I love it, that Post is ACTUALLY a magic player and not some random rich guy who just wanted to have the card for the sake of only having it. And also hearing him talking passionately about just playing the game with his friends. I don’t listen too his music, but I really like his attitude towards a hobby like this. Keep it going and more power to him. He worked to be able to buy stuff that he wants and he deserves it.
Magic the Gathering player here!! I can safely speak for the Magic the Gathering community when I say that Post Malone was the one person we wanted to have the “One Ring” card because he loves the Magic the Gathering community and does a lot to contribute to it. It wasn’t irresponsible of Post to buy that card. In a decade I am sure it’s value will double. He actually did a very smart thing with his money
I’ve mentioned posty buying that card for $2mil to some people and they were like, really? I bet he doesn’t even play and a real player should have something like that. I’m always like “Nah, posty is a super wholesome guy and is very much into magic. He even goes on popular magic YouTube websites and plays with them. It’s honestly the best case scenario for this situation. A normal due opened it and got a life changing amount of money. A super nice guy who is very into magic bought it and will genuinely appreciate it”
I almost feel it was destined for Post to own this card. He is the only person that is justified in owning it to be honest. With his money helping the original owner, to him also being a huge fan of the game itself & respecting the value & the integrity. Easily could’ve been bought by someone just lookin to turn it around for a quick profit
I absolutely love fantasy, though somehow I’ve never gotten into Magic or LotR, but the whole idea behind that one card is so beyond cool. And tbh I’m happy that Posty got it now. It would’ve kinda sucked if we never heard a thing about it’s whereabouts. And I’m looking forward to where the card goes in the future, tracking it like it’s some championship title.
Love this conversation, love how super chill post is, and actually so down to earth and connected to gaming. baldur’s gate took steam and gamers by storm, as guessed. VR is too expensive for a lot of people. Quest was cheap but a good headset like the index is about 1000 bucks and trackers for more vr experience can easily throw you over 1500-1600 bucks. Once that tech is cheaper, VR will explode. Once it’s normalize or part of consoles, it could take off quickly. I use my Index every weekend.
I am not the biggest Post Malone fan, but knowing the respect that he has for MTG has raised my interest significantly. I started playing during the revised block and have been an avid collector/player ever since. Post Malone is correct when he says it is an amazing experience and the greatest game ever made. It will interrupt your life the instant you decide to make it the main focus of your hobby time.
I respect Joe’s stance about being an addictive personality with games. The reason I stopped playing MTG and won’t go near it again, is because I can’t stop myself. I have to own all the cards, be able to play any deck. The financial cost to keep that up was breaking me so I sold everything and won’t go back. It sure is tempting though.
I think I read the story of that graded card. Apparently, another grading company was running a promotion for that card. 2 airline tickets (to go there and back) to see it getting graded in person, a custom slab label, $1k gift card, booster boxes and extra goodies. The guy instead sent it psa and it got a 9.
The biggest downfall for VR is motion sickness. Those devices are great at manipulating your depth perception, but your body still instinctively knows that there is this screen about an inch from your eyes and therefore all of the motion and movement is hard for your brain to process which in turn makes you feel sick.
You could’ve bought the cleanest power 9 in existence and still had a mill leftover. Not only did you buy a Hasbro card that won’t retain the 2,600,000USD value, you bought a lord of the rings card. Huge waste. You could’ve bought a complete alpha set and had a million left over. You could’ve playsetted EVERYTHING IN LEGACY, MODERN, PIONEER AND STANDARD and still had a mill leftover. As a long time competitive magic player with $70k USD career earnings, gp top 8s, ptq wins, f2f tour top 8s ect, this is absolutely ridiculous.
-No, you bought a $1million dollar card for $2million. -Imagine paying $2million for 1 of-a-kind DLC that destroys your opponents in a article game. You would be certified as one of the worlds biggest losers. -Not like chess at all. In chess you cannot spend money to get an advantage on your opponent with superior game components. FACTS. Not sure what is worse. Listening to joe Rogen talking, or hearing Post Malone’s opinions.
