How To Create Magic Tricks On Your Own?

This article explores the process of creating magic tricks, focusing on the creative aspect of magicians and how to apply these insights to create unique illusions. The author recommends either using existing playing cards or purchasing new ones. The article also discusses the importance of setting goals and learning key moves for creating magic tricks.

To create magic tricks, the author provides five tips: 1) Get the necessary equipment, 2) Learn the key moves, 3) Put the pieces together, and 4) Practice and perform.

An example of a magic trick involves asking spectators to choose three cards from a standard 52-card deck. Once chosen, they are asked to take a picture of it. The process of creating magic tricks can be long, but with the right guidance, one can create magical effects such as magic wands, sleight of hand, cut ribbon reassemblement, and guessing people’s thoughts.

Some ideas to consider include retooling existing effects, substituting sleights for different ones, and combining certain elements. To prepare and perform a magic trick, follow the video instruction, which involves placing a thread through an envelope and a card inside.

In summary, creating magic tricks requires creativity, equipment, and practice. By following these steps, aspiring magicians can become original inventors of magic and create unique illusions for their audiences.

  • Hi. Just wanted to clarify something. Lots of people are acting like I’m starting a new website or I’m done with magic. Neither of which is true. There will still be tutorials on this website from other creators and I will give my input. In fact nothing has really changed. I uploaded 1 tutorial about every 5-10 articles before and will continue to do so, just going to focus on other creators, cardistry, tips and theory etc.. Anyways, let’s not get carried away. I’m here for good. CR

  • This and “Be yourself” go hand in hand when it comes to stuff like magic and youtube. I think they both have there own benefits, but you cannot truly be creative without being yourself and not trying to copy others. At the same time, when you are truly creative, you are being your own individual self.

  • Your “Using a card to clean your fingernails” idea gave me inspiration, so I want to give someone else inspiration. Anyone, as an exercise see if you can make this into a real trick: You finish a card trick and go into a patter about how we magicians have so many different magical items and tricks that it can be hard to keep track of them, you know how like people get dirt under their fingernails and don’t remember ever touching dirt. As you do this you take the corner of a card and act as if you’re flicking dirt out from beneath your fingernail and produce a coin. It could be palmed and fling out onto the table as if it was stuck under your fingernail. Then you can go into a coin routine.

  • Just an idea for those who are magicians, i just do tricks for fun and take my brain away from every day life. When chris mentioned fraternity whatever, i came up with an act where two random people come together and within the trick they both select a card that seems random but only each of the person can know their own card and in the end you reveal that both these people have alot more in common than what u think. Perhaps one of the chose the king of spades and the other the king of clovers. 👍

  • I’m a subscriber and probably less interested in performing magic than most of your subscribers but I love the website. Your tutorials and articles on magic theory really inspire me. I’m an artist that does blacksmithing, woodworking, drawing, and tattooing. I’ve found your website to be a huge help when I’m trying to think outside of the box. Sure I could go watch blacksmithing, woodworking, or tattooing websites to get ideas but then my ideas would tend to just mimic the work by those artists. I really enjoyed this article and it gave me a couple new ideas to get creative. Thanks Chris.

  • Dude, great vid. Yes, sticking with you till the bitter end. Well, hopefully not so bitter. Since I’ve been in creative fields pretty much my whole life, I have learned, used and forgotten a boatload of techniques for jumpstarting the flow. One of my favorites still is meditation. Not like TM or zen or anything structured like that, but more of a deeper version of “doing nothing”. Just sitting (or walking) for 10-20 minutes, clearing the mind and allowing those random thoughts to pass through. The key is to not hold onto any one thought and just let them pass by without attachment. UNTIL that one EUREKA! one comes along and then you’re pretty much done. Though you can also continue to build upon that idea in your little mind-palace for as long as you like. I’ve had some good ideas built this way.

