How Did The Naya Rivera Conspiracy Turn Out?

Naya Rivera, a popular American actress and singer, was found dead in California after an accidental drowning while boating with her 4-year-old son, Josey. The incident occurred on July 8, 2020, when Rivera failed to return from a boating excursion on Lake Piru near her home. The cause of death was determined to be accidental drowning by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. Rivera had been missing for seven years, following her co-star Cory Monteith’s death in a Vancouver hotel room due to an overdose of heroin.

The autopsy report released on Friday revealed that Rivera raised her arm and called for help as she drowned while boating with her son. The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the cause of death to be accidental drowning, which is exactly seven years after her co-star, Cory Monteith, was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room of an overdose of heroin. Rivera’s family is settling a wrongful death lawsuit over her accidental drowning in a lake in Southern California.

The discovery came five days after Rivera’s son was found alone on a boat. The boy told investigators his mother helped him drown. Rivera’s family is settling a wrongful death lawsuit over her accidental drowning, and officials in California have confirmed that Rivera died of accidental drowning after a post-mortem examination.

  • This summer I went boating on a lake with my sister and her two children. The attendant made sure we all had our life vests on, but when we were out of her sight my sister took her vest off and said “I’m not wearing this dumb vest, I can swim.” and she took it off while I kept telling her to just wear it even though we are both good swimmers. WEAR YOUR SWIM VESTS GUYS. It can literally save your life!

  • Sloan I’m a retired Louisville metro homicide detective. It’s not unusual for someone to drown and then days later, find floating at the top of the water. See without being graphic, after a body is submerged in water, the body will start filling up w gases and that will bring a body back up to the surface, so I’m not surprised that they didn’t find her the first few days Bc she probably was submerged and then as time went by, emerged to the top from the gases. Still very sad and heartbreaking.

  • So, when a person is drowning theres a stage were you start panicking and breathe even if you’re underwater, if they found foam or water in her lungs that means that she breathed/yelled/opened her mouth and thats how they know that, this is what I learned in forensic medicine Tbh I think that we should just let her rest and let her family grieve Edit: as people in the comments have already stated, it is totally possible for a body to be at the bottom and turn up floating later because of the natural decomposition process when bacteria start releasing gas from body cavities. I love Sloan but I think that this is such a sensitive topic, that is still hurting her family and this wasn’t the appropriate way to approach it

  • I don’t understand how people describe her behavior in the parking lot as strange? Her looking back looks like her keeping an eye on her son that’s tagging behind her. The parking could be simply not caring how she parked or even strategically parking out of the lines to prevent other cars from parking next to her and dinging her car. 🤷🏽‍♀️

  • I don’t want this to come off rude or anything, but this is a bit disappointing. All of the speculation is just gonna cause more people to harass them again. 🙁 they weren’t holding hands in the picture. It looks like it because of the angle. And people mourn differently. It’s not weird having her move in if it results in comforting little Josey. Losing his mother like that is incomprehensible. The only thing we should be concerned about is how he’s doing, to be honest. 🥺

  • Getting together with your sister’s man after she passed is just so disrespectful. Grief is grief. But as adults, you have to keep the child’s best interest in mind. It’s confusing, weird, and even disrespectful once they grow up and realize that their dad and aunt couldn’t keep it in their pants… Trust me, I can definitely see it happening, but making significant changes due to those emotions is irresponsible! At the end of the day, that child will probably suffer more than both of them, fighting with himself to keep those memories of him mom engraved. Wondering why his mom had to pass at such a young age… If there was no child in the picture, they can do what they want. Messy, but they can do it. But a baby involved? KEEP HIS BEST INTERESTS AT HEART, AND ONLY HIS. They’re being selfish.

  • Usually I love your articles, Sloan, but with this one I’m very unsatisfied. Not everything has to be a ‘mysterious death’ or a conspiracy theory. 1. Her body floating on the surface days after she died is cohesive with her drowning. Like many others in the comments explained: gases will form in the stomach and other body cavities due to decomposition, which leads to the body’s resurfacing. It was a cold lake so the decomposition took a while. 2. A lot can be said after an autopsy. Damaged vocal cords or a foamy substance in the lungs can be found when someone spoke/shouted while drowning. But I read that her son Josey stated that she called for help. 3. I don’t really see a problem with Ryan and Nikayla dating. Ryan was Naya’s EX husband. While it still can be frowned upon, they were not together anymore and so Ryan was as free to date anyone he wants as Naya was before her passing. Also it’s not uncommon to grow close while helping each other through a tough time. They both lost a beloved person and maybe their grief brought them together. Maybe there was something between them beforehand. We don’t know and it should be none of our business. Also I can see why they’re only seen together without Josey. He’s just a child, but the public and paparazzi won’t respect that. They probably don’t want to bug him with the public’s judgemental eyes and your article is the best example for why anyone should try to keep their children out of media. 4. There’s no such thing is a ‘curse of Glee’.

  • I think you missed the mark on a few points. Drowned people sink and then float after a few days. Water in the lungs can indicate struggle/shouting during drowning. I disagree that it’s wrong for her sister and ex to be together. It seems that it would be good for her child to have his father and aunt. Let people who have lost someone find happiness where they can. They were divorced, anyway, so he’s a free man and her sister is an adult.

