The magic ring is a popular technique for starting a crochet project in the shape of a circle, creating an attractive center without leaving unsightly holes. It is also known as a Magic Loop or Magic Circle. To create an easy magic ring, wrap yarn around your fingers to form a loop, insert your crochet hook into the loop, pull up a loop of yarn, and crochet.
The magic circle is a technique used for starting crochet projects in the round, replacing foundation circles like chain 4 and slip stitch to first chain made, and eliminating unsightly holes in the center. To close a magic circle, thread the long tail end of your darning needle. If the circle is coming undone, cut about 12″ of new yarn (the same color and weight) to fix it.
To make a magic ring, replace your small hook with a bigger one, hold the stitches with your right hand, and pull the yarn tail to close the ring. Keep pulling until the hole is as small as possible.
As you work your stitches for round 1, ensure you are working over both the ring and the tail end. Gently pull on the tail end and close the Magic Ring. Leave the hook inserted in the first stitch, and pull the yarn tail. The ring should close, like by magic, resulting in the magic ring.
