Do Spells Expire Upon The Death Of The Caster?

Spells do not end when the caster dies or goes unconscious, as they are not tied to the caster’s life force. They last for their normal duration until the magic is intentionally dispelled. Only sustained spells can be lost this way, not as a direct interaction with consciousness.

Exceptions to this rule include spells with a “concentration” duration, which ends when the spell ends, regardless of when the caster dies. Long duration spells can only be ended by being dispelled or destroyed. After casting a concentration spell, the spell does not end immediately, and durations are not dependent on the caster’s continued existence.

There is no current rule that spell effects end when a caster is unconscious or dies unless they are specifically concentration spells. Indirectly, ending the Geas spell removes the Charmed condition that it caused since the target creature of the spell is Charmed “for the duration”.

If a spell requires concentration, it ends when the caster dies. Otherwise, the spell will last the whole duration. If it doesn’t require concentration, it ends at the end of its duration.

Spells that require concentration end when the caster dies, and a spell must specify that it ends when the caster dies for this to be the case. The death of the caster doesn’t end the spell, and most spells on D and D 3.5 have a set duration and usually last their full duration regardless of the spellcaster’s well-being.

In conclusion, spells do not end when the caster dies or goes unconscious, but they do end when the magic is intentionally dispelled or the caster loses their magic or dies. Damage is permanent when a creature dies, and the series never discusses any details about this.

  • Thanks Dave, good answer for a good question! I’ve got a question, which could be useful for rule reminder. What about Flying Mounts or Companions? Are they available? If yes, how to get one (instead of buying)? Can I tame a Gryphon or a Dragon and use it as a Mount or Companion? Thanks in advance! Cheers!

  • Could you make a article on counterspelling? I know it’s an extension of your counteracting article but I feel like all the edge cases (specific spells counteracting other spells, dispel magic, ongoing effects vs instantaneous effects, the various feats, prepared vs spontaneous casters, etc.) could make for an interesting article. I probably spent hours reading and thinking about counterspelling and I’m not even sure we are doing it right.
