Lockpicking is a stealth skill available in Skyrim, with five levels of locks: Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Expert, and Master. It allows players to access locked rooms and containers or disarm certain traps without their corresponding keys. The Lockpicking skill tree has 11 perks, and the currency used to attempt to pick locks is lockpicks.
To find the “sweet spot”, players need to have a large quantity of lockpicks, which can be found at many vendors. Once committed to picking a lock, players enter a zoomed-in view and continue picking locks. There are no spells available to unlock chests or doors, but the Tower Stone effect allows for one Expert level lock per day.
With the Apocalypse Magic mod, there is a spell called Unlock that attempts to unlock any container or door, but it isn’t guaranteed to work. To unlock Master Lock spells, players must complete the Alteration Ritual quest. There is no lock pick spell or auto pick option, but the spell tome, staff, and scroll “Arcane Lock pick” opens locks based on alteration skills.
Detonate Lock is a spell added to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by Apocalypse – Magic of Skyrim. It uses magic to forcefully unlock a lock, making a lot of noise. Lockpicking is a skill in all Elder Scrolls games, governed by the Agility attribute in the games prior to this update.

awesome guide but the only thing i can say to this is that when you are trying to teach us the quiet sound of that, maybe not rambling on and on and on and on would be a better help. example: you said the master chest makes a different sound but you kept talking the entire time…………. other than that annoyance, awesome
Gave this a go on the pc version, either I’m doing something wrong or Bethesda saw this article and patched the locks….but no matter how slowly I move the pick (and with adjustable mouse sensitivity I can move it extremely slowly) it makes an almost constant rattle/ clicking noise through the full travel of the pick. Shame, as I don’t like the lockpicking aspect of Skyrim compared to oblivion
the sweetspots on these locks are quite predictable. Also i figured out this method quite quickly. also that the pick will wiggle into the direction where the sweetspot is. breaking on average 3 picks per master level chest and then getting it open based on where those three picks wiggled towards, it is easy to get a bead on the sweet spot. and if you pay attention to the locks you can start predicting the most likely positions they’ll be in.
I’ve noticed that apprentice and adept level locks unlock when the pick is at an angle echoing the sides of the letter A, about 15° from the vertical. If not, I divide the lock like a clock face and try 9 o’clock, 3 and straight up 12 and watch for wiggling. If that doesn’t do it I slice the pie thinner. It might cost me three or four picks on the highest level locks, but I haven’t had to use a potion or gear buff in a long time. Difficulty is set on Apprentice. I hope this is helpful. May the gods watch over your battles, friend.
Who on earth fails enough of these for it to even matter? By halfway through the game you should have enough lock picks that it wouldn’t even matter how terrible you are at it, which itself would be miraculous considering how stupidly easy lock picking is. Even leveling it is brainlessly easy, just head to the thieves guild training chests, place something on the joystick of the controller so it automatically breaks the stupendous amount of picks you should have at that point over and over, go have a cup of tea, come back to a maxed out lock picking skill. This article is superfluous.
This is pretty cool to know I had to idea, but for all the people who can’t get it to work just be gentle with the buttons and feel it out. I’ve never put any points into lockpick or used the skeleton key. I break a few locks on really hard chests but I always buy a few extra I mean there cheap and don’t weigh anything.
Tip: Do Thiefs guild until Darkness Returns quest. DO NOT COMPLETE THE QUEST. At the start of this quest you’ll have the skeleton key which is an unbreakable pick lock. Use this until you unlock the unbreakable picklock upgrade. Also during the thief’s guild you’ll get gloves which offer 25% pick lock boost.
I have a high-frequency hearing loss. I never knew it even made noise. Oh well, I’ve been picking locks without a problem anyway since it’s fairly easy to find the general area of the sweet spot and estimate the size of that spot by the level of the lock. Think I break, at most, three picks on a Master lock. Since lockpicks are so incredibly common in Skyrim, it’s no big deal.
Once I got the unbreakable lockpick perk thinking it would be as good as having the skeleton key online to find out that you still reset the position everytime you fail making it no better than just having an near endless amount of lockpicks. Next time I get the skeleton key I’m gonna hang on to it for a while, I don’t care about the nighting gale perks, but I do like the thieves guild leader armor so I will turn it in eventually.
If you complete all Thieves’ Guild missions except for the last one you will have obtained the skeleton key, which is an unbreakable lockpick. Raise your lockpick level to 100 to unlock the unbreakable skill before completing the last Thieves’ Guild mission and you’ll never have to worry about breaking a lockpick again.
i looked this up cause i ran into a ridiculously difficult adept lock in the tower of a castle ruin – maybe 1° tolerance… ended up sitting right in front of the diplay literally counting single pixels, still wasted 15+ picks! just hours ago i quite easily picked some master locks and felt confident in just using the analogue sticks very very carefully – did this happen to anyone else. i play on a ps3 and sadly this trick doesn’t really seem to work for me even if i turn down all sounds but effects, at least it’s not specific enough. i found that very very slow moving almost never gives you any sound, if you change speed it results in a click and if you move the analogue stick not only sideways but a little bit up or down that might also make a sound which usually results in several clicks all over the range after multiple tries.
