Do Dogs Ingest Magic Mushrooms?

“Magic” mushrooms (Psilobyce sp) contain psilocybin and psilocin, which are structurally related to LSD and act on serotonin receptors. They can cause signs in dogs like vocalization and mydriasis. Toxic mushrooms can pose a serious threat to dogs, causing symptoms from mild gastrointestinal upset to severe organ damage. Oils, butter, seasoning, and ingredients like garlic and onions can be harmful to dogs. Even if the mushroom is served plain, it is generally safer to avoid feeding them.

Mushrooms are toxic to dogs and can lead to serious health complications. The severity of symptoms depends on the amount ingested; larger doses can cause severe reactions, including tremors or death. Dogs are sickened and killed each year after eating toxic mushrooms. Some species of mushrooms are edible and safe for dogs, but some are toxic to dogs. There are three types of neurotoxic mushrooms: isoxazoles, hydrazines, and psilocybin (“magic”) mushrooms. All three cause signs of toxicity quite rapidly.

The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center reports that pet exposures to hallucinogenic mushrooms do occur, causing toxicities that can progress from severe to deadly in a matter of hours.
