I’m always amazed when historians give presentations about the influences and origins of King Arthur and Merlin and never notice the main one. Europeans and specifically English writers were steeped in biblical history and the stories in the Bible shaped everything in the culture. One of the most influential parts of the Bible is the Old Testament story of the obscure shepherd boy David from the most humble family in the most humble tribe among the Israelites. David was selected and anointed by the prophet Samuel and eventually became the King of Israel and drove out their enemies as well as brought about a renaissance of the culture and a golden age of the nation before it all collapsed again due in part to his own immoral behaviour and that of his son Solomon. So the wizard Merlin is the miracle working prophet Samuel, the boy to be king Arthur is David (who also slew a giant and as with Uther, took another man’s wife and impregnated her with a future great king in Solomon) and the rebellious nephew/son Mordred is David’s son Absalom who rebelled against and fought a civil war against his father King David. There are, of course, other influences of the Arthurian myth, but the origin story of the boy to be king David certainly influenced Monmouth and others to a great degree and the similarities should be noted in any examination of the myth. I’ll be doing a presentation of this on my website at some point as it’s a very interesting topic.
My take from this vid is that Merlin probably wasn’t an actual person as such, but rather an aspect that exists in all of us. Most people seems to have it hidden away for the most part. Merlin actually seems very similar to Shiva in a way, which is also an aspect that exists in all of us. Shiva is a way of describing our consiousness, which has its seat in the brain (on top and inside of the mountain). It’s both the rational and the magical/creative thinking of our brains. It’s the balance between both halves. It’s both blue and red. It’s violet, purple and indigo. Shiva/Merlin seems to be working through the unconsious part of our consiousness that occationally (or maybe constantly) communicates to us through our subconsious. It’s a part of us that is far wiser and far more creative than our daily consious mind usually is. It can most definetly give us guidance, because it is part of us, and therefore wants us the best. But it can also work through us to guide others or to manifest creativity in the external world. Both the fool and “Merlin” are really 2 sides of the same coin. An example could be the young Arthur as the fool, and then Merlin, his inner guidence perusal over him and guiding him. It’s the ‘be aware of your own actions and potential mistakes to learn from them, and then potentially and eventually transforming yourself into a more sensible human-being’ kind of a thing 🙂
35:45 – I was listening to this article while doing something else and wondered who this was – the voice is familiar, and yes, I know him, he is one of the two artists who did the concept art on the Lord of the Rings movies, and he has a long history of doing Tolkien art. Peter Jackson did approach two of the biggest fantasy artists who did Tolkien art, for the movies.
I was disappointed to find no mention of Susan Cooper’s series for young readers beginning with “The Dark is Rising.” This is a masterful and very satisfying re-working of Merlin (and Arthur, and many others) into a modern setting. If you’re a fan of the Arthurian legends, you will enjoy this. It is much more interesting than CS Lewis’s clumsy, condescending, and didactic Christo-centric attempts at sci-fi or fantasy.

Modern pagans tend to overlook the archaeological evidence of human sacrifice used in many, many pre-Christian (pagan) religions, as well as the remarkable variety in religious and spiritual beliefs and practices – since in ancient times the languages, cultures, myths and religions were pretty tough to organize on a large scale. There’s a decided falsity in claiming that primeval roots or knowledge inspire current practices. Fact is, we know very little about those primeval roots.
I saw Colin Morgan play Ariel in The Tempest at the Globe in 2013 and was very impressed with both his acting and muscularity; he swung around in the background most creepily (by design). That production also had the extraordinary Jessie Buckley, playing a very powerful Miranda, and James Garnon playing a disgusting but impressive Caliban! One of the best events of any sort I’ve ever attended.
Merlin has, and always will have a special place in my heart ❤️ Always had a love for Arthurian legend, and I love how this show tells the story of the young Merlin coming into his power and learning along the way. The light vs dark, the Druids, the Catha, of course Kilgaragh the mighty Dragon, all the creatures of folklore and spirits of the Earth, Water and Forest 🥰 But on top of that, the cast is wonderful! They are an adorable group of men and women and acted their parts flawlessly (if it took a few takes in the making 😂) And the scripting is sublime too. Scenery is utterly enchanting and the overall storylines are beautifully written and presented. It is a truly magical experience being entranced in the Adventures of Merlin 💖 Just finishing my 9th watch through!
I kept seeing all these cute clips on YouTube, and I know this show had a MASSIVE fandom, so I decided to level up on my nerd status and binge the whole thing, and like…y’all are just mean. MEAN. I saw probably a dozen articles of clips, hundreds of tumblr posts, etc, and NO ONE warned me about the ending. HOW DO YOU F O R G I V E?!?!
I have been wanting to see this show for quite a while. Forgot about it, and then saw it was on Plex. I just finished the series like 20 mins ago. Not disappointed at all in this series. Being that this series is more then a decade old, I didn’t think that fans would still be into it. I’m so glad I was wrong. Beautiful cast, beautiful story line, great actors. I loved this show honestly. Till they made morgana evil for what still seems to me little to no good reason. That ruined the whole show for me. She was so annoying to me I couldn’t watch an episode with her. I understand why she would hate Uther, but at the beginning she even said that Arthur is a better man than his father and considered Merlin and Gwen friends. Doesn’t make sense to me why she would turn against them too. I guess Merlin did try to poison her, but rightfuly so.
actors on Supernatural were right about when they said they were sad for the show to end cause they would never have another job with that social vibe between that crew. their bloopers are much more silly friend vibes, unless the people who released these cut out the socially “unacceptable” bloopers like the homo vibes like kissing each other, saying there together romantically, making each other lose it and mess up the take and such, which would make sense cause homophobia
