How Does A Wizard Go About Picking Up New Spells?

Wizards in Dungeons and Dragons 5E learn new spells through experimentation, growth, experience, and learning from other wizards, ancient tomes or inscriptions, and ancient creatures. The Spells Known column of the Bard table shows when you learn more bard spells of your choice, each of which must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

In-game learning takes time and component costs, with at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list. Wizards learn new spells as they experiment and grow in experience, and can also learn them from other wizards, ancient tomes or inscriptions, and ancient creatures. If there are spells that don’t exist in your spellbook, you can gain new spells automatically whenever you gain a level.

A wizard has four sources of new spells: Gaining a spell, copying a scroll into your spell book, or copying the pages of another wizard. At leveling up, you can choose two new spells from the wizard list and declare them in your spellbook. At 1st level, a wizard knows three cantrips and six first-level spells. Every time they level up, they learn two more spells they can cast.

To learn a new spell, you need to decipher the magical writing (see Arcane Magical Writings) and then write it down. You can learn new Grimoires by finding new Grimoires and writing the spell down (costs money). Once you learned them, you can put them into any Grimoires you wish.