  • I’m so glad you did this article! I adored Naya and her character on Glee literally saved my life. She helped me realise I was gay and genuinely helped me accept myself, the scene of her coming out to her Abuela (even though it was negative) gave me inspiration to come out to my parents and I’ll forever be grateful for what she did for me. She was an angel on earth and will forever be an angel.

  • I hate when people hyper focus on the families of victims, judging their every action and attacking them if they don’t grieve the way their ‘supposed’ to. This needs to stop. And $5000 a month for a house in LA (I think) is hardly the ‘high life’ . Honestly I’m kinda disappointed about this take Sloan. This is unfair speculation about people who are going through so much pain

  • I remember when the picture of them “holding hands came out” I blew a gasket..but someone took the time to blow up the picture and investigate it and It wasn’t them holding hands just the angle .. Also It was two little HS GIRLS chasing them down taking multiple pictures waiting for the right angle to sell to TMZ

  • This is still one of my favorite songs, but these lyrics are chilling: If I die young, bury me in satin Lay me down on a bed of roses Sink me in a river, at dawn Send me away with the words of a love song The sharp knife of a short life Well, I’ve had just enough time Lord, make me a rainbow I’ll shine down on my mother She’ll know I’m safe with you when she stands under my colors Oh… and, life ain’t what you think it ought to be Ain’t even gray but she buries her baby A penny for my thoughts, oh no I’ll sell ’em for a dollar They’re worth so much more After I’m a goner And maybe then you’ll hear The words I’ve been singing Funny when you’re dead how people start listening

  • People grieve in ways we don’t expect or maybe even “like.” I feel so bad for them, their grieving processes getting picked apart by the public like that. . . we have no idea what they’re going through and we don’t get to judge what they do during this time. Naya would only want them to do what’s best for them. I love you Sloan but this particular speculation is really hurtful

  • This is the first article from Sloan that I don’t agree with and found distasteful to be honest. It wasn’t well researched either, there are plenty of scientific explanations for why bodies of victims of drowning are found floating, part of it has to do with the natural release of gas from the body causing it to rise to the surface and search and recovery teams actually expect this to happen, there’s no conspiracy. That’s why serial killers will throw their victims in the water with concrete or heavy items to prevent the natural occurrence of the body floating to the surface from happening. Trauma bonding is also a thing that happens when people share grief over someone they were close too and end up comforting each other, while some may find it inappropriate, again it’s something that happens. Back in the day, soldiers would ask their brothers or men they trusted to be there for their wives if they didn’t return home. Grief leads people to do things they normally wouldn’t and to judge two people that lost their sister and the mother of their child in such a tragic manner is weird. Humans seek out comfort when they’re hurting, just because you wouldn’t do it, doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with it. The cast of glee have also asked people not to bring up the “glee curse” as they find it tacky and disrespectful.

  • The father wasn’t ‘ranting’. He was talking about his sadness for his son’s loss. The sister is the closest thing to his Mum. The sister is living there because the precious life of a small child is 24 hours a day. You judge this family just for a you tube article. The Glee cast is not cursed. It is real life problems with mental health and addiction. Have some respect for her grieving family. They were not holding hands either.

  • i don’t know i think this is really insensitive to speculate about. they moved into a 3bd apartment so i wouldn’t assume they are a couple. they were family already through marriage and they are both going through trauma. i could see this causing them to bond and become closer. i am happy that josey has his aunt in his life like he wanted :).

  • My ex passed suddenly on August 13 2018 at the age of 33. I met him unexpectedly but we both fell hard quickly I could speak to him for hours on end and not get tired. For months we’d been on the phone 10 hours a day and never missed a day without speaking to each other. I was texting him one day and he said he hadn’t been feeling well so he went to nap. He never woke up. I was at work when I found out, I had nobody to reach out to or talk to. I was devastated. One of his best friends reached out via Facebook and we became close very fast. Well he eventually started to catch feelings for me but I was in a bad spot and still mourning and I knew he wasn’t in love he was just doing what I was clinging to the one person who was there for support. So please don’t judge how people grieve.

  • This is… not it. Grief brings people together in weird ways. Something similar has happened with members of my own family. I do not think Ryan and Nickayla are together, and we shouldn’t be speculating about it regardless. Also this “Glee Curse” nonsense is in SUCH poor taste. These are peoples’ lives.

  • Although it looks weird, their relationship makes total sense. They both understood each other’s grief, they’re – I’m sure – grieving very heavily at that, and a huge factor is that they feel closer to Naya when they’re with each other. Think of it in context that while exe’s grieve a relationship, some of them want to get close to the new girlfriend in order to feel close to their ex partner. Except, this is death that they’re helping each other cope with. They both care for and are caring for her child. I actually think this is a healthy bonding experience between two people who just lost someone they love and I’m sure Naya, like a lot of us, would find some solace to know her child is being cared for by two of the closest people in her life. Just my take 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • This always seemed strange to me…. It would make sense if Naya’s mother went to move in with her grandson and his dad if they had no one else, but not her 25 year old model sister… If Naya passed a few years ago and Ryan and her sister got close over time, fell in love, and got together, I think everyone would be happy for them. But it felt like they moved in together before Naya’s body was even cold… smh RIP Naya ❤️

  • It’s been over a year since she passed away, this article is inappropriate. You cannot judge someone for how they grieve, and the family thought it best that Josey have someone familiar and close to him move in during the most challenging months of his early life. There’s nothing ‘shady’ about an aunt and the father bonding to help raise Josey. And basic biology would tell you how common it is for drowned victims to resurface days later due to the gasses in the body. Take this article down, and let her family, friends, and us fans grieve in peace.

