I have known Haitians ate cats since I was a small child, I remember my father telling me decades ago. He told me a story about when he was a child a family of Haitians moved in down the street from him. Within just a few months of them moving in all Stray cats in the neighborhood had disappeared, along with most of the squirrels and small birds. This is common knowledge to most southerners.
This puts into perspective how divided we are as a country. Residents of Springfield and anyone who knows about anything about the state of Haiti know these aren’t rumors. First thing Ihad to give up in my 70’s to stay alive is our life insurance so I could qualify for MEDICAID. My hubby and I each worked hard for 40 years, in schools as teachers. I think you missed the point giving advice to that single lady. When conservative talk about single women they often talk about how sad it is that our culture doesn’t prioritize marriage and these women who want to get married can’t. And you’ll talk about how women are happier when they’re raising children and married rather than being in the work force. All of which is true. But you’re not giving her any hope for fulfillment in life other than just hope that you get married eventually. I had neighbors that would hunt/eat squirrels in the park. They seemed pretty well off, but just liked grilled squirrel. I see no reason if people are from somewhere cats dogs were on the menu they wouldn’t still be on the menu when they want a taste of momma’s home cooking. I’m an Indian-American citizen, who, in his life, has voted Republican about 80% of the time, and independent about 20% of the time. Never once Democrat. To me animals are animals. People eat all kinds of animals. So if she sees this — Hi, caller. I’m childless not by choice, married, not a cat lady but a dog lady and I’ll tell you this: I feel for you. I can imagine it’s very hard and the pressure from the insensitive comments of friends and family can really become a burden. The sense of social isolation and disconnect is real. Do “regular” people get that? Hell, no. They’re clueless and accidentally callous because they’re clueless. But to Vance’s comment: first, my understanding is Vance made that comment about a decade ago so I’m not sure it reflects his current view on things. Second, even if it does, ultimately, the decision here can’t be based on our personal feelings. There’s a bigger picture here. Our country is at stake and we can’t allow it to be about how this or that candidate’s random comment made us feel. I’ll admit — when I first heard the comment, it bothered me. The vassssst majority of people have no frickin’ clue what childlessness is like so you have to take that into consideration. People in Springfield Ohio in the lower rent areas were kicked out of there apartments many of them tricked by landlords who ask them to vacate for 30 days for renovations and put them in hotels then stopped paying the hotels and not letting the tenants return because they got triple the rent from Haitian migrants who are getting money from the US taxpayer to pay rent leaving US citizens homeless with nowhere to go!
Ive researched this issue in Springfield. The homeless are largely “recently displaced” former renters who’s rental agreements were either not renewed or evicted for “fake” reasons. The shortage of available homes ties directly to the influx of Haitians. Landlords can make 3 times the fair market rental value by renting to Haitians with goveenment vouchers. These people are here either illegally, legally, or are on “temporary protected status”. They have EBT food balances in excess of $10,000 and EBT cash balances of over $30,000. They all drive new cars, often valued in excess of $100,000. This really deserves a Congressional investigation just to get the “hows and the whys” into public awareness and conversation. Sad.
I agree that not all cultures will assimilate into the American culture easily. As a conservative, Christian, French-Haitian American, this is the first time I ever heard of Haitians eating cats… Half of my family is Haitian. All of them are Christian. It would be better to highlight the fact that not all cultures will assimilate easily into the American culture and provide a variety of examples instead of painting an entire culture in a degrading manner that does not encompass Haitians as a whole. I understand that we want to highlight how illegal immigration can, has, and will significantly influence those who have already assimilated into the American culture. This has been happening to small town America for decades. They support the immigrants giving them housing food medical education even supply transportation and the locals are ignored and concerns dismissed. I see it in my own small Michigan rural town. 30yrs ago there were seasonal migrants now there are migrant year round “camps” built across the area. Our schools have had to expand increasing our property taxes to support it. Our children are the ones negatively affected.
Back in the late 70s my dad had to go over to Haiti for Lockhead shipyard and he said he saw in a few front yards dead dogs hanging by the backseat like you would a deer and he thought it was because it was a poor area, and they needed it for survival. For decades, there has been dog meat markets in Africa and in China they boil dogs alive for the endorphins and it’s a delicacy, I have watched a couple organizations rescue these dogs, one man in China stoled a cute little puppy from a meat market running as fast as he could so he wasn’t arrested, this is their culture in these countries, not to mention the voodoo in Haiti and animal sacrifice
Speaking as a person’s living a third world country myself, if you live in some parts of some third world countries, it’s common to eat cats and dogs, native people there would not blink an eye if they see this happening. It started way back when the people were desolately poor, they ate most things that they could get their hands to and that was just a sad fact of life. Idk about other third world countries but in Vietnam where I come from, the practice has been kept to this day especially in the north (not so much in the rest of the country) not because the people are exactly piss-poor or for some sort of voodoo but because they actually enjoy the taste of cats and dogs, some people crave for it even. Not all of them but they do eat cats. They have eaten 4 of my family’s cats through the years and one of my neighbors cats in the Dominican Republic. That’s normal for them. I don’t think they are necessarily eating the pets but definitely using them for their religion. Their country it’s very poor so in there they might eat what they can find like the cats or dogs. I’m not from Haiti but in my country we also practice a similar religion like them and it’s common to sacrifice multiple kinds of animals like birds or chicken. In the United States it’s know about voodoo but if you look up “brujería” you might find what I mean.