There are so many absurdly wholesome elements to this. 2 million dollars can change a person’s life, and I’m assuming how “he worked at Costco’s” is in past tense can prove that, and while it may very well be irresponsible use of one’s money, Post changed someone’s life and got something in return that gives him true happiness. Everyone’s a winner, no one’s a loser.
It’s not as crazy of a purchase as it might sound. Collectibles can and do appreciate in value. We see it with basketball cards, comics, cars, firearms, art….we even see it in Magic the Gathering itself. Collectibles are an asset class unto themselves and when you combine that with the with the fun and enjoyment that the man is clearly having just discussing it it’s a pretty defensible purchase.
I remember perusal a movie about dungeons and dragons where they basically depicted a hot shot heart surgeon student who barely needed to study to be the top of his class, throwing his career away to play dungeons and dragons… that’s the audience of player magic won over. With the extra attention trading cards have been getting this card is 2 mil and had to sell to a celebrity. Tho it still would have ended up in rich hands with out the extra attention.
Man I grew up bow hunting, doing martial arts, I’m a 11b veteran, and always doing “manly” stuff. I recently had a friend that got me to play a magic commander game, and Post is right, it’s crazy addictive! It super fun, and it does have the chess game kind of feel! Dont play magic if you have an addictive personality, it will suck you in! Lol.
I honestly can’t talk shit. If I had as much money as him, the dumb shit I already buy would just get more expensive. Also his analogy using chess is terrible. Just describe it the way it actually is. You’re basically a Wizard with a spell book. And you’re playing to see who has a better book and knows how to use what they have better than their opponents. And then yeah, 50,000+ cards is ridiculous.
I guess I didn’t realize that MTG was doing crossovers with other fantasy universes… are there any other Magic cards like this? is there an MTG card for Harry Potters fuckin broomstick or the dragon eggs from Game of Thrones? or am I supposed to believe this MTG + LOTR combo is the only crossover they’ve ever made?
Been into MTG since the 90s. Wish I never sold off my old collection back in the mid 2000s. Had something around 20-30,000 cards from beta through mercadian, most of which was from the greatest era of MTG, the Urza block. The game wasnt nearly as complex back then, and I felt like it was so much more fun. What I wouldn’t give to have my old collection back just to play with my kids when they get older.
“I would have just given it to you” That’s my bro Justin. He has given me so many cards through the years. I bet if I had the most expensive ones, I could buy a house by now. Like him though, I just played with them and then passed them on. No one could predict what our original Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, or Alpha cards would be worth. For us players, they were fun. They were toys. I bet I’ve accidentally ruined about 25-100K worth of cards… I put a 1st edition Blue-Eyes White Dragon through the laundry. I bent a Black Lotus back in the day. I traded a sealed holo MewTwo for an entire box of 1st edition pokemon and then gave them to my sister. We just didn’t know. Thankfully, my family and friends did hold onto some of them and they are now enjoying the benefits. My sister just sold her pokemon and paid of her house… It makes me very proud knowing I helped. She sent me a 1st edition Charizard and a sealed 1st edition booster as a gift. I IMMEDIATELY stuck them in my vault…
That’s crazy as it sounds, I feel like the two of them would actually make a good show together as co-host. Very easy natural chemistry and post Malone gives a youthful take to a lot of Joe’s outdated ideas of article games and whatnot. Post can easily pull him into today’s time by giving him references to what the youth are up to while Joe can always reach back into his bag of tricks and educate post on some cool stuff that he didn’t know about. I like listening to the two of them it’s relaxing somehow lol
You don’t EVER give away a pulled single man;I’ve given or traded away rares(usually something that they wanted so I just took what they traded),but in the case of The One Ring I reckon that one’s not possible. Btw Post I must vigorously disagree with you about MTG not being a gambling game:you gamble with everything you do and every decision you make, and NOTHING matters more than having a poker face.