  • Couple things. Naya was born 15 minutes away from Piru. It was reported going out on the lake was not unusual for her. She grew up in the area and was familiar with it. They didn’t want a bunch of fans running around looking because those banks are covered in rattlesnakes. Notice you don’t see one person on shore around the lake even the day she is there. It was also reported they were familiar with Naya at the boat rental. I’m in Ventura County, this was through our news KEYT. It was a tragic accident. She mis judged the winds. Between the boat drifting and getting tangled underwater I’m just grateful her son was safe. Let her and her family rest in peace.

  • I know it seems “suspicious” how and where she was found, but you need to remember the reason they didn’t let divers go in was because of the density of the lake and because of all of the fallen trees and other things, just because she was found floating at the top of the water doesn’t mean anything, just like u said currents and winds are so strong, the current very well could have pulled her under, where she got caught on somthing until she was eventually unstuck, allowing her to float to the surface (she was found with a lot of bruising as well) the fact that they focused their search on a totally different end of the lake was why she was oberlooked for as long as she was. And the part about her calling for help was most likely cause she had water in her lungs before she was dead, meaning she was trying to yell for help as she was sucking in water. I’m just thankful she was able to be found and laid to rest, a lot of drowning victims in situations like these are never found so I’m at least thankful her family and friends got thag closure instead of having to deal with the torture of never knowing what happened to her.

  • Sloan, I really like you and I think you’re a good person but I’m very disappointed with some of the things you say in this article. It’s very common for people who have lost a loved one to get close and even in a romantic relationship. I don’t think it’s nobody’s business to judge them, it’s their private life. Also, I found that comment about Naya’s spirit coming back to hunt her sister EXTREMELY distasteful and disrespectful. Please do better

  • Okay so… if you pass away and your child goes to live with their father who happens to be single. Instead of him dating, looking for love, bringing people around your child that are complete strangers, your sister comes into the picture to accompany the father of your child. Who would you trust any more than your very own sister to be the motherly-like figure in your child’s life? I doubt there was anything going on between them prior to Naya’s passing. They most likely bonded while grieving her death and taking care of that baby boy. I mean, am i wrong? 🤷🏽‍♀️

  • I feel like the sister, and therefore the aunt, blood related, is the absolute best fit as a partner for the little boy’s father. You see, BOTH people in this dynamic are HEAVILY emotionally invested in this sweet child who is now without a mother. All the best to the 3 of them. I wish them a beautiful, happy future ❤️

  • They say that when you’re about to die.. in the time leading up to your death you kind of know. Maybe that explains her tweet days before her death. Not saying she wrote it because she knew, but how she was feeling could have been due to her “time” coming. But i guess this is a more spiritual belief and obviously not factual.

  • Sloan, I love you, but this take is a bit bizarre….. There is nothing wrong with family wanting a kid to have a mother figure, which is the reason Naya’s sister stuck around, and it was addressed long time ago. I don’t think they are holding hands in the photo, and it’s just an angle, plus the photo is poor quality. Besides that, people are grieving in different ways, and all three of them lost a very important person in their life. It’s natural for them to bond over something so tragic. The conspiracy theories are wild and at times insensitive. Somehow every tragedy related to a celebrity becomes a ground for people to speculate and try to read between the lines of internet presence, and it’s just….wrong. It’s like accidents cannot happen to famous people, or something. Please don’t jump to conclusions and don’t judge people when all you know is bare minimum. Rest in power, Naya ♥️

  • How is this a slight? They bonded over their grief and she’s the best possible person for the kid. Imagine how much better it is for the child to have his aunt there than a new woman. They all just went through an immense loss, let them have some happiness. This doesn’t mean they’re not all grieving the loss.

  • I actually think it’s very common to marry or get close to someone who knew the person you lost. I’ve seen it happen many times with older relatives and other older people around my town. When you lose someone and are grieving, it feels like no one can understand the pain you’re going through, and that pain eats you up inside. Just finding someone who can understand your pain, especially if they also knew the person, really helps. It’s like you have a mutual understanding of what you feel, and it can really bond people. For instance, I became very close friends with my cousin after my uncle died. We never really interacted before, but we both really loved him, and being able to remember him with her really helped me move on from my grief and remember my uncle with happy memories, and we’re still close and have this bond years later. I knew a man who lost his wife to cancer and he remarried a woman who lost her husband to cancer. People bond over shared experiences, and the more intense the experience, even if it’s incredibly negative like grief, the deeper that bond can go. I don’t think this is a bad thing at all, I’m happy that they can help each other with their grief and make sure the son remembers Naya.

  • When my step dad killed himself my mom and his best friend since childhood (so best friends for 30+ years) started dating a week after my step dad died. They dated for a year and a half. When two people are both extremely close to someone who has died and are grieving it’s really common for it to cause the two people to develop romantic feelings about each other.