I don’t want people here thinking that voodoo or the dark side is stronger than Yahweh in any shape or form. But you can’t go into a spiritual battle by just saying God is on my side and nothing can happen to me without having your spiritual armor fully on. We don’t restless against flesh and blood but against principalities. To battle the spirits you need the Holy Spirit.
This happened to me as a kid visiting Haiti. Right after sunset, a huge shadow flew over me and my family (it looked like a human with wings). That night I had a terrible nightmare. The next morning, I was really sick with diarrhea, fever, and intense sickness. No doctor could help. Within 24 hours, I didn’t eat anything, and was woozy and incoherent. The only solution was to get me out of the country and back into the U.S. I’m ok now, but I will never forget, and haven’t been back to Haiti since.

(before I watched the article) I remember my mother telling me that large groups of black magic users would worship at night. And before there were streetlights, the moon would be so bright it’d shine like the sun. On nights like these, everyone was warned to stay home. These black magic users would dress in all red, and if civilians were caught by the worshippers, they’d be eaten. She’s told me a bunch of scary stories about our family during the night. One time my grandfather was guided home by his Ogun father with a variety of hallucinations. He stayed out too late at a party, and upon arriving home, his father warned him if he stayed out that late again, he wouldn’t receive any guides or protection home.
I heard a story where a powerful man of god was home in Haiti & Some spirits came to his home and where on top of his roof. They were basically teasing him telling him his god(Jesus) is not strong enough to protect him and this powerful man of god told them yall powers are weak.He challenged them and told them can’t even touch children so he prayed over his daughter and put her outside at night in front of his house and.Told the spirits I dare ya to touch her and they couldn’t do a thing his daughter still alive till this day.

My best friend is Haitian (American born) when she visited in high school, she brought me back a wooden statue of a man in a hat with a banjo in his hands. I had bad dreams for months and strange things happened daily. Her father told me to give it to him, and he somehow got rid of it and the nightmares and strange activities finally stopped. My family is Jamaican. Nuff said! This stuff is real!!
I had a friend who’s Haitian and her family was convinced that her mom was under a zombie spell. Her mom had to stay in Haiti while the rest of the family was in the States because every time her mom left the country, she would become a zombie. I met her a couple of times and this poor lady was just an animated vessel walking aimlessly. They said that back home she would be normal. The family broke the curse once they found out who placed it on her, which was an in-law of hers ( the husband’s family HATED her because she liked being ‘in the streets’ and they felt she was disrespecting her husband and family). She’s a devoted Catholic now and is happy and healthy. I’m now most certainly a believer because I saw this with my own eyes and when I looked into her’s it was like she was buried deep inside
I remember my aunty in trinidad used to smoke out the house around 6-7 pm every day. And there was a tree my granny used to call a “cotton tree” it was over hanging the sidewalk and she used to tell me to get my ass home before sun starts setting cause if i pass under the cotton tree after dark jumbie will follow me home. Well one time I couldn’t get a taxi home and had to walk from town to home. I was so worried about getting home late (no cell phones then) that I forgot to cross the road and walked under the cotton tree. Well bet, i heard footsteps behind me on the way home but wasn’t seeing anyone. So i get home and granny is waiting in the porch for me and she’s like “who was your friend walking home behind you? Nigel? (A neighbor boy who went to a school near mine and a lot of times we’d end up in the same taxi home) I said, “granny no, i couldn’t get a taxi and had to walk home by myself ” welllllll. And she says “you cross the street by the cotton tree?” I told her no. Well she would not let me in the house. She made me bathe in the yard with blue soap, indigo, lime and salt before she would let me in. She saw the person (jumbie) walking behind me coming down the road. I heard them but when i turned around I didn’t see them.
I will never live no where, where i can’t come out at night. God made day and night. I am not afraid to go out at night. Where I’m from its night life. I can’t imagine having to make it home before it gets dark. It’s the people if its wicked, and its a shame its that way why. I pray for the people that desire to live in peace away from people that summons wicked spirit to the earth; so the won’t be affected by the evil there of. When I was a kid in Port Au Prince you would hear the animals on the roof moving back and forth as if they were dancing and you were told that they were luggaous and to respect their time! I remember waking up and looking thru a hole outside at night and saw a luggaou in the middle of the street doing a ritual and he looked at me and try to make eye contact but my grandma pulled me away quick! It’s law in Haiti not be outside at night that’s their time…
Trust me Miami is full of Lougawoo’s too. I used to live in North Miami (we nicknamed it Port Au Prince) because it was full of Haitians. I used to hear them at night right in my backyard, they also used to tap on the window to my parents bedroom late at night around 1am. Very chilling! The sound they make is terrifying… almost sounded like a wolf making noise but mixed with a human voice, like a imitation animal sound around 1am-2am of course nobody’s outside at that time. The story I have is crazy!!! Especially when I used to live in Haiti back then and what they did to me as a baby.
Im from The Bronx NY born & raised with ethnic ties to The Dominican Republic. I remember the first time i went, i was told not to be out late at night. Was also told about the brujas 😂, shape shifters, zombies, etc. And to never stare too deep into trees ! Ooh also to stay the fuck away if i see people working on farm land late at night. (Rural parts of DR & sometimes the energy cuts off completely periodically out there.) I vividly remember 1 night trying to sleep at my grandmothers, at around 2am i heard the laughter of a witch outside my grandmothers house then it just zoomed down the block. I remember saying “wtf !” while looking at my cousin who’s ready to cover his face with the blanket, my grandmother from the other room shouts “Callate!” & do not get up to look out the window. She said verbatim “This is their time, respect it”. I have other strange stories i’ve experiecned out there. Some wicked things definitely happen in our realm of exsistance, don’t sleep on it my peoples.

