I agree, they will sell every pass they possibly can. If they want to reduce capacity, they will simply limit the reservations. It really isn’t much different to them simply closing the gates and stopping day-of ticket sales like they used to, but now they can better plan ahead based on reservations.
It is my understanding that your “year” does not start until your first entry into the gate (along with a reservation of course). If that is correct you could buy the Magic Key on Aug. 25 and if you have days left on your California pass (as we do) you would use those first and then use and start up your new Magic Key pass afterwards and your year starts then. Please let me know if I am right or misinformed. Thanks!
There is also a 4th option regarding un used tickets: Just hold on to them and if you know that you will renew your Magic Key or visit sometime in the future, past your Magic Key experation, use the “expired” ticket towards an upgrade. Unused tickets don’t lose their monetary value, even when expired. You just have to pay the difference between the ticket and a current ticket and or Pass.
So tonite I bought a 1 day park hopper for January ….then I realized there was a magic key with payments so now I’m wanting that vs the ticket I bought tonite…are you saying I have to wait until January the day of my ticket to upgrade to a magic key and then the money I spent will go towards the 174.00 down payment! But what happens if there is no magic key in January one of the 4 keys already sold out? Can’t I just call Disneyland tomorrow to change what I bought tonite?
My new current question is if there are discount prices for extra tickets if you go with someone who doesn’t have a pass. Want to get the Enchant lvl pass because we’re from out of state but with an open schedule to go during the off season of what have you. Might take one or two people along who don’t have the desire to get anual passes.
Mr. Baked, thanks for the update. The ticket upgrade sounds like a big mess and miss on Disney’s part. If I have to want until the final day to upgrade, which then back dates to the first date, I’ve lost the value of the magic key during that trip. I lose out on the 10% discounts, lounge privileges, exclusive key holder menu items, and exclusive key holder merchandise. There has to be a way to upgrade and convert over existing reservations so can get the full value of your key day one.
I have a So Cal 3 day resident ticket; I’m wondering if I can upgrade to a regular 4 day ticket and then upgrade the regular ticket to a magic key? Have you heard if anyone has tried that? I know for sure they used to allow the So Cal tickets to be upgraded to the old annual passes because I did; I wonder why they aren’t allowing it now?
From what I understand unused tickets can be applied to your magic key at the box office at 7 AM unused tickets now the three day California tickets I believe if they are unused ones I have not seen them the box office will give you the information to mail them in to a PO Box to Disney can you explain why are you are looking for a reimbursement which will come to you in an email as a gift card but you were right if you want to keep your reservations you need to keep your tickets and upgrade after you leave the park or during that day and that will be your official day of your magic key any ticket already used multiple days before the 25th should not work because there is no way to make magic keys work before they sell But always call ask your questions if you need to call two or three times to get to ask more questions because everybody has a different opinion sometimes good luck
To our surprise, they allowed us to upgrade our 3-day passes ($199) we bought in February of 2020. We used our first 1st ticket in February 2020, 2nd ticket in June 2021 and our third/last ticket in November 2021. Leaving the park, we stopped by the ticket booth and they credited us our original $199. Essentially, we got $199 discounts towards new Magic Keys that expire November 2022. We’re so delighted!
So if I’m upgrading a multi-day pass, and I go into the park on the last day, scan my ticket, then leave the park and go to the booth and upgrade, can I go back into the park that day? And if the answer is yes, what if that last day on my multi-day pass is blacked out for the type of key that I upgrade to, am I then out of luck and can’t go back into the park?
If I buy a Magic Key with blocked out days, may I use a previously purchased ticket to reserve a blocked out day? Example: 12/18 & 19 are blocked out for the Magic Key but I have a 2 day hopper. May I make reservations for 12/18 & 19 using my 2 day hopper or am I blocked because of the Magic Key I chose?
I want to buy the pass but not use it until December. I have tickets for November 1st. If I buy the paid in August can I just use my regular ticket in November and then activate my pass in December? I’m thinking this will extend the use of my pass an extra month since my trip in November is so short I’d hate to use my pass for that one day. Hope that makes sense lol
Will the upgrade of the Magic ✨ Key 🗝️🔐 passes allow families with little princes and princesses to go to the Royal Hall 💖😊😁😀☺️🤠🤠😸🙂😃🙂❤️💙💞💗💟😺😸🙂😃🙂❤️💙💜 and the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique? Which Magic ✨ Key 🗝️🔐 pass allows families with little princes and princesses to go to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and the Royal Hall? If that Magic ✨ Key 🗝️🔐 pass can 🥫😸🙂😃🙂❤️💙💜🗝️ be upgraded, you and your wife will be able to take your daughter to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, where she’ll be getting a princess makeover, and the Royal Hall, where she’ll be having meet and greets with Ariel, Snow White and Cinderella, when she is old enough that is.
I’m confused I have a 3 day park hopper for September 19 – 21 you said enter the park and use the first two days then go to the ticket booth and upgrade the full amount for a magic key, why would Disneyland give you full value of your park hopper ticket (300 + dollars) if you have used up the value of that ticket?
