Dragon Age: How To Get Rift Spells?

Ring Velvet can be obtained from most enemies in the Exalted Plains by slaughtering every Venatori agent. To obtain the Rift Mage specialization, one must complete the Way of the Rift Mage quest, which is one of three potential quests for a mage Inquisitor to obtain a class-specific specialization. Rift spells can only be used to amplify other spell-trees until you get at least upgraded Abyss and Veilstrike. Once the entire Rift-tree is open, enemies can be easily CCed.

The Rift Mage Fire build specializes in weakening enemies, pulling them together, and using the weakened state to restore mana with damage. Recommended 8 spells for Rift Mage include Barrier (Elegant Defense), which has a shorter cooldown than longer duration.

Unlocking the Rift Mage Specialization involves finding Ring Velvet, Venatori Tomes, and Writing on Rift Magic. The Inquisitor has the special power to close fade rifts and open them later. Rift Magic is a specific magical discipline that can be obtained in Skyhold from the table located in Solas’ room or from Willvan in Val Royeaux.

To receive the Rift Mage Specialization, one must complete the Way of the Rift Mage quest, which initiates by speaking with their Trainer. From the Rift magic tree, one should focus on Mark of the Rift, as firestorm is not worth getting unless it’s necessary.

How to activate mark of the rift?

The Inquisitor employs their Anchor to create a rift, tearing asunder the Veil and drawing enemies into the Fade through a process of physical suction. The Mark of the Rift, which is powered by focus, inflicts continuous spirit damage and stuns enemies within the designated area of effect. The duration of the spell is increased with greater focus. More formidable adversaries may evade the skill and may not be vanquished instantaneously.

How do you get rift pieces?

In LEGO Fortnite, Rift Shards can be obtained by destroying a Bus Station near your spawn location. A distinctive noise and a blue light on top of the fast travel system can be heard near a Bus Station. To destroy it, use an Epic Pickaxe, which can be crafted at an Epic Crafting Bench using 8 Obsidian Slabs and 5 Frostpine Rods. Once you have broken down the Bus Station and collected the Rift Shards, the recipe for a new Bus Station will unlock, and the blueprint for setting up your own Bus Station can be found in your Build Menu.

How do you unlock arcane mage?

The phylactery contains the memories of an elven arcane warrior who has been trapped for centuries. The spirit offers to teach you the secrets of the Arcane Warriors in exchange for setting its spirit free by placing the phylactery on an ancient altar. The altar is located to the left of the phylactery. By receiving the memories, you can unlock the Arcane Warrior specialization for the mage and 250 XP. To unlock the specialization, interact with the phylactery and place the artifact on the stone altar.

Where is the Rift Mage trainer?

After the completion of the war table operation Specializations for the Inquisitor, three trainers will appear at Skyhold, including Your Trainer, who can be found in the Lower Courtyard. She offers to train the Inquisitor in the ways of the Rift Mage and will disappear once the quest is completed. Your Trainer is described as a scattered professor of astounding ability and focus in her area of expertise, with an appearance of being stuffed with scrolls and gear for every eventuality.

She promises to provide the best instruction, as she has already taken the risk and the price has been paid. Your Trainer is also mentioned in dialog, initially recanting saying that but later expressing her pride in being a member of the Mages’ Collective.

How to use Rift Mage?

In Dragon Age: Inquisition, you can use a mage specialization called Rift Mage to catch stray magic around weakened enemies and increase their damage. This specialization creates a tiny rift that pulls enemies towards a central point, allowing you to cast Pull of the Abyss more often. The risk of this manipulation is great, as there are no dedicated tomes dedicated to it, and it has not been time for academics to mitigate the risk.

How do I activate Rift Herald?

The Rift Herald is a powerful neutral monster in Summoner’s Rift, located in the baron pit. Its Eye of the Herald can be crushed for 3. 5 seconds to summon it as your team’s ally. The Herald has 4000-6400 health, 425 movement speed, and 80-200 attack damage. Basic attacks deal 3 of Herald’s current health bonus damage and base AD. Slaying the Herald drops the Eye of the Herald for 20 seconds, which can be picked up by one member of the slayer’s team. The Herald spawns once per game and despawns permanently at 19:45 or 19:55 if in combat.

How to get rift magic?

The Way of the Rift Mage is a side quest in Dragon Age: Inquisition that a mage Inquisitor can complete to obtain a class-specific specialization. To complete this quest, the Inquisitor must assemble a Tome of Rifts, study rift magic, and consult their Trainer. Tomes can be collected from Venatori at Ghilan’nain’s Grove, Halin’sulahn, and the Desolate Bank in the Exalted Plains. Readings can be found in followers’ belongings or book merchants’ wares.

