Holy Mary! Enough layers you had to wear but Mein Gott the intensity and layers in all your performances should not be under estimated! Certain characters broke my heart! Don’t want to spoil it for those just experiencing this epic, historic, period tale with dramatic licence! It draws you in and you just can’t stop perusal, compulsive viewing! You will not be disappointed. Mr Dreymon had so much, we mustn’t forget, to carry on his shoulder. His character and many others supporting him. I found you work harder as an Actor when those around you are equally committed to the plot and know they have to up their game if you will so my God did everyone bring it in performance! I could go on but you need to discover this beautiful, poignant at times, incredible epic! I am looking to visit Bamburgh Castle and going to read the books. I don’t know if any of the cast read this but I want to thank you all for getting us through Lockdown and for this absorbing Historic Drama! I enjoyed the movie, but preferred the TV show, I wish they had made another full series. Throughout the Last Kingdom, my frustration was always the speed with which everyone could move around England, seemingly with teleportation or super-human ability. I loved the ending with the shot transition to modern day Bamburgh Castle. As a Londoner living in the north of England, I love being surrounded by ancient lands with place names that are derived from Old Norse. Tussen Tak.
shit I just watched this last night! Wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen but not the best. I enjoyed it over all really. Especially when you compare it to the latest version of vikings with oprah winfrey starring as hakkon 🤮It seemed rushed to me though. Like it was meant to be another season but got chopped down to a movie….and you mentioned this RIGHT at the start lol I have a habit of commenting and liking before I watch >_>
Same, I loved the series. I liked that I knew many of the places referenced from East Anglia when I lived in Thetford, Norfolk. I wish this movie could have been more of a season’s worth of adventure. I also was disappointed with some key points, but overall, I did enjoy and had me in my feels on more than one occasion. I watched the tv series which was ok as entertainment, but historically all over the place: the Anglo-Saxons all look like they’re from the period of the 1st crusade (late 11th/early 12th C); they initially all seemed to be equipped with some bizarre form of wooden, shortened 3rd century-type Roman Scutum shields, then they progress to kite-shaped shields – the earliest attestation of which appears to be in Byzantium in the 950’s. Etc etc etc. At the time the books are set the Anglo-Saxons would have pretty much looked very similar to their Danish/Norse cousins, worn the same type of clothing, used the same types of weapons, even had languages that were mutually intelligible to a high degree.
I agree, I read all the books,all of which i greatly enjoyed, and the regular seasons were nice to watch, but the movie, first of all Uhtred is depicted in the book as looking old, grey hair and such, i missed that in the Film. Then there were so many events taking place in the book which were fully ignored. I wish they had made a whole season of it and I wish they would follow the book more, and I want an aged Uhtred, like a man of his age would have looked at that time.
Personally I think the same they should have made one final season to complete the series. As a whole series it was good. However what was up with Uhtred as a character because he kept on helping & saving the kingdoms & they kept betraying him. After the 1st season he should have said to King Alfred I want Bamberg not that one place Cookhan or the other place in the Mercia

The movie was like a fast moving recap. It lacked depth and real story telling, something the series was actually pretty good in.. And yeah, a man who is trying to inherit a kingdom, who would totally have rivals and enemy lords that wait for a rumor or a perfect moment to murder the successor.. Aaaand he’s gay, there is no reason what so ever, other than Netflix and 2023…
I stopped perusal season 5 because they were trying to push the woke agenda into the series. I’d rather watch a series about legendary african warriors like for example Sundjata instead of seeing a black archbishop in viking age Kingdom of Mercia… there were no black people on the british isles in those days and he obviously got the role for alerior motives. Historical accuracy is a must for me for series or movies based on historical events or characters.
I was utterly devastated and disappointed in the film. The series were so brilliant> I didn’t even mind where they didn’t or couldn’t follow the books. I almost felt the changes complemented the books. But the final 3 books into 1hr & 50 odd minutes!?. I also disagreed in their reasoning it was no longer his story. He was still the protaganist in both books and film so it was still absolutely his story.