  • I had a dream a couple of days before Naya drowned. In that dream was Cory Monteith and Mark Salling. They were their characters from Glee (I used to watch Glee with my daughter). I was with them at school. Then we went to a beach and the atmosphere turned dark. Naya was standing near the water. Then I woke up, didn’t really thought much of it until I read what had happened. I’m also from Finland and piru means the devil in finnish. I’m not religious but the dream was just so strange.

  • Why is it weird that the sister and ex-husband live together? She’s his Aunt. I see this as her helping out, not a couple. That’s why they moved in together. This happens all the time in these instances. It’s kinda weird they were holding hands though, but whatever. Perhaps it was support? I don’t see how her moving in with him to look over her nephew as a problem or her as “pursuing her sisters ex husband”. The only fishy picture is the holding hands in target. Moving in together after a few weeks after they’re both mourning as one lost their sister and the other lost their ex wife, but that doesn’t mean they’re together. Little confused why thats presumed, and it’s a little disrespectful to make such accusations.

  • Honestly a couple friends from my hometown got together. This guy’s girlfriend passed away and her best friend ended up dating him, helping raise the daughter he had with the ex who had passed. They since have gotten married with 2 more kids happily. Not as weird as you’d think. If I passed away and one of my best friends and boyfriend ended up bonding during my grief, I’d be happy. The two people I love the most and trust in life, my memory would never be forgotten for a day ♥️

  • It’s common for siblings to have relationships with a dead sis / bro’s, former spouse/partner . Facts are, people don’t get any ” deader ” 🤔 once they die . The grieving process is like being reborn . Having someone to share that grief with is very powerful . It’s not ” disrespectful ” for Naya’s sister to potentially, have a romantic relationship with Ryan . I’m shocked, that people would be so judgmental . The dead are dead . The living go on the best they can .

  • Its also very disrespectful to assume things about nayas sister. Her sister is the closest thing to her besides their mom. When I was a kid, my mom got very sick. My aunt (her sister) stepped up while my mom was sick in the hospital and while she recovered. Its the right thing to do. Ive helped raise my nephew and id do it again. Its family doing what family should do. Help eachother. Besides, that saying “it takes a village to raise a child,” is very true. This article shows literally a few seconds of their lives. A few pics as well as his article and her post on rumors about them.

  • She could have been at the bottom but the gases from decomp will cause the body to rise and float to the top so finding her floating is actually not that suspicious or unlikely. And I believe the son told police she was yelling for help then she disappeared… Idk. I think it was just a tragic accident from an inexperienced boater/swimmer in that area. Tragic for sure. But accident. IMO. The sister relationship with the father tho is just a bit odd. Love your website 😍

  • I’m from Ventura county and its known that u don’t swim in lake Piru. The wind can also change pretty quickly, there can be no breeze all day but at a certain point a pretty strong afternoon wind starts blowing. And in that little valley i can see how it gets pretty strong. This was such a sad story when we found out about it, any lake can be so scary. be careful everyone and make sure conditions are always safe before you do anything!

  • This happens more often than you would think. A lot of the time a grieving sister/best friend does end up with their lost ones spouse/ex partner, especially if children are involved. Sometimes, that just what makes sense to them and quite often it doesn’t last forever. It just turns out to have been apart of their grieving process.

  • Naya is the most beautiful, talented angel. She died as a hero. It’s the weirdest thing but I feel strong connection with her and her passing broke my heart I still cry when I see or hear her. I’m perusal glee just for her. This is so messed up but I hope that wherever she is now, she’s happy and in peace. She’s guardian angel. And heaven just simply couldn’t wait for her. 💔

  • She died a full fledged HERO!! Not a fan until now, but what her son has/will go threw in life will be and has been very traumatic. We all know that child will never be the same but he knows his momma died saving him not trying to harm him. That’s what he will remember! So that’s the only great thing about this. So very sad!! My condolences to everyone around her!!! R.I.P. Naya!!!!!❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️

  • Yeah I’m feeling really off about this. I don’t think it’s anyone’s place to judge their situation and I’m honestly surprised to hear you talk like this about a grieving family. I don’t feel good about it at all. This is not even confirmed that anything is going on, honestly this is what I call crossing a line. Not a personal relationship which is straight up not our business. And acting like they need to respond to what strangers think their loved one would feel, is really bizarre to me.

  • Listen to her sister and have compassion and not judge. We don’t know how difficult it was on them. Plus, we don’t know her relationship with her sister. Maybe it’s something she would be ok with. Her child raised by her sister and his father. I would be happy to know that God forbid anything ever happened.

  • I’m sorry but this article just rubbed me the wrong way. Those things are not as “mysterious ” as they seem, it takes very minimal research to find out how drowning victims decompose. Naya’s death was tragic enough, without making a conspiracy out of it. It’s also none of our business what the relationship between her sister and her ex is, grief can bring people together and I won’t judge them for that. I’m sure Naya loved them and would only want the best for them.

  • Sloan, I’m unsure if i want to stay subscribed after this. You are usually so upstanding and moral in your research, but this article was just judge mental. You claim to love Naya yourself, seem to think you know what’s best for her devastated and grieving family despite having nothing to do with the situation. It is common for family members to become closer like this after death, it is not some weird perverted thing—and it is also None of Our Business. Leave them alone. In this article you began to resemble the viscous media you usually stand against. Please do better.

