He fears that the constrained network fits into a broader trend of consolidation in the pharmaceutical industry, which aims to lower insurance costs by promoting efficiency. Large chains like RiteAid, Giant Eagle, Sam’s Club, and Walmart remain in UPMC’s Pennie network, while Walgreens and CVS are out. Lavella believes the number of independent locations retained is low.

UPMC’s chief pharmacy officer, Chronis Manolis, stated that the restricted network will lower premiums and encourage more customers to visit those pharmacies. He believes that narrowing networks is one of the levers left in pharmacy.

  • OTC benefits are a joke. The Catalog is fine but it costs more through the catalog. Out in the stores, good luck. Many are not registered and will not ring up or be recognized. Very frustrating. Another issue was changing over from Medicaid to Medicare dual eligibility. I did not get a Medicare card. I had no advanced warning and all of a sudden I had to make a lot of phone calls. No one knew what was going on or what to do as far as plan D. I was told the provider I wanted wasn’t available. LOL. The next day I got a mailing from SSD to choose a provider. Guess who was on it? The one they said wasn’t. I spent 3 days on the phone to get a prescription for an ear infection because of all the problems. I kept being told to call phone numbers I had already called. Pass the buck to save a buck.
