Do Rituals Require Tangible Components?

Casting as a ritual takes 10 minutes longer than normal casting and requires maintaining concentration. If concentration is disrupted, the spell fails. Ritual casting doesn’t modify the components used in normal casting, but it does require other components. A character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus instead of the material components specified for a spell. The process of copying the spell into your ritual books takes 2 hours per level and costs 50 gp per level.

Rituals were introduced in 4e D and D as a way to expand out-of-combat uses for magic without requiring the use of a spell slot. A spell’s components are the physical requirements you must meet to cast it. Each spell’s description indicates whether it requires verbal (V), somatic (S), or material (M) components. A warlock cannot ritual cast, but a wizard can. The second restriction is also part of normal rules for spellcasting. They must have the material components for a spell.

Ritual casting allows players to cast spells as rituals instead of using spell slots. However, not all spells can be rituals, and not everyone who can cast spells can cast rituals. A character needs to have the Ritual Caster feature, which most full casters will have as part of their spells.

Ritual components can be purchased for an Arcana ritual and used for any Arcana ritual, provided they have enough of the component. These items allow you to cast any spell that requires a material component as long as the components do not have a listed gold cost.
