just like birds they give off a rhythm the life force of nature and galaxy It doesn’t matter what everybody else believes it matters to you what you believe

  • Holy shit, I have some overlap with your story. I also had COVID, was bad enough that was hospitalized with pneumonia, was almost put on the ventilator, and had heart issues for several months afterward. I had medical bills that were sent to collections and eventually got them paid off a year later. I’m a military veteran in my fifties, but felt for a long time afterward like I’d aged 20 years. My family’s background is protestant, but as a kid I read about paganism, and in those days felt a personal draw toward animism, though I didn’t know the term then. This year I began to research paganism once again, buying some books and crystals and whatever else I could find. It did reawaken something positive in me and I feel it’s put me on a healthier path. I will look for your shop online.

  • This article inspired me to wear my hammer again. It’s a replica of hammer found on Iceland, handmade of silver. Made in Sweden. Got it back in 1993, but haven’t used it for 20 years now. Also I know healing energies are very much a real thing. I have been healed many times, by a friend of mine, and I feel the energies very strong in my body. I can see the colours and “shape” of them. Like yellow flames raging through my body, purifying my body and soul. And the healing effect is undeniable. Thank you for this article.

  • Oh wow. Love ur “testimonial” lol. Jokes aside, it’s a beautiful thing to hear someone get back in touch with what they know is right and real. I’m honestly starting to believe that psychosomatic outcomes are or can be used by certain powers at certain times to initiate healing in those that believe, and psychosomatic is just a scientific term used to describe this phenomenon in a more secular way. All the best to u and urs, friend.

  • I can definitely feel the difference when I forget to wear mine. My performance in the gym is not as good, I get tired easily. But when I have it on, I feel, stronger, faster, I don’t get tired as easy. Same with my oath ring, if I don’t wear them I feel naked, weak, and different. It’s a different aura when I forget them. Uncomfortable if you will.

  • Yo! I have one of those cringe pagan mjolnirs! 😂 I bought it early into my path. And I actually still use it daily. And yes it is a form and a great form of sympathetic magic. Funny enough that purchase led me to a lot of YouTube websites. Including this one. And I appreciate your knowledge that you put forth. Being an American of Germanic heritage I was forced into the Christian belief as a child. Even went to a Baptist School. It never felt like home to me. And this does. I just got on your store for the first time a minute ago and now I feel like a kid in a candy shop. I’ve been wanting a more proper Mjolnir for quite some time. And now you done gave me like five of them that I gots to pick through. SMH damnit man. LoL! Anyways keep it coming. I’m enjoying the Facebook page also. Really glad you changed the name. But y’all go easy on us American folk. We’ve been trapped thousands of miles away from home and have had cultures and religions shoved on us for years. We’re just trying to learn.

  • Yes I have a Mjolnir i have not worn it for a very long time can’t say if it helped with my health as I was fine all the years that I worn it, but now I have health problems maybe its time I put it back on. I have been thinking so much over the last few months to make a wooden one I know it might sound strange but when I make things put time and energy into them I feel they have something special about them.

  • Mine is pure silver, made by a friend at the behest of a friend. I utilize it as a focus and a focal point when I need to concentrate. It’s heavy, I hold it, I feel it, and yes… I feel my heart in it. So I can understand it might help were I to have issues with my life drum. It’s a hell of a hammer. Proper bass kick.

  • I have 2 mjolnir that I switch in-between. One I got on a wolf chain from Sweden and the other I got made from Utah. All of which both mjolnir and chain are 925 sterling silver. I notice that when I’m not wear my mjonir that my energy is low and things in my life begin to spiral out of control. I’ve had many low points where I thought of dying. I feel my spiritual belief is what keeps me going. I always find a way to overcome any obstacles that life has thrown at me. I bury emotion and push forward. I keep my problems quiet because I know my family worries about me. I enjoy your website very much. It helps me out a lot and seeing your journey makes me happy about my own personal journey. Keep it up man.

  • I’m glad to.hear your story. I myself had a real rough recovery – not meat as bad as yours from the sound of it – but I took up hiking. It’s not the running that I loved to drive, but I’ve seen and connected more with nature on the trails. Some beautiful trails that I never knew about that were actually local.

  • So glad to hear you’re feeling much better now. Sympathetic magic can be a powerful thing. I’ve used it myself many times, but even I forget on occasion and when I do forget, life just doesn’t go as well. That being said, I have found this article to be much needed by me right now so thank you for this.

