Do Conspiracy Theorists Lean Left Or Right?

A new INSIDER poll reveals that Republicans and Democrats differ in their belief in unproven conspiracy theories, such as Bigfoot and chemtrails. These liberal conspiracy theories about Trump and Corbyn are simplistic and fallacious because they often ignore wider economic and political contexts. A study by University of Chicago Political Science Professor Eric Oliver found that lower-trust conservatives and liberals are both more likely to endorse ideologically congenial conspiracy theories (CTs) that make the other side look bad.

A national survey of 2021 U.S. adults was used to analyze the extent to which conspiratorial thinking and partisan reasoning inspire beliefs in election-related conspiracy theories. The study found a strong connection between social conservatism rather than economic conservatism and conspiracy mentality. There is a debate in political science about whether conservatives are more prone to conspiracy theories than liberals, but the evidence for this is strong.

Liberal commentators frequently condemn conspiracy theories that threaten public safety. The US mainstream media exploded in 2016 when an attack on the birth certificate of Barack Obama led to a surge in conspiracy theories. This study breaks from much previous research and attempts to explain conspiratorial beliefs with traditional theories of opinion formation.

Over 55 of Americans believe in at least one conspiracy theory about the Iraq War, 9/11, Barack Obama’s birthplace, the 2008 financial crisis, and “chemtrails”. Ideological conservatives who frequently discuss politics showed higher association with a conservative conspiracy theory than conservatives who do not. In this scenario, right-wing extremist groups played a major role in spreading hatred towards Jews, Muslims, anti-elite, racist, and anti-racist conspiracy theories.

  • Maybe one deeper problem is that a lot of these conspiracies are very believable… One problem with a lot of media outlets (& not just the mainstream ones) often extrapolate to the sensationalized version of things very fast & are more interested in being the first to break a story than being the most accurate…

  • Yes but at the same time, if you know that the public will only react to exaggerated claims, & if you happen to also really care about stopping the less click-baity wrongdoings of a person or govt agency, then you’d be willing use those exaggerated claims in order to turn the public against said agency, in order to stop those other wrongdoings (like getting de joy out of the usps or putting more scrutiny on what ICE is doing).

  • Cognitive dissonance is a big thing these days. Believing The narrative of the mainstream media is a huge factor in what people’s thoughts are. Right or left ignorance is king. Truth can be found by knowing your enemy too. People are too one sided (mostly on the left) with partisan ideology. You can’t even call yourself a moderate without some people giving you crap. I’m Non- partisan and therefore your common American. Mexican-American too so I can pull my race card. There are also weird people who believe the earth is flat….and the annunaki. To say that’s the “right” and not just ignorant or gullible is crazy to me. Believing Kyle rittenhouse is not innocent is a conspiracy theory. Russia and Ukraine gate = Huge conspiracies. Again, the left is completely pushed by mainstream and huge tech. I appreciate your articles but you will always be falling off the ledge left to me ! Which is ok !

  • Jen is so lazy that she’ll talk about a faceless Tweet opposing what was going on at the Postal Service. The idea that this is supposed to be useful in someway is embarrassing. For someone that thinks they’re exposing Rachel Maddow, she’s exposing herself Rachel at least ask the questions, where jen doesn’t. She also uses a strawman tactic with the photos. Propaganda at best here