The quest becomes available after completing the main quest from the Ashes and relocating to Skyhold. Completing the war table operation, Specializations for the Inquisitor, unlocks specialization quests after leaving Skyhold for the first time.

How to get Venatori tomes?

To collect Venatori Tomes, go to the Exalted Plains and kill Venatori agents. They are harder to find outside the Exalted Plains except for specific storyline missions. Ring Velvet can be obtained from most enemies, so gather everything at the Exalted Plains by slaughtering every Venatori agent. Once you have all the ingredients, craft a Tome of Rifts at a requisitions table and deliver it to your Trainer. She is located near the front gate of Skyhold and is not marked on the map. The trainer is not marked on the map but is located near the front gate of Skyhold.

Why can’t I use the mark of the rift?

In In Your Heart Shall Burn, the ability wheel becomes unavailable once you die, causing Mark of the Rift to not work. To fix this issue, load a previous state where your abilities should be working. After the movie, you encounter the Mark of the Rift in an underground place, but you can’t use it at first. When you press continue, the game loads up, but all your attacks disappear from the GUI. Now, you can only use your default attack using R2, without seeing your other attacks on the GUI. This glitch is unacceptable for an AAA game and isn’t a new bug. The player is unsure how to get out of this issue and is not interested in retrying the boss fight.

Where can I find the rift?

The Rift, located in the southeastern corner of Skyrim, is one of the nine Old Holds and is one of the four oldest. It is home to major settlements like Riften, Ivarstead, and Shor’s Stone. The Rift is surrounded by lush, autumn-colored valleys and rivers, surrounded by mountains to the south, east, and northeast. The Rift is situated on an immense plateau, making it one of the most isolated holds in Skyrim. The main stronghold, Fort Greenwall, is located just north of Riften, between it and Shor’s Stone.

The Rift is teeming with wildlife, both docile and hostile. It serves as an excellent hunting ground, with encounters with hunters and poachers common. Bears, Sabre Cats, Frostbite Spiders, and wolves often hide in the foliage and ambush unsuspecting travelers. This combined with the arduous and time-consuming nature of traversing the Rift can be dangerous for low-leveled players. The Rift’s coat of arms features two crossed daggers.

  • Thank you! I tried to unlock this area, but got wiped out at the first fade riff I came to. Save scummed and followed your guide. I’ve been saving points for the specialization, I’m not a fan of respect, it seems cheaty to me. But, I do understand how it might be needed the way these speculations work in the game. BTW, I’m a big DA fan, played DAO like 8 times, all the origin stories. Got through DA2 once, it was great till the ending. I had to wait to play this because my old PC was not able to run it. I’m also a Qunari Mage, just like in your guide. I think mine is better looking though. lol.

  • I know that I’m perusal this article 5 years late lol but I still wanted to like, sub and comment anyway…this article helped me out, thanks very much for the hard work you put in. I noticed that you also have a walk through for Greedfall, I just happen to have it up next when I finish DAI…I’ll be sure to consult those articles as well 😉

  • Umm, I happened to get the tomes as random drops while free roaming and shit. but for some reason the writing at the beginning is not on the table or anywhere else! also Solas isn’t there (I don’t want to spoil the main story for anyone, sorry) so does that mean i can’t get it or is it a glitch of some kind?

  • I realize that she’s not trying to be and that’s what’s so funny is that she’s hilarious without meaning to be. I love her I know how to smoke to die and I can teach it the stone fist and stone armor with my favorites from the first game by the way. So anything that allows me to use Stone fist again would be awesome favorite besides the Knight enchanter of course.

  • I know this is an old ass vid but nothing is dropping ring velvet, I’ve done like 6 rifts and killed everything I could in the fallow mire and exalted plains and I’ve gotten nothing. It even says on the wiki you can get it by gathering cloth at the war table near Suledin Keep, ive done it twice and only got velveteen. Is this a glitch or something, im considering getting the dlc so I can just buy it