  • after my dad died his brother and my mom grew really close and are dating 3 years later. it doesn’t bother me one bit, theyve known each other for nearly their entire lives and helped each other through a tough time. my mom spent so many years of her life taking care of my dad when he was sick and im just glad that she has someone to do the same for her now.

  • This is so disrespectful, naya and ryan were divorced for years before her passing, also, I dont think they are dating as you can clearly see they are not holding hands but if they are is their business and I cannot image the pain this family is still suffering who are we to judge, it’s not our business

  • Trauma brings people together. My mom got married young and was very in love and he drowned in the grand river two and a half years later. Then my mom and my dad which was her husband’s best friend ended up living together less than a month later and have been ever since, it has now been 41 years. Grief can really make you develop a strong bond with someone.

  • Plenty of people have cleared up why Naya was found when she was, and how; and overall, I think it’s clear it was a straightforward accident. The parking lot was pretty much empty so I don’t think it’s weird she would park the way she did- she may have been distracted by Josey too. As for looking back, looks like she was checking to make sure he was catching up and she could have been walking ahead out of excitement- getting Josey hyped up i.e. ‘come on, let’s get the boat!’ I don’t think there’s anything mysterious about the situation. She just made a bad judgement call not putting on her vest and going into the water. As for Ryan and Nickayla, again nothing strange to me. It sounds like they’re all really close and as far as I know, Ryan was really close friends with Naya years before they got together, so he most likely knew the family for just as long. Speculating here but after Naya’s death, there would have been a shift in the family dynamic for Josey- if he was living with Ryan, he would have noticed a change in the frequency of seeing the Riveras (though of course he would still see them, just not as much), and as Ryan voiced in the article, said he wanted Nickayla to live with them. He clearly missed being around that side of the family, and evidently was especially close with Nickayla. They had the means to do this, so of course they would if it made things easier for Josey. Plus, I think it’s really telling that the house is rented. I think collectively they could afford to buy somewhere, which I assume would be preferable regarding privacy; but since it’s rented says to me it’s a temporary arrangement, and they don’t know for how long for.

  • Everyone grieves differently. They were divorced. And Naya had moved on. Grief does funny things to people and sometimes people trauma bond, which would make sense. All that matters is this little boy, and having his aunt around may actually be the best thing for him. He has no mom and someone needs to fill that role for the little boy. Do I think the ex husband is kind of gross? Always have. But it’s up to those two to make the best decisions for the child.

  • I’m a bit disappointed. You’re usually very careful not to disrespect the person who’s story you’re covering. But this time I felt super uncomfortable perusal as you more or less directly are calling our grieving people for “betrayal”. Grief has a way of turning people’s lives upside down, and sometimes comfort and peace of mind comes from the most unexpected places. In this case, her sister and her ex-husband. It’s not like they ever wanted what happened to Naya. They’re just people and I feel super sorry to them for even perusal this article.

  • Honestly, people grieve in really weird ways sometimes… I can see the sister and the ex/baby daddy forming a bone over their shared loss. Her death really seems like it was due to the lack of safety warnings, the lack of safety precautions such as a life vest, and lack of using better judgment. Very sad.

  • I really don’t think they’re even holding hands. They’re very open and seems like one is just enough in front. It takes a village, I would also be roomies with family if we were experiencing such an untimely, close death, especially when there’s a child involved. I feel like he didn’t address the rumors explicitly bc maybe he does have some grief driven feelings for the sister, but nothing romantic is happening. And even if they were holding hands, we’re humans. I’d understand if they were kissing or caked up in a corner. But it seems like she’s just doing what she can to support her nephew and his father.

  • i love you sloan (and i’m saying this out of love), but Nic and Ryan are not, and never have been romantically together. Nic and Ryan moved in with each other to raise Josey, nothing more nothing less. It’s extremely disrespectful to speculate on their relationship like this when there’s practically no news about it. Even the picture you showed was blurry and they clearly weren’t holding hands, just one two separate steps on the escalator. Additionally, the conspiracy about Naya being found floating and her autopsy showing her screaming for help were poorly researched. The questions you asked could be easily found using google search. I think that your articles are usually well done, but I don’t know if you’re running out of content to make or something of that nature, but this whole article lacked the nuance and research that i know you’re capable of doing. When covering a topic as heartbreaking as this, please proceed with more care in the future.

  • We took my 2 yr old to the beach and as we were laying our blanket out he dashed off towards the water. I barely had time to think before I launched myself into that water to grab him. It was simply my instincts kicking in. I can’t imagine the fear that poor woman felt before her death but I hope the fact that she saved her son brought her even just a moment of relief. R.I.P. Naya ❤️

  • I had a friend growing up whose father drowned in a river. His boat started floating away from the shore and he swam after it but drowned as he wasn’t a good swimmer. I sat with her at the park because she couldn’t be in the house with all the family and her mother(who witnessed him drown). 😔. Sloan, I enjoy the variety of stories you cover and Thankyou for the quality content.