  • damn your story about your health issue with C-19 i was shocked because i also got that Shit. But i kept wearing my Mjölnir necklance. im not going to lie to you but it did actualy helped me alot to get it through fast from that virus. Thankfuly i was not hospitalizied (sorry for my spelling english is not my native language) but i recovered from that virus in 5 days and no post C-19 symptomes were accured. So what you said in your article when you shared your experiance i can confirm that you are not alone with that. and take my word 1000% true. And for the record i didnt even got any prescripted drugs to battle with this virus. I only increased the Vitamin C and D a czink takings while i was sick. oh and your webshop needs a refill some of the Mjölnir pendants are sold out 🙂

  • I have a tattoo of Mjölnir and a silver Mjölnir pendant from Grimfrost. Last year i was lucky to find a 22 karat gold earring outside a cemetery. I’ve also notice that when ever I wear my Mjölnir pendant when we have thunderstorms in the UK is that I never get struck by lightning even though I wear gold and silver jewellery.

  • I have a heart condition as well. My valves have calcified and I had open heart surgery in 2017 to repair one of them. I am terrified of catching the vid so I wear my pentagram for protection. But I love the direct connection between the mjolnir and the heart. I am an Appalachia Pagan but just learning Norse beliefs. Thank you for this! Much appreciated.

  • I’m glad your on the mend. Yes I do, I agree with you the amulet does help & heal. Cardiomyopathy is serious trust in what your body tells you; Hawthorn tea will help you.. I have several autoimmune disorders & I know it gives me added immunity to do what I need to do. I have heart issues too I’m pretty darn sure there is a hereditary factor. Physically I think we’re built for power & strength not longevity lol unless we eat herring all day! For me too scribing the runes on self with scents builds a shield as well. Thank you for sharing !

  • I found myself with renewed confidence after wearing my wooden Mjonir daily (it was hand carved in Bulgaria.) wanna get one of the ones on your shop and try those out. Though I’m somewhat allergic to metal anything metal seems to cause irritation on my skin. Which is why I have only worn a wooden one lately. Though still wanna get that silver one. Try it out, and if I don’t wear it at least I’ll have something more authethic. Now back to my personal experience I felt like I had a renewed sense of creativity, and desire to get strong got back into fitness shortly after. That very well could be placebo I guess. Though I will say there was improvement, beyond the gym I got back into writing, and researching and learning. Greatly improved my mood and behavior I’d say. I haven’t worn mjonir as often the past few days (still daily but I’ve taken it off for a good portion of the day most days, but this article inspired me to grab my mjonir and put it on yet again)

  • We see and feel and think the world in our minds and ourselves within it. We are figments of our own imagination, our egos and ids, but that does not mean we are not real. I mean this literally. I’m not saying that reality is subject to belief and thought, but our perception and indeed existence is. This is what gives us the why for us to determine the how. It isn’t a magic trick, it’s the consciousness of life.

  • I loved this one and I just ordered one of your hammers! I can’t wait to get it. I love that it comes from Norway and the history of it and the fact that it works for you. I get a lot out of your website I learn a lot about my own heritage from Norway. Since my grandfather came to United States as a child a lot of the back history of Norse history was not really discussed, except about the ship industry which is what my great grandfather did. He was involved in some of the exploration ships back in the 1800s including the Gjoa. Interesting stuff there. Eventually they got tired of Norway, they were living up Tromso, arctic circle. Very cold…then they came to the United States first to Alaska and then to California. I’m now in Wisconsin and there’s a lot of Scandinavian history especially in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota as you know.

  • I had gotten that same illness twice. Each time I refused to get those chemicals injected into my body. Yes it was rough and I felt like I was road kill. My sense of taste was off set(if l ate a dill pickle, it tasted like metal flakes. I was wearing my Thor’s hammer the entire time. I’m still wearing it every day.

  • I have 2 Mjolnir pendants and chains that I bought from Grimfrost. They are only stainless steel because that’s what I could afford, but I absolutely treasure them and they are so precious to me. I have one that has a longer chain that I like to wear outside for special events. Many people have made comments about it asking what it is. I get to tell them that it’s a pendant that represents my spiritual beliefs. The other one I wear at home and i never take it off, even when I go to sleep. My Mjolnir pendants are quite decorative, but I don’t mind. I feel that it’s what they spiritually mean to me is what matters the most…and that’s my connection to the Old Gods and my spiritual beliefs. I believe it make’s a huge difference in my life. I just wish that our heathen spirituality survived and that christianity didn’t take over. I would love to know so much more.

  • I have a few, some I made. I cut one from amazonite and am working on one made of Baltic amber. I feel empowered, am never sick and always feel as I have direction and know the path I should take. Others I have are the real thing purchased along time ago, I keep one of them at my bedside for protection.

  • My son and I both wear a mjolnir. It has nothing to do with any religious reasons and I actually wear a very small silver one that’s based off a find in Sweden. Its just a goofy heritage thing for me and my son just wears a cheap little one since he’s 9 years old and pretty much just wearing it to be like his dad