  • “first thing I do is question things, questioning things is a really, really good way of finding out certain specific things about an item. So it may seem a little weird, but if I’m stuck and I want to create something using an object I will right down 20 questions about this object. So first the questions are going to be something like. Why is this Black -” Me: Bruh. BRUH BRUHHHHHH

  • What’s up Chris. I heard a lot about what happened with the tutorial articles and many people calling you out on teaching magic for free and essentially “stealing other people’s creations”. I just want to say that myself along with tons of other people who follow you and your website are fully behind you and support you. Most of these magicians who are offended by your teaching magic don’t understand that magic and the magic community are changing and that YouTube is a major platform where magic is “flourishing” (pun intended 😂). Just wanted to get that all out and let you know that the RamFam is still here for ya. Keep up the good work man! 💪✌

  • I love the concept of the article, as it not only refers to magic but to all kinds of situations that need creativity – I myself know the “problem” of non-creative phases from writing. Some ways that help me to push my creativity: – change the perspective: whenever I get stuck, I simply grab my laptop and leave the office (out to the woods, into the sun,…). Helps my brain to change the perspective and direction of thinking – take a shower: again weird, but refers back to being in bed at night – procrastinate: put your thoughts/project aside for some days and let it grow in your mind – although you are not actively thinking of it, your brain still keeps processing. Helped me a lot of times to pinpoint the drawbacks of an idea. Sorry for the long post, just my two cents. #ramfam4life

  • Hi Chris and RamFam! I was doing some research about card tricks and came across an Open Source library called Archive.org. If you do a search on “card tricks” within the archive you’ll discover a bunch of old books that are worth mining for tricks that can be updated/adapted to fit your own twist. These are free to download onto many devices as well as having a pretty nice web interface. Bon chance on building your next set!

  • Luv this article, have been trying to create new illusions for years now. Here is my latest idea: Magician has head visually cut off, placed on a table, then headless magician walks around while head on the table commands the headless magician. Have most of this worked out, just need to figure out anamatronic for head.

  • Dude I think that not doing tutorials and doing this kind of article is better because there is totally a difference between knowing how to do a trick for someone and then actually performing a trick. When I first started magic, I would learn the method and use whatever plotline/ patter the tutorial gave, but when I would go to do the trick for someone, it felt very staged or fake or something. It is really important to be able to create your own stuff so when you perform, it’s not like you’re reciting a speech you memorized for the spectator. I really like these kinds of articles you put out because I can use it in conjunction with all the other great magic tutorials and content that is out there. Doing this is also a plus because then you can come up with your own variations on things by using bits and pieces from different people. It’s brings the community together and it stretches your creativity. Besides, no matter how great a single website or magician is, there is now way you can learn everything you need to know to be a good creator, magician, and performer from one person. That was pretty long, but I hope I was able to make some good points. I would also love to see a article on creating patter for tricks (original or something you’ve learned from someone else) since that’s still something I struggle doing.

  • Chris Ramsay don’t worry about some backlash from the last article. You always going to find some people who are so bitter with their own life that they try to bring others down with them. Ignore those people and don’t waste your time thinking about them. We’re here to support and be with you every single day and truly appreciate who you are and what you do in your teaching for your community.

  • There is deffinetly more to learning than just being told the answer, I saw you do the card to pocket where it’s the entire deck in your pocket except the selected card that is in your other hand a couple times on different articles and watched it back and I think I’ve got it down proper, either way I use a functioning version of it and it’s my go to when anyone says the magic words “show me a magic trick” and everyone I’ve preformed it for has loved it and id love to know the name of it, any way you’ll probly never see this but I am a bit disappointed there’s no more tutorials but I respect your hustle and everything you do man you got a good heart keep it up

  • You are going to be missed. I have been trying to do what you do. I have put all your tricks and toreaels I know its not spelled right but I have color change 86 and slide of hand 96 and all the different ones that you have done so well. I will keep perusal your liked tricks to many to mention, I live in àùstiralia you will be very mist even over here. Thanks for your time and help. Thanks.

  • I’ve been perusal since right before you went full time, and honestly, I’m at that point where I don’t need tutorials anymore. I need stuff like this and that article you did with Pandrea. When you think about it, this is the logical progression/growth spurt you website needs. This the content your followers need to grow as magicians/performers/hobbyists.

  • why cant anyone recommend a book or a website etc without having to say “this is not paid promotion” if it isnt? doo people really get that butthurt over paid promotion? i get that you have to tell if it is paid promotion since it is legally required, but i really dont understand why one has to point it out when it isnt. but other than that, great article, you should write a book youself, you are such an inspiring peron Chris, and i love your articles.