  • When this story broke, it made me so sad for Josey. But his mom did what all us moms would do…..she protected her baby at all costs!! Poor little boy all alone in the boat, asleep. He probably cried himself to sleep. I have no hard feelings if Naya’s sister is in a living situation with the child’s father. Grieving sucks so bad!! And if this helps the little boy feel just a little bit closer to his mom than that’s ok, imo. I don’t judge and wish the 3 of them the best. Now if it gets toxic then they need to adjust the living situation. They all need each other to get through this the easiest way they can. I feel so sorry that they r being judged @ a time of such sadness for them. RIP: NAYA💓💞🌼🌸🌺RIVERA💖💜💞🌲💓💝

  • the undercurrent and the regular current. the boat was also drifting. someone very close to me was caught in an undercurrent and they described it as “someone physically yanking you down” and it was hard to get out. she was probably getting tugged down and saving her son at the same time. it’s so sad and my heart and prayers are with the son and her family.

  • I loved her so much on Glee. She was so beautiful. I didn’t know she had a son until few years before she passed. Her passing made me upset, she was still so young and talented. I feel sorry for her son. Poor little baby lost his mum at such a young age. I hope her family gets through it and honestly, i don’t see any problem with her younger sister being with her ex. I mean, they are family and i’m sure her spirit will be happy since it’s her own sister looking after her son with the father. I’d be happy if it’s my siblings looking after my kids rather than strangers. Cos i love my siblings and they love my kids too. Just be more positive and let her soul rest in peace. She’s in a better place. ❤

  • THANK U I KNOW DANG WELL IT WAS SUS WHEN HE SAID THAT HER SISTER WAS MOVING IN TO HELP HIM RAISE THE SON UMMMMMM HELLO HOW ABOUT HAVE ONE OF THE GRANDPARENTS MOVE IN AND ON TOP OF THAT HE SUED THE COMPANY A FEW MONTHS LATER AND HOW FUNNY IS THAT HE SUED THE COMPANY AROUND THE TIME HER SISTER WAS MOVING IN????? not saying they’re doing anything buuut it is sorta suspicious imo

  • ??? They don’t owe anyone an explanation on their life. It’s none of my business. There has been a death and it’s not our place to judge grieving people. Judge when there are actions taken that so signify that. I don’t think it’s appropriate OR respectful for Naya to make this gossip view either!! She literally died. This article shouldn’t have ended in gossip. So disrespectful.

  • Sl4on, I think it’s a bit irresponsible spreading the narrative that the sister is trying to get with Ryan. Hear me out: I completely understand how it looks but if something tragic happened to me, I’d want my sister to help care for my child… in whatever form that takes. The little boy is grieving and his aunt is the closest woman to his mom that he has. He is probably benefitting from having that energy in his house caring for him alongside his father. Also.. the “hand holding” photo is taken from a very strange angle and I’m not altogether sure that their hands are intertwined. That being said, I love and support your content!

  • My best friend was in a car accident with her boyfriend and sister. Her sister did not make it. My best friend and her boyfriend broke up shortly after the accident. The guy my best friends sister was seeing at the time got a tattoo and together they all mourned the death of her sister who had a small child. My best friend was left with the feeling of helping raise the child with her mother. Through this time the boyfriend of the sister and my best friend became close and are now married. The little girl calls my friends husband “dad” and recently got a matching tattoo of the one her “dad” got when her mom died. My best friend never spoke to me about her mourning. I saw the comfort she found in bonding with her sister’s ex. Talking about her sister and taking the child places. Even though her sister was dating other people and it wasn’t her “boyfriend”, people thought it was weird. It caused a strain on them when they did date. I do think my bf struggled with it…like wondering if her sister would want it and that was noticeable, but they always came back together. It was almost like my best friend and the sisters EX found comfort in mourning together, but felt like they were doing something wrong. They are happily married now as I may have already said and that little girl does not call my bf mom, but does call him dad. He was there for her and the child always. People have even wondered if maybe that was the dad. I don’t know! I often wonder if that was something they knew and did not share.

  • I don’t usually comment on articles but this is very disrespectful to Naya and her family, we have no idea of what they are going through and how they are all coping with the loss of Naya, and to speculate and gossip about the doings of her grieving family when we have no confirmation of the situation is just distasteful to me

  • People grieve differently. I can’t judge the sister and ex husband for finding comfort within each other. I’m just glad that her son is still surrounded by her family. As long as he’s thriving, healthy and happy, that’s all that really matters. He lost his mother and if his aunt wants to step in and raise him, that’s more than okay. Everything else about the sister and ex husbands relationship is atm purely speculation. Their relationship can really just be platonic. We don’t know for sure what’s going on.

  • I have a different view on the sister situation. …if something happened to me & i had a sister, I’d want her to step up for my kids. It probably gives the baby comfort…especially where she looks like his mom. Even if it means that my sister started a relationship with my husband after…as long as it was bc it was helpful for my kids to heal . Poor baby is most likely traumatized. If he needs his aunt & dad to play house, to help…i see no harm. They both clearly love him. & he probably isn’t shown often bc the public & paparazzi don’t give af about privacy..whether it’s for a child or not.

