How Is The Jewish Rite Of Circumcision Performed?

The bris or brit milah is the Jewish circumcision ceremony, performed by a skilled mohel (circumciser) on the eighth day after birth, unless there are medical reasons to prevent it. The mohel must have studied religious laws and have the necessary surgical skills for the operation. Circumcision is central to Judaism and is the first commandment given by G-d to Abraham, the first Jew. According to Jewish law, the father or his representative is responsible for circumcising a male child. At one time, fathers actually circumcised their own sons, such as Abraham.

Circumcision is an initiation rite for Jewish newborn babies, usually taking place in a ceremony called a Brit (or Bris) milah witnessed by family and community. The rite of circumcision is seen as the removal by man of an appendage to his body, symbolizing total obedience to God’s. The mohel performs the circumcision in three steps: milah, the cutting of the foreskin; p’riah, the removal of the underlying membrane; and m’tzitzah, drawing the blood from the wound. Milah is traditionally performed with a knife, but many mohalim use a special surgical clamp to facilitate the operation.

The brit milah or bris is a traditional ceremony in Judaism and Samaritanism, during which the foreskin is surgically removed. The ritual evolved to involve someone called a mohel or mohelette trained to perform the bris. The ceremony is followed by a festive meal, where special hymns are sung, and in the Grace after Meals, blessings are recited for the parents, the sandak, and the baby boy.

How is circumcision performed?

Circumcision is a simple procedure where the foreskin is removed behind the penis head using a scalpel or surgical scissors. Bleeding is stopped with cauterisation, and the remaining skin edges are stitched together using dissolvable stitches. The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) provides detailed information on the procedure. After discharge, patients are advised on their recovery at home, including driving, returning to work, and having sex.

Do Jews use Anaesthetic for circumcision?

Jewish religious circumcision is a standardized procedure that is not routinely provided with an anesthetic. The skin is treated with cleansing solutions and sweet liquid or juice is often fed to the baby, but no formal anaesthetic is given. The procedure is standardized and different from Plastibell or hospital surgical methods, which are more likely to cause pain. Fathers often report that their sons begin crying during the procedure, but there is no audible difference in their cry. Some parents administer topical anaesthetic cream on and around the foreskin before Brit Milah is performed.

While there are a small number of Jews who were never circumcised, Brit Milah is the primary symbol of “Jewishness” for most people who identify as part of the Jewish community. Many non-Jewish parents, including members of the Royal Family, use Mohelim services for their sons.

There are no medical implications of circumcision, as the only reasons for observance are religious and cultural. Media reports of positive medical implications are not relevant to the Jewish motivation and there is no evidence to suggest any specific negative effects of the procedure. Millions of Jews and non-Jews have been circumcised worldwide without documented major medical complications.

What to do with foreskin after bris?

The mohel performs a circumcision after reciting blessings, drawing one or two drops of blood. The foreskin is saved and buried, and if a tree is planted, the foreskin is buried beneath it. A Jewish covenant of circumcision is usually scheduled for the eighth day after a boy’s birth, even if it falls on Shabbat or other holidays. If a baby is born on a Wednesday, the bris falls on the following Wednesday. If the baby is born on a Wednesday night, the bris occurs on the following Thursday morning.

Reasons for waiting a week before the bris include experiencing all seven days of creation, learning the sweetness of Shabbat, and medical research suggesting it is the optimal time to perform the circumcision.

How is a Jewish bris performed?

Circumcision involves three steps: removing the baby’s foreskin with a special knife, exposing the glans by tear-off and folding back the mucous membrane, and suctioning blood from the wound. The last stage, metzitzah, is controversial as it was once believed to be a hygienic measure. However, modern suctioning methods are not hygienic, as germs can be transmitted between the mohel and the baby. Some contemporary mohalim use an oral suction tube to avoid direct contact with the baby’s penis, while others use gauze as an adequate means for metzitzah. After surgery, the patient can relax and enjoy the procedure.

How is Jewish circumcision performed?

Male circumcision, the oldest known human surgical procedure, is performed in Israel as a ritual for newborn boys. The procedure, known as a brit milah, involves the removal of the penis foreskin by a religious figure, known as a mohel, on the 8th day after birth. Most mohelim are not medically trained, but training and certification are available through the Israel Ministry of Health. According to Jewish law, circumcision is the physical representation of the covenant between God and Abraham described in the Old Testament and is required for male inclusion in the Jewish faith. The procedure is performed as a celebratory event, in clean but not sterile conditions, and often in the presence of family and friends.

What happens if you get erect after circumcision?