Hi! quick question. I have a 2 day vacation package(hotel + tickets) to disneyland in May. Is it possible to buy the Magic pass now, change my name on one of the 2 day tickets to my friends name, and reserve a ticket under the magic key pass once I buy it?I think ultimately I just want to be able to use the magic key pass perks(discount on food and shop) for my May trip. Not sure how best to approach buying the Magic pass.
Won’t lie, I’m kind of bummed about not being able to upgrade over the phone. Like I partially understand from the reservation standpoint, but also it kind of sucks if you wanted to be sure to take advantage of that 66 day thing and have a reservation/ticket for November or further (66 days from Aug 25 is Oct 30). That said I did just think of something with what you said about the 3rd “just use it” option. What if there was a day you knew you really wanted to go that was blacked out under the Believe Key but it was just that one day and you could work/live with the blackouts otherwise. May as well just get the Believe on the 25th and use that existing ticket for that blackout day to save the 450. Granted you get a lot more for that 450 difference including full parking vs half off and better discounts so it may even out, but it is an option
I happen to have a single day, regularly priced park hopper for 8/25. Can I upgrade to the Dream key that same day after I have entered the park? I have no other tickets or reservations for later dates – I think got a bit confused when you said don’t buy a pass on 8/25 and just want to clarify. Thank you
So what about if I want to get the enchant key, and I currently have a 2 day park hopper for October 22-23 but I want that pass and it is blocked out for the 23rd. Should I upgrade end of the day on the 23rd? Or would I be able to enter the park on the 23rd in the morning go back out and upgrade and be able to go back in?
Excellent information!!! How about tickets as part of a hotel package purchased direct with DLR? I was told by a CM we may need to re-work our reservation at the Grand Californian and remove the tickets and purchase separate tickets then upgrade those. If we do that then we also loose the DLR transportation from and to the airport. Thoughts?
@Freshbaked! Hi Dave! After 51 years in Colorado, this CO native moving to Irvine next week to fulfill my life long dream of going to Disney whenever I want! Question: I’ll be purchasing Magic Key Aug 25 @ 10am, but REALLY want to book Xmas Eve and Xmas days. Any tips for this? I’ve been perusal and they haven’t released either of those days for reservations. Guessing they’ll release those days on Aug 25 Magic Key day. Thank you!!!!!
So I am planning a trip on August 25th and 26th. I am getting a magic key when I can, however I’m worried those days will be hard to get reservations for once the keys are out there. If I now buy 2 day tickets and made a reservation for the 25th and 26th would I be able to upgrade those on the the 26th to a magic key?
Is it possible to purchase a ticket and make reservations for a Saturday in October and then go to the park and upgrade it to the Believe Key that Saturday in October? The Believe Key doesn’t have any Saturdays in October available, and I don’t think I want to get the Dream Key this year because I don’t have the time and kind of want to save money for some trips. I would like to not have to buy a Dream Key just because I have plans to go on a Saturday in October.
If you want to upgrade a multi-day ticket and you wait for the last day, you won’t get the pass discount on food and merchandise for anything purchased before the last day, correct? Do you have the option to upgrade the first day of your multi-day trip? You’d lose your reservation for the subsequent days, but if reservations are open, couldn’t you just turn around and reserve those days right when you got your Magic Key?
question, if I wait until the end of my purchased tickets day to upgrade to the Annual pass don’t I lose the higher discounts and free parking for all the days before except the day of? Example If I go Mon, Tues, and Weds then Thursday update to the Highest Annual pass how would the parking I paid for get refunded for mon,Tues and Wed. Also the discount on meals for mon, tues and Wed?
If I have 2 day park hopper’s and 4 day park hopper’s both linked to my Disneyland account for future use; can I use both toward a magic key? My plan is to use my 2 day passes October 1 and 2nd which are blocked for the key I plan on buying so according to this article I would be able to upgrade on October 2 and use my two day and hopefully my 4 day passes for a magic key.
That was really helpful, but I’m not clear on that last option you gave. We have reservations for 5 days in December. I do not want a December renewal date. I understand if I buy a key in August (and go into the park so I can upgrade) I could lose those reservations. If I go to a ticket booth and reserve one day in August in theory couldn’t that be my 6th day? So, I’m thinking I could buy a single day ticket, go in to the park, they go to the ticket booth and upgrade. I wouldn’t loose my December dates and could apply the cost of that ticket to my Key. Then I would have an August renewal. Would that work?
Love these “How To articles”! And thanks for waiting and getting all the correct information instead of just guessing and putting bad info out there. It goes a long way to build trust with the community. I am more likely to wait for David’s vetted and correct info than whoever can spit it out the fastest!
Thanks for the always informative info! OK, here’s my question. We did purchase some multi-day tickets from Costco at a slight discount, but have not yet made reservations to go along with those tickets. Do you think we can still go ahead and upgrade those, and also just upgrade without making a reservation?
That’s great about letting someone else use the ticket towards an magic key pass! I moved my 2 remaining reservations up for the SoCal 3 day tickets. I’m not concerned about limit passes. My big concern now is that I plan to get the Dream key so I can go at Thanksgiving and near Christmas/ New Year (no blackouts), but if I can’t guarantee a reservation then it doesn’t make sense. 🤔