I wish we could at least see more historically accurate costuming. I enjoyed this show as a fictional story. But not unlike the Vikings shows, most of the costuming is ridiculous. We do have some good information regarding clothing, styles, architecture, etc. So why do all these medieval productions put characters in weird black leather armor that looks like it should be in a Mad Max movie, or maybe worn by a biker gang. I suspect that production designers of these shows feel the need to outdo one another with crazy cool costumes. But it just makes it all look fake. I think The Northman film shows how great historically accurate productions can look on screen. Do more of that. Less of leather bondage punk rock halloween costumes
It was definitely too rushed and missed a lot of key points from the books. Definitely would have been better as a series. Echoing what someone else said, Uhtred should’ve looked older too. The battle at the end just didn’t feel like a large scale battle at all, more like a skirmish. Supposedly 7 kings with 7 armies!? Just didn’t seem that way to me. Always annoyed me that they made the Saxon shields rectangle and not round like they should be. Just to cater to the demographic not familiar with this period of history, who I presume the program creators thought wouldn’t be able to differentiate Viking from Saxon. I did enjoy it however, just feel it would have benefited greatly from a whole series, to help develop a lot of things and the overall narrative.
After such great seasons with the show and quite a build up of the movie, it fell pretty flat, for me. Just feels like they tried to cram as much shit into a movie, as possible. Like you mentioned, the show was very accurate for the most part, and they ran a little loose with accuracy in this movie. It was still entertaining and wasn’t terrible, just prefer the series over the movie. King Athelstan playing stir the porridge with the Dane, was an odd take too. Great review though, dude 👌🏼
As Athelstan was the rare exception of an English king who never married, perhaps the series just pushed the boat out to the next dock. But speculation about certain English kings being gay – or at least bi – is hardly new. Richard II very probably was (and he was married to a woman who hated him so much she usurped him, threw him in prison and he was eventually executed by having a red hot poker shoved up his royal bum), and there has also been speculation about Richard Coeur de Lion. Anyway, I liked Seven Kings Must Die. Thought the final battle scene rocked. And the scene where Uhtred saw a vision of his Norse friends partying in Valhalla, knowing he was not to join them, made me puddle up.
The show was always a bit cheesy and that is okay for what it was. This movie was just not good, I don’t know if it was for contract reasons that they did this instead of a season or they just hadn’t had enough good writing. That made the bad written parts so much more blatant as they weren’t embedded throughout a season but clumped into this one movie. The historical and identitarian revisionism we have known by now see Barbaren or the upcoming cleopatra is such a deranged view on history and entertainment. We as the audience can handle flawed characters, we can handle injustice of the past, as we have learned and grown…these people are so stuck up in their spheres…it taints their craft, or they were just bad at it in the beginning -.- 3/10 a conclusion to a show that deserved better.
That film was terrible, I absolutely adore the series but I’m going to pretend that the film never happened. Full of historical inaccuracies, false gay plot lines thrown in to appease the current political climate rather than sticking to the facts and it was just all over the place. It was clearly cobbled together in haste. Should have stuck to the facts and made it a season, without the political interference and inaccuracies. Also making out that the first “great” king of England was weak, gullible and easily manipulated was cringe worthy. What a waste of what could have been an incredible ending to the season.
Aethelstan being gay, or possibly just completely asexual, stands a better than average chance of being true if you are experienced at reading in between the lines of historical documents (which is probably why Bernard Cornwell very subtly made him so in the books). In this time period, as a monarch it was understood that the most important thing you did was marry for position and attempt to produce heirs. Aethelstan understood this concept perfectly well, as he married most of his 9 sisters off for political gain, yet quite oddly did not do the same himself. He instead declared himself to be chaste, in a time where it was very unusual to live this way, and essentially only monks did so (the Church would not start making chastity a requirement for the priesthood until the late 11th century so even many priests were married in this time period and had children that would succeed them in the Church). Kings were known to swear to live a monastic life in chasteness – Constantine II of Scotland actually did this – but they would renounce their kingship and step down first, as publicly declaring they would not even be trying to make heirs was seen as weakening their position. It is also notably unusual, for a young unmarried man of noble birth, that were not even any rumours of any bastard children on Aethelstan’s part. Other tidbits scattered throughout historical documents are of interest, such as descriptions of Aethelstan’s appearance, such as William of Malmesbury stating that he was “a youth of unusual beauty and physical grace”.