It has been demonstrated that erections have the potential to impede the healing process following surgical procedures, resulting in prolonged recovery times and limitations on physical activity. In the event of bleeding, it is recommended that pressure be applied to the affected area for a period of 10 minutes, with repetition if necessary.

How painful is circumcision?

The pain after circumcision in adults under general anesthesia with an intraoperative penile block is mild to moderate. Severe pain is rare and mostly related to complications. Younger patients generally have more discomfort. The site uses cookies and all rights are reserved, including those for text and data mining, AI training, and similar technologies. How is circumcision done in Bible?

The original Biblical circumcision of Abraham’s time was a minor ritual procedure called Milah, which involved removing only the redundant end of the foreskin beyond the tip of the glans. This procedure was symbolic of the circumcision of the covenant, and it is from this term that the Jewish Religious Covenant circumcision ritual Bris Milah or Brith Milah got its name. This religious practice was a significant part of the Jewish religious life during the time of Abraham.

How is religious circumcision done?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that removes the foreskin from the human penis, often performed electively as a form of preventive healthcare, religious obligation, or cultural practice. It is also used for cases of phimosis, other pathologies that do not resolve with other treatments, and chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, it is contraindicated in cases of certain genital structure abnormalities or poor general health.

Circumcision is associated with reduced rates of sexually transmitted infections and urinary tract infections, including the incidence of cancer-causing forms of HPV and HIV transmission among heterosexual men in high-risk populations. Neonatal circumcision decreases the risk of penile cancer. Complication rates increase significantly with age, with bleeding, infection, and removal of either too much or too little foreskin being the most common acute complications.

Circumcision is one of the world’s most common and oldest medical procedures, with prophylactic usage originated in England during the 1850s and becoming predominately established as a way to prevent sexually transmitted infections. It plays a major role in many cultures and religions, most prominently Judaism and Islam. Circumcision is widespread in Australia, Canada, the United States, South Korea, most of Africa, and parts of Asia, but relatively rare for non-religious reasons in parts of Southern Africa, Latin America, Europe, and parts of Asia.

The origin of circumcision is not known with certainty, but the oldest documentation comes from ancient Egypt.

Is Jewish circumcision painful?

Jewish boys undergo circumcision at 8 days of age, within the neonatal period, without anesthesia. The pain associated with the operation, measured by screams and physiological indices like heart rate and plasma cortisol levels, is severe. Studies have shown that even with a lignocaine injection, babies with recently circumcised hearts have higher cortisol levels and heart rates, which are considered to be consistent with torture.

Other researchers have found similar physiological responses indicative of severe stress during circumcision, including dramatic rises in respiratory rate and trancutaneous oxygen, as well as plasma cortisol levels and heart rate.

These findings contrast with the belief in the Jewish community that circumcision is a minor procedure that doesn’t hurt. Many Jewish people describe a circumcision where the baby doesn’t cry or go to sleep, which is considered to mean no pain. However, studies suggest that these babies may actually be in a lethargic, semicomatose state as a reaction to overwhelming stress.

What is the difference between Jewish circumcision and regular?

The inner preputial epithelium, which is linked to the glans surface, is removed or permanently peeled back during the neonatal stage of circumcision. In medical circumcisions, the epithelium is removed along with the foreskin to prevent post-operative penile adhesion and complications. In ritual circumcisions performed by a mohel, the epithelium is typically peeled off after the foreskin has been amputated, known as priah (bris periah). The main goal of priah is to remove as much of the inner layer of the foreskin as possible and prevent the movement of the shaft skin, creating a “low and tight” circumcision.

This procedure has been performed as part of the Jewish circumcision since the Israelites first inhabited the Land of Israel. The Oxford Dictionary of the Jewish Religion suggests that the more severe method practiced today was likely begun to prevent the possibility of restoring the foreskin after circumcision, and therefore, the rabbis added the requirement of cutting the foreskin in periah.

  • Every single adult in the room during this heinous act should be immediately arrested and charged with felony sexual assault of a child period. Every single adult who knows of these particular ceremonies and does nothing should be immediately charged with aiding and abetting felony sexual assault of a child, period.

  • Here’s my rule for whether or not something is morally ok regardless of its cultural background. If it involves adults consenting adults who are not being threatened (by violence or social shunning) then by all means go for it. If an adult wanted to go through this same circumcision process, I would fully support that. However, if the cultural practice involves permanently harming someone who are unable to consent either due to age or coercion, then it’s wrong.

  • For all the people bashing women and saying that we don’t care, this that and other. Well, I’m here to say that I DO care and if I ever have a son, he certainly will not be circumcised. About 95% of the men in my family a circumcised and I don’t care. It won’t effect my decision to keep my son whole. Any who, stop bashing women and calm down.