I’m not Caribbean I’m Southern my grandma came from the Deep South all the way to the middle States and she told me one story about how there was a guy he was basically an asshole then out of nowhere he was standing next to a tree in front of the apartment he lived in the tree rose from it’s roots and landed on the man killing him in the middle of the day.
If you a christian and partying at the clubs and living like the world, then you are spiritually naked. There is no way to fights demons without the full armor of God. Tbh, I don’t have any personal stories, but a lot of people in my family do. Today my sister told me about how my grandpa could see spirits and how he would stay up all night throwing spears at them, how my dad almost died twice after my sister dreamed of him falling into a pit of snakes. Scary but interesting stuff.
The closest thing I have to this is I have family in Canada & it’s a known thing there that in the winter, it’s borderline more dangerous to walk home from the bar than drink & drive…bc you can easily get lost & disoriented in blowing snow…& freeze to death. When I first heard that as a kid, I brushed it off, but my family started naming people they knew who died like that & I was like “damn, noted then 😬”

I remember I was in middle school and the teacher said her and her husband celebrated their honeymoon in Greece or Italy and a gypsy woman randomly came up to her husband. She told him that his mother was going to die and to pay her. He gave her some coins and politely asked her to let them be. She claimed he owed her more money by profusely tapping her finger to her palm but they walked away. Shortly after he got a call from his sister saying their mom died. They flew back home after that but she said they don’t know whether or not his mom died of natural causes or if it was the gypsy.
Hi. My brother lives In Haiti. He married a hatian lady and they have two children. He’s a teacher and a preacher there. We’ve went several times to visit them and I know they don’t go out at night. We usually go every year and stay about 2-3 weeks. My sister n law is one of the most beautiful ladies in the world and my niece and nephew are the cutest ever. Loved your story. I also grew up with a very Christian grandmother so between the Caribbean, down south and the African American upbringing I am here with you on the spiritual awareness…. Nah I remember being in Haiti I needed to pee and it was night. Girllllll my bladder was like yeah we good go back to sleep. Girl I had two encounters with lougagous when I was little so yeah. My mom said that I stopped crying and started having convulsions. My dad best friend was on the roof and somehow got in the room I was in. The next door neighbor begged me to come downstairs and I did, the maid or one of my sisters started screaming and my ran downstairs to get me. I sleep with the lights on and have security cameras.
Yup before I even watch ima just say that after 7pm you not supposed to go out or have your door open I haven’t been in Haiti since I was 6 but I can remember when I was in port-au-Prince you would hear odd noises and animals noises while you inside your home also I use to hear things on top of our ceilings I’ve heard they also kill people turn them into animals basically sacrifices
I have walked in Port Au Prince and Leogane at night with family. I recommend you travel with people who know what to do. I wasn’t initiated although I am now. I have a good friend who is a Hougan and I am a Lukumi Oluwo. You must protect yourself. Keep in mind when you fly over water things can weaken. Stay prayed up. Bon chance!