  • I have a fantastic mage setup for you to try out. It combines this build with the Knight Enchanter specialization, in a way. Now, my mage specializes in the Knight Enchanter tree for three major things: Spirit Blade + Clean Burn synergy, Barrier + Chaotic Focus synergy, and insane mana regeneration. Your Spirit Blade pretty much replaces your auto attack since it has no cooldown, and only 10 mana cost. Every time you swing the Spirit Blade, you reduce the cooldown of all your spells by 1 second. I shouldn’t have to explain how great that is. And you’re probably wondering where the “Rift Mage” part comes in. This is it… You need to have a staff or armor crafted with Fade Touched Nevarrite; this grants you a chance to cast Pull of the Abyss on hit. Yes, you now have the ability to become a Rift Mage and Knight Enchanter at the same time! Also, if you can, have gear that has a chance to cast Hidden Blades alongside your PotA gear. The spells I use give me great chances of casting PotA. Chain Lightning and Energy Barrage are my two beauties, especially since they have virtually no cooldown thanks to Clean Burn, and are spammable due to your massive mana regeneration. After PotA is casted, do what is shown in the article: cast Static Cage in the center. The stupendous amount of hits against your enemies constantly spit out more PotA’s, which provides potentially infinite crowd control as long as you are spamming lightning. All these hits also send out Hidden Blades all over the battlefield, greatly increasing your DPS, and can even send out more PotA’s since they count as hits (duh).

  • I have mixed feelings about this build, on one side the lightning tree compliments the aoe control aspect with it’s multi target damage, on other the interaction between shocked -> weakness applying sleep and removing weakness shoots the rift into his own foot because you lose the benefit of all your weakness passives (ESPECIALLY the mana return one. Though the increase damage and status duration are helpful too), meaning you are often starved for mana.

  • 17:50 I shuddered in utter satisfaction when I saw those numbers flying out. xD I’m personally addicted to fire mines, but I really enjoyed perusal your awesome AoE lightning build! Thank for making another awesome character build guide; I’ve already recommended my friends to your website because of your clear, concise, and informative manner of commentary and delivery. I look forward to any and all future uploads, including more article guides from your Black Desert series. 🙂

  • this build works…but he’s using it wrong. 1. use static cage, then whatever recovers mana. 2. use pull of the abyss and get that upgrade that makes pull of the abyss explode doing like 600dmg 3. recover then drop them then remove barrage, this class is not single target based and can never be except with KE replace with a rune, fire or ice depends on the enemy…if it’s hakkon, use ice until hakkon himself, if it’s desent, fire all the way, if its trespasser…anything works. but it works better if it weakens. after selecting a rune and upgrade…never the triple rune if you’re not KE. …gonna see if pull if the fade touched pull if the abyss is any good with actual rift mage, so that fade touched, I’m hoping works with the upgrade of additional dmg…if so, goddamn!

  • My greatest moment was combing Solas’ Pull of the Abyss with my Anchor to take out 5 Red Templars that were 4 level above us at the time. Since then I been trying to figure out combos. And in my next play through I’m choosing a rift mage; do to someone doing something to block off the only source of rift magic, if your not specialized into it yourself. Trying to avoid spoilers. How am I doing some far?

  • A fantastic combo is necromancer terror with the armor reduction upgrade, mixed with energy bombardment and static cage. Probably the best dps a mage can achieve, especially if paired with belt of the storm pact, and the terror/ static cage combo provides great control as well. Pair it with mana regen passives like the spirit tree’s passive and winter stillness and you can prioritize the strongest enemies in a group while providing enough control over the weaker enemies so your party can pick them off by themselves with no problem.

  • For the Weapon and Shield Reaver, I would like to see a build that can maintain somewhat low health like around 50% and retain high gaurd to do so. The low health will allow you to make the most of your Ring of Pain, Dragon Rage, and Devour. Stamina generating passives or even accessories help too. Thanks for reading the comments section, few youtubers do that nowadays 🙂

  • If you’re perusal these articles while replaying the game keep in mind that all the passives work nowadays ”at least on pc idk about consoles” and if you have DLC there are new upgrades you should consider. Btw if you want to just crush nightmare difficulty have 2 characters in the party with this type of build at the same time. I gave solas static cage on top of myself using it and my god having 2 castings of that going off right after first one ends makes everything just melt.