Huh… right, time to work on training my ear for that. Then it’s one less skill tree to throw perk points at. I’ve already realized what a waste a lot of the weapon perks are. “Oh, I’m using a really good hammer, I’ll put points into skull crusher. Wait, now I’ve found this axe and it’s a lot better.”
There is another, faster way that takes so much less practice to use. You take the lock pick, and quickly try to unlock it ( tapping the d key on the keyboard quickly ) while also moving the lockpick, if it starts moving, try pushing it all the way, if you hear the jittering sound, just take your finger/hand off of the button. continue the process until you unlock it. Really easy and much faster than trying to listen for a clicking sound.
So im trying to unlock a master lock door and i went slow and heard the click and im like yay then i got to turn the lock, 3 quarters there and boom doesnt turn any more so then im depressed and try again and when i do try again i never hear the click again even if i do it the same speed as last time. Help plz
Ffs, there’s hardly ever any click, and when there is and I try to go back to there, the pick just ducking breaks. I’m right at the beginning of the game where they tell to open the cages, and I can’t get any of them open. I saved just before this point, and I have to keep resetting my computer so I can go back again. I’ve been through like a hundred picks, it’s fucking impossible
idfk wtf my comment went but i got mad at the damn dogs barking hence i couldn’t heae the damn click! & then trief it quiet with turtle beeches x7.1 dolby surround sound can’t hear fuck all they patcjef That shit or something cuz u move ovr it n itll click then back then forward again &still nothing! ffs it doesnt fkn work! Think I’ll steak that skeleton key!
Doesn’t work on PC with Skyrim or Skyrim Special Edition with latest patches. I’m not convinced this ever worked on PC. I remember another article where he claims the direction the lockpick breaks is the direction you will find the sweet spot. That’s bogus as fuck too. I’m thinking that this article was just random luck, or it only works on console. Also makes the claim in one of his articles that if you exit out of the lock pick UI, and re-enter, the durability of your lockpick will refresh. Also bogus. Is this just click-bait nonsense?
This is how you are supposed to pick the locks in skyrim if u didn’t know that then try moving it slower next Time I don’t have to bother anymore because I have the skeleton key its a item that you get from the theives guild quest named Blindsighted at the end you get the skeleton key from a girl named Karliah. She will give you the skeleton key to return to some cave, If you keep this key in your inventory you can use it to pick any lock since its unbreakable, which means no more breaking lockpicks. Thank you to ESO – Fallout & Elder scrolls Guides for helping me get Daedric Armour And Daedric Weapons at level 20!
God i wish bethesda brings back the oblivion style lockpicking, it actually required skill and a brain that functions in order to get through (unless you were a casual or didn’t want to bother with it and used force lock). Also, what kind of locks work that way, 1 pin and the pin chamber rotates with the lock chamber until the whole thing just unlocks? That doesn’t make any fucking sense, especially if you know how the pin locks actually work.
The problem is that you are already at level 100 lock picking… So you start the wrong way already… Extract of elderscroll wiki : No matter what skill level the Dragonborn has, any lock may be picked. Essentially, even if no skill points are put into the tree for lock picking it is still possible to pick every master lock encountered. At lower lockpicking skill levels this can be difficult without booster items or perks. The level add a bonus to the way you can lock pick like every other skill (pick pocket level 100 is not at all the same as level 15 as it increases success rate at an average of 1 % per level without using any skill point).
I open all chests and locks I finding, when I killing bandits in castles or forts, I go to jail dungeon to open every locked door I find coz I start to get really good. All u need is good sight, slow movement, and remember where u find it. A tip is to draw a circle on a table and mark an x of where u find the click. Then just slowly try move to where it moves. I manage to open expert and even master chest pretty easy. What I see ppl who not focus on lockpicking and such that they are way too fast, they fail, go again just ripping the lockpick. And they just too hurry too fast. Just easy slow movement if you feel like its not going further just move away from ur left click and move the lockpick a little bit further till u get it. That all I do. Also quicksave before opening chest so u can always reload and try again.
it works great the only issue is. ( even on expert locks it works great if you move the pick slightly faster or slightly slower sometimes you have to get out and get back in to try again.) it works well but it is not 100% idc how good at lock picking you are if you wiggle that pick long enough to correct its possition it will break so it isnt a 100% failure proof . thanks tho
Playing on Switch and just retraining myself after not playing Skyrim I’m so long, but I can confirm this DOES work(no patches, mods obviously). What makes this even easier is if your controller supports the vibration function(some third party controllers don’t) make sure it’s on and as you slowly move the lockpick, you can feel each click of the lock. When you hear the distinct click, the correct angle should be within a couple degrees of there. Make sure to turn the Music down and Effects up.