  • I am going to sound really naive here but please forgive me, I am from the Isle of Man (and yes, it is a real place). Why are so many newborn boys circumcised in the US? It isn’t the norm at all where I live. I think it should be something that the newborn can have done when he is an adult and able to make an informed decision on it. I have 3 boys and none of them are circumcised, it just wasn’t even thought about at the time. “Oh congratulations on the birth of your son, let me cut a bit off his genitalia”. It doesn’t compute. Anyone who says it is for hygiene is wrong as it is easily kept clean. It just seems to be something that is popular in the US, regardless of religion full stop.

  • None of my Conservative friends support this. We’re actually making fun of it in our chat group now. There’s hundreds of us calling this gross right now. I think Cenk believes Conservatives would support this because “muh tradition”. No, we are disgusted by it and would do something I can’t type if we knew we’d get away with it when we find these Jewish men who are doing this to innocent babies. Not everything the Liberals hate is loved by Conservatives, I think we can all agree that this practice is evil and extremely disgusting.

  • please correct me if am wrong but i live in England recently we passed a law banning female genital mutational on the grounds of religion but not male genital mutational is still okay ( circumcision) i can not remember the last time i herded about such a sexiest law. this news article makes my point very well, if this happened to a women there would make international new and would lead to rioting in the streets and new laws been passed but because its happened to a male it never made it to England and no Americans were rioting in the streets . why is it okay to do this to a man but not a women

  • Did you hear about the 2 young Jewish boys that were walking back from school, when, one asked a question to his friend. “Hey, I say, I say, I say, What is a foreskin?” And his friend replied (thinking it is a joke), “I do not know what a foreskin is, so please tell me, what is a foreskin?” And the answer is………”No, I do not know what a foreskin is, that’s why I am asking you. I even asked my Dad, and he does not know either what a foreskin is. Oh well, let’s keep on walking quickly, otherwise we will be late for that special party called “Brit Milah!”

  • “Some cultures that suck” No pun intended, lol. If you do not deplore this practice and do not see it as the molestation that it clearly is, you have no right to complain about all the Catholic priests who have introduced alterboys to their bishops. Additionally, if you are not against removing parts of the genitals of any infant, regardless of gender, you have no right to bitch about the removal of bits of only one gender’s genitals. Cutting off parts of a baby’s junk, any baby, is not cool, and should not be legal, anywhere. It’s astounding that such an absurdly obvious statement should even need to be said. If people want to cut bits off of themselves, they need to be an adult. If you need to be 18 to smoke, get a tattoo, or get a piercing, then for fucks sake you sure as hell need to be 18 to be able to make the legal decision to remove parts of your own body. And someone else, including your parents, have no right to make the decision to cut pieces off of you or anyone else – at any age.

  • Well it defiantly is not a good thing for infants to get herpes. But to everyone going back and forth, being atheist and getting my circumcision was from the hospital it self. I am quite happy that I had gotten circumcised, I like the way my junk looks and if I had a son I would get him a little cut off the top as well. So I do not see the problem here, ASIDE from herpes.

  • A lot of 15-25 year olds go to urologists complaining about pain during sex, so they get circumcisions to get rid of said pain. Adult circumcisions is a lot more painful and the recovery is months long as an adult, as there is a lot more length as an adult. I speak from personal experience. Worst. Pain. Of. My. Life. Sex is much better now than it was before. I wish I had been snipped as an infant.

  • No matter the arguments for circumcision, one cannot deny that the foreskin provides a huge utility for masturbation. It should be a crime to do any medically unnecessary body modifications to people who cannot consent. Your free will to practice religion should not supersede the free will of the equal human being that you care for that is currently an infant. The reasons for circumcision are almost exactly the same ones we hear for female genital mutilation. It looks better. It’s easier to keep clean. If they don’t have it cut they won’t fit in with their peers. “God” commands us to do it. If “God” doesn’t want us to have those parts, why did he write them into our DNA and also the DNA of other mammals? Is he incompetent? If your “God” commands you to cut your crying child’s genitals, if your “God” asks you to make blood sacrifices of living creatures, and if your “God” demands obedience under the threat of eternal torment, maybe he is not a creator, but a destroyer, a dominating and controlling service to self type creature that doesn’t love you in excess of the utility your provide for him. Maybe “God” is a projection of the psychopathic minds that gave us so many of the religions. In any case, genital mutilation is apparently demonic to someone who hasn’t been sold unquestionable nonsense. Witness one.

