The chakras are often mispronounced words in yoga, but learning how to confidently say the names of the seven chakras in Sanskrit with correct pronunciation is essential for exploring this ancient system of energy healing. In traditional Hatha Yoga, the seven cleansing bija mantras associated with the chakras are: “LAM” (root), “VAM” (sacral/navel), “RAM” (solar plexus), and “YAM”. Listening to these chakra sounds can bring balance, healing, and awakening to different parts of the mind, body, and spirit.
The first sound is the vowel, and the second is the sacred sound associated with the chakra. The “notes” are indicated in the “do re mi fa sol la ti” scale. Highlight the “a” sound, enunciating it as a short “a” sound, like in “cat” or “bat”. Mute the “r” sound, refraining from elongating or elongating.
The seven chakra sounds include Lam, Vam, Ram, Yam, Ham, and Aum. Each sound has its own element, color, energy, and action. The “a” in “Lam” and other seed syllables is pronounced “ah”, or “uh”. The mantra VANG is focused in the sacral chakra, while the mantra VAM is sounded as VANG.
Mantras for each chakra have six variations, with the most common being OM (as in “home”), which is written as AUM. Proper pronunciation of these mantras shows respect for the culture from where they originate.
