A magic ring or magic circle is a crochet technique that creates a neater and more professional appearance to the center of your piece without an unsightly hole. It is often used interchangeably with a magic circle, and there is no fixed number of stitches needed to crochet a magic ring. To create a magic ring, you need a ball of yarn and a corresponding crochet hook. Cotton is the easiest to work with when working with this technique.
To crochet a magic ring, you need to crochet the required number of stitches (usually single crochets) into the loop, working over both the loop and the yarn tail. Close the ring and work over both the loop and the yarn tail. When you chain and then work into your ring, you leave a hole in your work. Most crocheters start off with a magic ring of 6 stitches (or 6 sc in magic ring) because it creates a nice closed-up magic circle with no hole in the center and turns out fairly flat.
In this tutorial, I am crocheting 6 single crochet stitches into the Magic Ring, which is often written as “6 sc into a Magic Ring”. Many patterns call for a starting round of 6-12 stitches, but this can be increased to 12dc stitches depending on the pattern.
In this example, I have 6 single crochet stitches in place of 6 double crochet stitches. The process of creating a magic ring involves creating a loop of yarn, working over both the loop and the yarn tail, and closing the ring.