  • I’m sure you know this now but this is for anyone still learning the game… Rift Mage and Lightning just do not mix. All the advantages of Rift Mage disappear if you mix in Lightning. The Rift Mage has amazing passives but ALL those passives rely on enemies being weakened. All 3 Rift Mage spells can apply Weakness. The problem is, that Weakness + Lightning/shock = Sleep. In other words enemies end up asleep and lose the weakened state. You thereby lose ALL of the advantages of being aRift Mage. If you want to be a Lightning mage, best go Necromancer or Knight Enchanter. Fire, Ice and Spirit are all fine. Lightning is a no no. The one exception is Energy Barrage. This a great spel but, although it’s in the Storm tree, it’s damage is based on your staff type. Thus, if you have a fire or ice based staff, you’re fine taking Energy Barrage. Just don’t use an electricity based staff. In fact, that holds true for all Rift Mages, with or without Energy Barrage. Don’t use an electricity based staff! Btw, as well as Energy Barrage, there are a couple of passives in the Storm tree that are ok to take. In fact, they’re pretty good. Gathering Storm reduces all your cooldowns with each basic attack. Conductive Current increases your damage, based on how much mana you’re missing. You can probably get away with Static Charge, as it’s a defence against melee attacks, so won’t proc that often. Thought there are much more useful passives, for a Rift Mage. Stormbringer should definitely be avoided.

  • Rift mages are the best. I can cast a every spell on my bar loadout on every cooldown and they cooldown pretty fast. Stonefist w/ upgrade, Restorative Veil, Winter Stillness, Flashpoint, Clean Burn, and Gathering Storm. I almost never use basic attacks. If I do its only 1 volley and then I am back to casting spells. Gotta Love Restorative Veil. My favorite is to pull em in with Call of the Abyss, Cast Lightning Cage. Then proceed to AoE everything down. It freaking rocks killing 5 people at once.

  • Just another question/comment. Is Vivienne running your support KE build? And I was very curious on what to run with a spirit build but being that almost no enemies are resistant that’s a very good idea. Especially on nightmare where the enemies that are resistant only feel 1 damage. I think I’m gonna do something similar especially cause the mana regeneration from rift is so immense.

  • so, i like to run a bit diferente set, a use fire mine right after static cage and since a like to bring 2 mages (vivienne and my rift mage inquisitor), i realy invested in the ice schol all the way down to get blizzard, the combination really is powerfull, becase all this habillities deal area damage. I kill all enemies at once, really effective. then some rogue powers also help, like explosive shot, especialy when combined with poisoned arms.

  • A thing worth mentioning about the Stonefist upgrade is the fact that it is an AoE of 4 meters and how wonderfully that goes together with Pull of the Abyss! The Pull clusters and weakens enemies. Combined with all the buffs against weakened enemies, you throw the Stonefist boulder for 115% of 500 weapon damage and you’ll hit all the enemies since it’s now an AoE and the enemies are clustered. To go NUTS, add a second Spirit/Inferno mage that sacrifices own barrier to power a Fire Mine and place that centered in the Pull of the Abyss rift for crazy damage. (Lastly, have an Assassin Rogue cast Mark of Death + Hidden Blades on a single on top of this madness and they won’t stand a chance!)

  • I was so overwhelmed when I bought this game and thanks to you I’m playing RPGs right! I used to stick to boring sword and shield but now I’m a lvl 13 rift mage and lightning and ice are my favorite elementals. I was just wondering what party I should roll with? I love Dorian(literally, my character just made out with him lol) and because I’m avoiding fire alltogether, but Vivienne is great for support but she’s annoying. I’ve always got Sera or varric and both can dual wield efficiently.I was thinking of cass as a support tank with varric or Sera duel wielding up close so me and Dorian can hang back…any suggestions?

  • My sword and shield Reaver build is quite versatile, I’d say. In my build, I’ve included skils from SnS Tree, that keep my Inquisitor alive, like these passives and Shield Wall, and Shield Bash for the guard damage. I took War Cry and Charging Bull, to keep the aggro on me and generate guard. And as you said previously, nearly everything from Reaver Tree is useful. The way I play my character in battle could be divided in two stages. First, being defense stage is where I taunt my enemies and usually put Ring of Pain on (i just love this skill since Origins) and wait for Terrifying Fury passive to work (that or I use Dorian to inflict fear on enemies). When my enemies flee away, I bash down my target and continue with stage two, which is offense. And that’s when Dragon Rage comes into play. Deal as much damage as possible and go back to stage one, to regain control over the battle.

  • I had no idea Static Cage zapped enemies that took damage from other sources. Lack of attention on my part… but maybe this also pairs well with Necromancer. Not only will enemies panic and run into the walls of the cage to get zapped even more, but with the bonus damage against panicked enemies, and with Walking Bomb, the damage potential is even greater. Or you can just do the article’s build and bring Dorian along, either way works.