  • I don’t know why but I always thought this happened years and years and years ago not in 2020 why do I have memories of people talking about it way before 2020 she was a beautiful soul I hope she’s loving seeing her baby grow up even though she’s not able to physically be with him we miss you girl your talent will not be forgotten ❤

  • Am I crazy to not see the issue with the sister getting with Naya’s ex husband ?? Like they’re both mourning a sister and a son’s mother, Nickayla tried to help with her nephew and her and Ryan obviously got closer ! Moreover Ryan was already divorced before she passed ! I don’t see any betrayal there, and I feel like that even makes sense ! Naya is obviously what links them together, and after such a sudden loss it should be NOBODY’S BUSINESS how they’re coping for them and the little Josey ! Sounds just like a lot of assumptions and judgements here.

  • I feel so bad for her little boy I can’t imagine the terror and confusion he must have been feeling 💔 I remember being that age and I was extremely attached to my mom so much to the point that she couldn’t put me in pre K cuz I had terrible separation anxiety All the way thru from kindergarten to like 2nd grade It’s terrible and so sad My mom passed when I was 21 I’m now 44 and I’m getting anxiety just perusal this

  • always thought her death was sad and odd. The parking lot with only few cars and this vast lake is a creepy scene. Its also very risky to go on a boat alone with your toddler without life jackets. I wonder if she was having mental health problems. People are saying that the relationship between the sister and ex husband is not weird but no its weird

  • If I died in a tragic accident, I’d hope that my sister would be there for my son and husband. If it were the other way around, I’d be there to help my brother in law. I really don’t think she’s trying to make a move on her ex brother in law. Imagine grieving in the spotlight like that. You only have so many people you can turn to. 💔

  • I kind of get where Ryan and Mikayla are coming from, not them being in a relationship, but from the point of wanting to help each other raise Josey. Both of my parents died by the time I was 13, and my aunt stepped in to raise me and my sister. She was in my life as a mother figure from that time until she passed away this august from cancer. She was a piece of my mother and that gave me so much comfort. Now that I’m a parent who understands what it’s like for a child to loose one or both parents, I would never want my husband to have to raise our child alone.

  • hmm this isn’t like Jamie and Britney Spears. its not odd for her to move in with him to help raise her nephew I want to point out that in the target picture you can clearly tell they are not holding hands so for you to spread falls information is disappointing I also want to say that if they laugh or feel some sort of happiness they shouldn’t be condemned for it. what they went through is such a sad thing to go to so if they are finding happiness and support with each other good for them. I also want to point out that its really common for cases like this where a sister falls for the ex husband of her dead sister. and in my opinion it must have something to do with grief and having a mutual thing to grief on that maybe someone else wouldn’t be as understanding or patient

  • Drowning victims do sink at first. It takes a few days for the bodies to float back to the surface. Bodies sink because the lungs fill with water which helps weigh down the body. The bacteria in our guts continue to feed off of sugars and proteins that are still left in the soft tissue, as they do, they release gasses such as methane, carbon dioxide and ammonia which fill the cavities in the body and cause it to rise. It takes a few days because there needs to be enough gas built up to carry the weight of the body. This is also why all recovered drowned bodies are bloated. The bloating is the built up gas.

  • Love you and your articles SL04N, but I’m not so sure about this one. I don’t think we can judge how anyone mourns a loss like this. I’m sure her sister and her ex are both reminded of Naya when they are near each other, and it seems like Josey adores his aunt. I think whatever is best for the child is totally OK

  • I broke down in the middle of this article, I’m a nayaholic myself and I’m thankful that I’m a film major, because idk where I’d be if it wasn’t for naya and my other idols, but when her disappearance was announced I remember panicking so much bc at this point Santana was already my first favorite character from (I’m perusal glee for the 3rd time now for her and Cory) and I was on the final season and when I heard she passed it was rlly hard for me to accept it. I was rlly looking forward to working with her someday but sadly I don’t have that chance anymore. She was one of the sweetest unproblematic stars I’ve always looked up to. RIP Naya, I miss u sm and ily❤️❤️

  • You seem to have gotten confused about ”top/bottom” in relation to the position of the body being found. When they said bottom they meant that the body was at the bottom of the lake ie under the water. they found the body at the top, meaning the body rose to the top of the water as a result of gas in the body and was Visible to the searchers on the surface..

  • Absolutely and completely have all the sympathy for naya and her family, which is also why, if these two are dating, i really really reaally do not care. If this happened with my ex and my younger sibling after i died, id be so happy they found someone who they love and who helps them through this. I just really cannot have an issue with this. Grief does crazy things to you, and it can do so much good for the grieving process to have someone you feel truely gets what your going though. If they’d been dating while Naya was alive, or especially if they were dating when she died, it’d be sus to me, but the two were divorced long before and these two /may/ be dating now, some time after her passing.

  • I think the “Glee Curse” is in reference to the fact that she’s the third cast member who passed away. The guy who played Finn. The guy who played Puck. And now her. I absolutely love Glee and was devastated by their deaths. Just thinking of her little boy on that boat alone… Heartbreaking 🥺. Continued prayers for her and her family 🙏🏾❤🙏🏾

  • I can see how people might see this as being weird. It very much could be. But I do feel like there’s a chance it might now be what it looks like. My twin sister died a year ago. My sisters youngest baby daddy (my niece is now almost 2) lives at my moms house. He lives with my nephew who is 10 also. He’s basically a father to him too. He’s also a huge help with my son. If he wanted to move in together to take care of 3 kids, I definitely would.