  • WOW, a couple days after I sent and deleted a couple comments asking for a real critical look at circumcision by TYT Ana’s position has moved from laughing indifference in a article posted 3 years ago to circumcision being “highly questionable.” Wow. The Young Turks, along with Abby Martin, deserve real respect for being some of the first journalists to question this practice. I hope to see a lot more of it. I just wish Cenk would go a little farther and question the practice of circumcision as a whole.

  • Circumcision is highly questionable? By who? If done by a professional surgeon it is one of the safest operations ever and the chance of bad side-effects is very low. And how the fuck did this story go from two young boys getting circumcised to some feminist rant about female circumcision, which is very different.

  • Its not a coincidence that after circumcision, Jews are required to recite a mantra blessing called ‘Hagomel’, which is reserved specifically for occasions when a person is no longer at risk to their life. Also, if you ask the well known and highly (but selectively) regarded 12th century rabbi Maimonides, the purpose of circumcision is for reducing the enjoyment from sex. Ask people who were not only circumcised as adults, but also had sex before and several years after.

  • And you wonder WHY God hates them? Ok..here goes: Malachi 1 King James Version (KJV) 1 The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi. 2 I have loved you, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the Lord: yet I loved Jacob, 3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. 4 Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the Lord of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call THEM, THE BORDER OF WICKEDNESS, and, The people against whom the Lord hath indignation FOR EVER.” In fact, NOT ONE of them shall remain on this earth for the wickedness they have done against the REAL Children of Israel. Obadiah 1:18 “And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of ESAU FOR STUBBLE, and they shall kindle in them, and DEVOUR THEM; and there shall not be any REMAINING of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.” GO READ THESE SCRIPTURES FOR YOURSELVES. UNLIKE YOUR PASTOR WHO HAVE NEVER TOLD YOU THESE THINGS, YET, IT IS IN THE BIBLE. For all the blood these evil bastards have shed, they shall pay for it; NUMBERS 35:33. “So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land CANNOT be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.”

  • I agree this vile practice of oral suction during Jewish circumcision must be outlawed. I disagree that circumcision is something to be avoided. I believe it should be the choice of the parents. Genital mutilation is precisely what happens with gender reassignment surgeries. People can’t have it both ways.

  • The foreskin is very similar in both tissue composition and purpose to the eyelids. After all, you don’t “need” eyelids. You can live without them. How often do you blink anyways. And removing them will make you more vigilant and less prone to falling asleep during boring meetings etc. See, there’s almost no downside. Think about it!

  • absolute lies. this criminal barbaric ritual has absolutely NO medical nor sexual nor social benefit whatsoever. this article denying the sexual and psychological damages is deceptive. the damages are significant, life diminishing and irreversible ! plus the victim is not even allowed to make that decision . brutality and lawlessness at its worst

  • PLEASE READ Lets discuss the Risks of infant circumcision, shall we. Funny that doctors do not want to discuss everything that can go wrong. They keep that part quiet to themselves… #1. Gastric Rupture (from screaming so hard, can be fatal) #2. Lung Rupture (from screaming so hard, can be fatal) #3. Shock (No, your baby did not “sleep through it like a champ” the way nurses & doctors lie, telling parents. Shock can cause serious drop to blood pressure & impact the heart rate. Can be fatal) #4. Scratching & Clawing their face (if they break free from being strapped down) #5. Vomiting (if they ate anything prior to procedure, and they can choke on this vomit if a nurse does not suction it out quickly, because again the baby is strapped down on their back. So in extremely rare cases, can be fatal) #6. Refusing to feed afterwards, due to trauma & post-procedure pain AND THAT’S RISKS JUST RELATED TO THE PAIN THEY ARE IN Other risks of infant genital mutilation on boys include but are not limited to: #7. Infection (which baby’s lack an immune system for fighting off. Can be fatal) #8. Neonatal Hemorrhage (which babies can die from easily, since they have less blood in their tiny bodies than an adult would have. They only have to lose 2 to 3 ounces of blood to die from this complication) Neonatal hemorrhage is not uncommon. Regret moms have posted pics of their baby in the ER and diapers FULL of blood, after letting some sick doctor cut their baby! #9. Increased Risk of SIDs #10. Guaranteed, two other parts of his penis are destroyed & lost during the procedure.

  • Today circumcision isn’t necessary or serve a true medical benefit. However, in the days of the Old Testament it definitely served a purpose. In a time and place when clean water was more scarce and bathing was less common, and antibiotics didn’t exist, circumcision reduced the incidence of infections, particularly UTIs and kidney infections.