The take on shooters is so spot on… I want to try magic, i do play Yu-Gi-Oh and is so underrated bc you have thousands of interactions between cards and its so much to handle you can’t catch up if you just casually play it, mostly because there is no resource system and you can combo forever sometimes
So, with article games being very stimulating. That is the exact reason I’ve added more relaxing game’s to my library lol I used to ONLY play action games, shooter’s, hack and slash games. And, your right, after you play them for so long you feel over stimulated. Can’t sleep, body is full of adrenaline. I love these games because my normal life doesn’t give me that adrenaline, competitive outlet and such. But, you gotta crank it back a bit and relax lol Fking love a game called UFO: Unidentified Falling Object rn lol
The best explanation of Magic The Gathering is this in its most basic format… A Duel between Wizards… The players assume the role of a wizard, taking turns, utilizing their deck of spells to cause hilarity and mayhem against their opponent(s) in an effort to knock them out… With 60,000 ish unique cards to choose from, strategy and out of the box thinking is encouraged but not necessary as there are plenty of premade decks available for a small substantial fee at your local game store…
Alright y’all, my favorite Commander is Ghave Guru of Spores. He comes into play with 5 +1/+1 counters with the ability to remove a counter from a creature you control and create a 1/1 Saproling and you can sacrifice it to put a +1/+1 on any creature. My engine is to create as many +1/+1 counters as possible. Along with adding abilities that directly impact the creatures +1/+1 counters as well as recycling the +1/+1 counters. It’s by no means the greatest commander but, it’s the first one I’ve ever made and I adore it. What’s y’all’s favorite Commander?
Joe’s right – all good games are addictive, but some developers are very predatory in making the addiction toxic, like paid loot boxes. A good example of the other side of that is Guild Wars 2, still one of the most popular MMORPG’s but it’s really well designed so that you can pick it up and put it down without feeling like you need to put in 6 months of work to get to a comfortable level.
VR is amazing, but it’s not that big because it requires special hardware that you MOUNT ON YOUR HEAD, so there’s another level of dedication past regular article games that you have to go to in order to play, and it’s just not all that convenient for casual play sessions. As far as MTG goes, it’s a great game, but the more new cards come out the harder it will be for new players to join in.
VR will be a thing when the headset will be lighter and thinner. A 3.5k $ Apple headset still can’t do it right… but there is room for improvement. We will get there, soon or later. My Quest 2 is fine for now, but yeah is just a bulky helmet with sensors and screen. Anyway, playing Half Life Alyx is already something incredible, outstanding.
Insane, why not give this money to the poor and people with need instead of buying this much for one card? What is an beloved and full of history oldschool collection of 93/94 alpha, beta, unlimited, 4-horsemen worth than one single card appears and madness begins? The game is killing itself! (my opinion!!!)
I wouldn’t say it’s irresponsible, especially with how it’s the only version of it’s kind. This is like collectors who buy a Babe Ruth signed ball or a one of a kind Van Gough. Like they technically have no value except for people who value it (go up to a kid and ask them how much they’d spend on a Babe Ruth signed baseball, and unless the kid is into baseball, they’d probably think it’s not worth much, or go to someone who doesn’t care about art and ask how much they’d pay for a Van Gough, and chances are, unless it’s Stary Night, not a lot).
Magic is such a great card game. It’s one of those games that even computers built to play it can still lose because of all of the permutations of move options per turn based on different decks, game skill, and luck can just flip a match in a single turn. It really is Chess in a card game. I’ve never been that good at the normal 60 card variants or even Commander but, for some reason I always place high in Limited on pre-release and release nights for sets. I love doing a lot with a little and Limited is the perfect environment for it.
Magic is like crack. I got into it 3 months ago, playing commander and I already have dropped over a grand in it. But I can’t lie I love being able to have ppl come over and play while we shoot the shit. It brings me back to my younger days of having my friends over on a friday night playing N64 and PS1.
Magic is a mixture of chess, poker, and D&D but only slightly because nobody is actually roleplaying or thinking they’re a wizard or an elf. One advantage it has over chess and poker is that it’s more dynamic, because new cards are released all the time and people come up with different rules for what cards you can use. If you have a kid that’s like 10 or older I strongly encourage you to get into Magic with them. It will definitely keep them out of trouble and teach them critical thinking.
“As long as it brings you joy I woulda just gave it to you” Easier said as a multi millied up dude like Rogan, 2m is nothing to him compared to being a good friend to a huge celeb/networker. To a rando guy, thats life changing money. Aint no way Im giving a 2m card away to someone already multi millied up.~ Im thinking about my kids n future lol, Im selling it.