  • I’m lvl 17 LRM and I still can’t figure out my party set up. I’ve been enjoying Cass as my support warrior and usually swap Cole and Sera depending on what mage I bring. Would your cryomancer work with this build, which is fantastic by the way 🙂 I have Vivi speced as a support/cryo KE with spirit and winter full and working down the KE tree and I pair her with sera. Dorian is my pyromancer and I use Cole as my rogue so no matter what I have two up front and two in back. What’s your favorite party for this kick ass build?

  • KineticGTR How you doing? Liking all your guides, have been very useful. So far I’m a level 13 Sword/Shield. Bout to be trained for specializations. Since theres already a champion ss, and a reaver 2h in the party, i was thinking of becoming a Sword Shield Reaver. Do you agree with this? Also, what is your favorite class/skill?

  • I don’t know man, weakening your enemies is groovy, but just slaughtering them outright; Lightning/Knight Enchanter is just the sickest bomb; perusal your enemies rocket around in your cage, paralyzed half the time, taking insane damage while you are invulnerable to everyone inside or out of it (thanks to your barrier never going down) is too much fun to give up.

  • Hey Kinetic, so here’s my question… I’m on level 9, my character is a lightning mage, I have blackwall as a two hander till champion, Cassandra as a sword and shield till templar, Sera as a dual wielder, and solas as my cold mage… who do you think I should take with me. I’m on nightmare difficulty

  • which build do you prefer? I quite liked your previous rift mage build as well. it seems all you’ve changed is some passive stuff (which way or may not work so I won’t mention anything about it) and the fire mine and the lightning barrage ability. other than fade step for glacial. but do you think the barrage is better fit instead of the fire mine? I want to know because I am going to be picking a specialization soon and want to know how to respec. I love your articles! they are very nice to listen and watch with all of the good information you have. please let me know! keep up the awesome Dragon Age work my friend.

  • Hey Kinetic wondering if you could either do or give a basic set up for an artificer dual dagger rouge a friend of mine and i are doing a duo play through and he wants to go artificer with the dual dagger rouge however there has been a problem with the class for me when i use it with varric because for some reason his elemental mines fizzle out more than they actually detonate and it seems as tho that would be a huge part of the build

  • So this version (even the previous one btw) of the rift mage makes it mandatory to bring another mage in the party for the barriers casting? And then, is Vivienne as the Knight Enchanter build to pick over Dorian? I usually take two warriors for the guard skills who make them last longer but maybe i could craft heavy armor for the barrier mage with some silverite if i’m the one who needs Magic 🙂

  • Awesome. Now, my question is, since my Solas really, really would like to rain down lightning on our enemies like a flippin’ thunder god, any news regarding the Storm line of passives? Do they still glitch or have they been patched? Any info would be highly appreciated folks, please! Thanks in advance!

  • Can someone help me fix this potion glitch problem. OK so I started a new game on nightmare mode and I realized like 10hrs In that my party is sharing the health potions. Idk why but they are. I read online ppl saying that you indeed share health potions but I went back to my first chatarcter I made when I beat game on hard and my party DOESN’T share potions each member has there own supply of health potions. My question is is it because I’m playing on nightmare that my party shares health potions?

  • Hey Kintetic, love the articles man. Keep up the awesome work! I have a few questions. This build looks awesome, I’m heading towards something very similar. Would you say the storm build is better than your fire rift mage build that you did before? Would you also say that his is better than your fire Necro? I’ve heard mixed things about Necro, how it’s the weakest of the mage specs, any opinions on that? Also, I’ve noticed that you don’t do many builds with Blizzard. Any reason for that? I’m at the point in my game where I’m picking a spec and just wanted your opinions since you make great, very complete, articles. Thanks again! Edit: Also, I wanted to ask some more about Necro. I’ve been using it on Dorian and have noticed a few issues. Walking bomb only detonates for 200% damage and I don’t think Simulacrum lasts for 10 seconds. Do you have any experience with either of those?

  • Hey is Sera good dual daggers? My party is all based around crowd controll (stuns and such) and i wanted to make sera daggers to synergize with poison AoE and stun (sleep powder) currently i have her as bow and shes kind of weak to be honest but i kept hearing she dies so easily if AI is controller her. What do you think? I’m playing on nightmare (party is KE viv, your tank cass build, necro mage (my character) and sera)

  • These are great builds…don’t get me wrong…but PLEASE…you’re showing them for level 17 (in this case atleast)…is there any chance you might be so kind as to, for someone about to really start getting into this game over the next few days, maybe let us know where to spend some of the points over say the first 10 levels? I can see how great it is overall but what should we pick first? And also, do you still have barrier for protection?