😂 you’re funny as hell! My first experience in Ayiti was beautiful to see but a nightmare. I hated my mother was stuck with her for three weeks, miserable experience. I had diarrhea and my cycle at the same time. I didn’t go out to the pooper house hahaha cause a cousin kept saying tig, tig and I’m like that sound like translation tiger. I said fuck nah, I ain’t come her to die. This was my great grandmother property. My mother family was stealing our food and clothes every time we stepped out and came back something was missing, our mother didn’t believe us until she couldn’t find her bra to wear😆 they should have took her draws too😂 The thing was when it’s dark there’s no light. It’s pitch black even darker then white peoples neighborhoods. If you out in the dark you may only recognize voices of those you know. What was wierd was my cousin wanting to bathe me like I’m a baby. She was persistently asking and trying to serve me! I was annoyed by that. The first time I went in a pooper house I thought death would not find me in them holes😆😭 it smelled so bad I wanted to barf. I pooped in a 🪣 without no shame! I thought you were going to cover more on the night crawlers and walkers. I’ve heard so many tales growing up on how evil doers can be at night, they say if someone is singing outside your house don’t listen, don’t look. A lot of mermaids stories of them taking children! I wish they took me. We didn’t go to no beaches, worst experience of my life.
There is this town in Haiti up high in the mountains. There is a guy who is a priest there in the local parish and basically ever time someone new go visit he warned them that the locals will definitely test them. like you will be in your room at night and you will hear drum playing outside you will get and shit will happen to you while you are sleeping or awake you might see things enter your room might get dragged out outside, slapped, and see shadowy figures. And then next morning you are fine. The locals would ask you how did your night went and you better shut up and said it was fine. Sometimes you might even see the faces you saw the night prior. The priest said they don’t bother him after the first day but the previous priest left.
If the person knows what they are doing and knows not to respond or react to what they see or hear, then they can walk at night. You have to know how to do it even if you don’t have the authority or blessings from the spirits, you can still do it. Your cousin didn’t follow the rules of not engaging anyone while out so he had to die
God protects his children from spells ect. But we are also ordered to have wisdom. If you aren’t doing Gods work then there is no reason why you are out at that time. Well, Solomon Barrow had slaves when Texas was still under Mexican rule. One of his slaves was a voodoo priestess. She would lead the slaves off from the plantation a few miles, and hold ceremonies. The drums and torchlights were heard and seen, by many. He and his wife did not speak a word to each other for 18 years, even though they had 8 children, because he would not give up his slave mistress. Well, the voodoo slave mistress poisoned his food, and he died, and the wife had the slave hung on the plantation. The McCollum Park area on Trinity Bay in Texas is still very much haunted today. I’ve seen much with my own eyes. There is a book on the history of the area, as well as a historical sign at the park, which was in the original land grant, Barrow received from Mexican government, and Barrow still as family members in the area today.

Man my first time I was 4…I don’t remember a damn thing but eating chicken feet and my family telling me how someone gave me some water to drink and I was sick AF like bout to die type of ish. So, I began my career as a truck driver in 2018 and ended up with a driver mentor straight from Haiti. He really believed in voodoo, it was the first person I ever met that believed in it. I nothing about Haitian people. He was telling me stories of people being turned into calfs (baby cows). He also told a story of his aunt paying someone to put a curse on a man. He vomited blood and lost alot of weight, but every time he went to hospital yhe doctor could find nothing wrong with him, according to my mentor. My training was done and I was out on my own and I get a call one day from him. He had taken on a Somalian trainee (apparently Haitians have some rivalry with Somalians) and the guy stole money. He told me he was going to go to Haiti and put a hex on him. I don’t know if its real but he sure believed it.
I’m Mexican & in our culture we believe in what we call mal de ojo (evil eye) & they are normally given to babies/children. This is the actual definition so you can understand better. “”Mal de ojo” or “evil eye,” is a folk illness primarily affecting children, with infants being particularly vulnerable. This supernaturual belief holds that an admiring look or a stare can weaken the child, leading to bad luck, sickness and even death. Infliction of mal de ojo is not normally intentional.” My mom never believed in it & she always said it was all fake. One day she was on the bus with me as a baby & she said this man kept staring at me & smiling and he then straight up asked her if he can touch my hand or something because he didn’t want to give me mal de ojo. Of course as any person would that doesn’t believe in those things my mom said no lol she thought it was weird for some random person to ask that. Well turns out later that night I ended up with a very high fever that wouldn’t go down & a lady told my mom I think they gave her the evil eye & she did a cleaning on me with an egg & since that day forward my mom became a believer. She said when the egg was cracked there was a black dot/circle in the middle like an eye & after that I got better. My mom would always tell me growing up don’t stare at babies too much and if you do happen to, ask if you can touch their hand at least. Be polite about it & if you can’t just stay away and don’t stare because you don’t want to accidentally give evil eye.