VR isnt big because its too expensive, impractical, uncomfortable, there isnt a good product and there arent good applications yet. There are a few passable VR games and a couple of legitimately good ones. That just isnt enough. If you had AAA titles on a sub $300 device everyone would be playing them. Also if the biggest player wasnt facebook that would also help as their devices, as good as they are, are completely tainted with their bullshit. They feel like bait. Their whole ethos and ethics are completely unhealthy and you can see that in their focus and all their decisions.
I would love to try VR but several things stop me. First, the cost of entry is steep, especially since I am already financially committed to other platforms. My wife and kids wouldn’t appreciate me spending more of our budget on VR. The other being that I have to cut myself off from the rest of the house to use it. I can rarely play a game more than 90 seconds without having to pause and take care of something or answer a question for my wife or kids. Wearing a headset would make that even more of an issue (not to mention all the shots to the groin I already get from my kids when NOT covering my eyes 😂).
boy, I had a deck that was ridiculous a few years back My mtg deck didn’t focus on getting a bunch of creatures out or attacking instead it was a combination of a counter/discard deck its main goal was to force the opponent into running out of cards while being as a annoying as possible with counters and it was a black/blue combo so I had black land cards that when tapped forced the opponent to exile his graveyard which pissed them off even more long story short my friends wouldn’t play against the deck so it just sat and collected dust and I moved and somehow lost it.
Actually, VR is going to explose some day soon. I’m a tatooist and I had a client who told me that she was working on the development of next gen VR. These costs way too much right now and are only used for research, aeronautics or whatever kind of structure that can drop 15K for these. But she told me, once we’ll get there, this is going to be in every living room. I think the reason why it didn’t work is because right now it still makes you sick af. But that won’t last for sure !
Everquest was the same for me, the game is all consuming where food and showers aren’t as important as logging in and exploring with about 50 other zorbos like me(before) I had an easier time quitting heroin. My character was worth about 4k when I quit and I had to give it away in order to live a life
im not sure if I’m right, but i kinda feel like some collectors item like painting are bought at staggering prices because it comes with something you can’t normally purchase legally with money. for example illegal services and products I’m saying Post does this, but someone else must’ve I hope I make sense.
If AI took over earth and I was asked to beat the computer system at something to prove we aren’t useless, I’d pick magic the gathering. So far AI has had a very hard time mastering it because information is hidden and the amount of combinations across all rules makes it almost impossible to simulate every move and a precise outcome. It is the only game I believe the computer hasn’t mastered beyond human capacity.
The reason VR isnt as huge is because games need to be developed for only VR not ported over look at half life alex (developed only for VR) vs any other game. Companies don’t want to spend time and money on development for 1 game on 1 platform. They wany to play it safe and just port thing over with shitty interactions and game play
VR didn’t get more involved in it cuz people are getting to lazy. VR is like it makes you move around gets you tired and people hate exercise anymore which is why they would rather just sit for hours with a wireless controller. Lol 😂 another reason why the Wii died out for a good while. Cuz people didn’t use it the way it was suppose to be use for fun. Like the sports people use to get really into it. Until they figured out you can still play while sitting down also lol 😂
I watched some of the killtony episode faeturing you guys, not great. not a lot of jokes coming from you guys. It’s nice that you guys are famous n’all but if you do kill tony you should pry into the people on stage a bit to lighten the mood or create the atmosphere of the show. post malone has no jokes and as I considered why I figured it would ruin his reputation as a smiley nice guy to rip into all these random people, which is why I couldn’t quite understand why he would do the show if he knew he couldn’t tell jokes, or if it’s because post malone is not the comedian some people are, of course he’s not he’s a rapper.
at 6:20 … I think VR isn’t as popular as it was planned to be is simply due to the fact that it isn’t true VR. It’s still eyes on a screen… its just the screen is really close to your eyes. Once Elon start putting chips in people’s heads we will finally get true VR, which is something that literally puts your consciousness into another realm of existence.
I wish I had mates like Post, instead when I got my mates into it again while we were adults they took it way too fucking serious and started buying/building the best decks and entering tournaments and stuff. I just wanted to chill and do goofy shit, they wanted to end the game in 3 turns if possible. It ended up being a big mistake and fractured the friendships a bit.