  • I wished that she came with a friend with her son and herself. This tragedy broke me. I have watched this before but never got to comment. Rest In Peace Naya Rivera. I feel sorry for her son and. her parents. I sometimes wish it was a dream. The story of the man rescuing his daughter does echo Naya’s tragedy. I wish that they put out a warning that the lake is dangerous. It’s heartbreaking that her father. 🙁 I think they should make a rule that you’d need 4-5 people on that boat. Not 1 or 2 people as well as that warning sign. This way if anyone have an accident, everyone can help out. I had no idea that Naya’s ex was dating Naya’s sister. I think that they were together on the down low while she was alive.

  • I felt a strong connection to this whole situation when it happened, probably because I have a son the same age as Josie and the thought of him being left alone on a boat or him having to live his life without his mom tore me apart. Because I have this connection with Naya through us both having a son the same age, I genuinely believe that the only thing she cares about after her death is her son being happy and taking care of. Even if this means her ex husband and sister getting uncomfortably close. After all, she wasn’t with her ex husband when she died and if what he said was true about Josie wanting his aunt to live with them, there is no other course of action you can take at that point. He lost his mother at 4 years old and if having his aunt there fills that hole in his heart even a little, I’m sure Naya would be more than accepting of it. She just wants her son to live a happy life.

  • I always enjoy perusal your articles because you give some pretty interesting insight on most stuff, but I think the entire part of Naya’s sister and Ryan was completely uncalled for. I find it very gross in general that the media is so interested in making up rumors. Whether it is true or not, literally it’s no one’s business but theirs and their families. Saying that if you were Naya’s spirit you would haunt her little sister is just … idk, too much man. I love Naya so much and her death was something that stuck with me, it’s something I still think and read a lot about. There’s no need to make it any harder than it already is, I think. Just my two cents. It goes for you as well as it goes for any and all press that has been doing and saying the same things.

  • oOo, I struggle with how I feel about this kind of scenario. I remember hearing a different (yet similar) story where a woman was murdered & her husband ended up marrying her twin sister.. At first I was shocked, and quite frankly a little disgusted… howeverrrrr, I’ve never been in that situation and I also can’t imagine going through that level of grief. Such intense pain can make people do things we would typically think is weird or wrong, or whatever other word you can come up with. I think sometimes, people going through THAT amount of sadness and pain get a pass though, honestly 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wonder if it doesn’t make the people involved feel like that’s the only way they’ll ever feel “close” to their loved one that passed and assume that’s why it even happens in the first place. Not so much bc they were just “waiting” for their chance, if that makes sense? Either way, it’s all just incredibly sad and heartbreaking 😢 the only silver lining is that her son was found alive and unharmed. She saved him but was unable to save herself, and if that’s not the true definition of a mother, then idk what is. ✨🤍😇🙏🏼

  • It’s Lake Piru (Pie-Ru). I lost a cousin there in my teens. Every summer we’d have family trips to Lake Piru, Magic Mountain and Lake Perris. Everyone knows not to swim in Piru. The trees, brush and who knows what else down there, will pull you in. Not to mention since its right there on the 5 literally inside of the mountains, the wind picks up at a moment’s notice changing the tide. Piru has claimed MANY lives. If you believe in “water memory”, this lake has it.

  • With all do respect I love Nia and hate that this happened to her but we can not blame that lake, the people that work their nor warning signs not being available. It’s Mother Nature, it’s a lake. I went camping and knowing I’m a good swimmer I thought I could swim out and rescue my float that was floating away and I had to be rescued: I started to loose my breathe I could feel the water on my chest making it hard to breathe. And all I was looking for was some way to breathe or someone to help me but by that time I was out to far, luckily their was a kid out there on a boat and threw me his paddle and pulled me in. It was really a freak accident that sadly happened to her: water is powerful and people underestimate it.

  • I honestly don’t think there’s anything suspicious about her death. I believe it was an unfortunate accident period. I will say that I wouldn’t be happy if my husband got together with my sister or best friend after I was dead. But the thing is, there is no evidence to show that her sister and ex are in a romantic relationship. Only speculation from one unreliable picture. If they are indeed in a relationship…not my couch not my problem and not my business. Anyway that’s my 2 cents. Love you Sloan ❤️

  • It is extremely normal and common for people who share grief over the same person to end up as a couple. People in this situation are going to great grief and find comfort in people who are experiencing things together. I don’t think people should be shaming Ryan and Nickayla for having formed a bond and relationship over their shared grief. Who better to become a step mom to Naya’s son than his aunt who already loves and knows him. It’s already difficult to live with his mom’s passing it would be even harder to live without a support system. If the kid asked the father to have her in his life let them decide. Everyone should just keep their opinions to themselves if they don’t know what those three are experiencing.

  • Regarding the body floating, it’s unpleasant to think about but dead bodies after a while start releasing gases. That’s why she was found floating, because initially the body would’ve sunk, but then risen to the surface after a few days because of the gas. Also the autopsy will include known details about her death as well, so the detail about her shouting for help will have come from her son.
