How To Perform Card Magic Up Close?

Close up magic is a special genre of magic tricks performed in an intimate setting for small groups of people. It is often performed for around 25 people, but it is more common to perform for smaller groups, usually 1-3 people. Each card trick is very visual and doesn’t require much practice. To improve your close up magic skills, practice in a mirror image via Pexels.com, pay for information, examine all finger positions image via pexels.com, work on looking relaxed, cut out any extraneous movements, talk as you practice, and practice morning, noon, and night.

To learn close up magic, start by practicing in front of a mirror and doing them for several minutes each day. This will give you a nice little foundation where you can start learning some basic card and coin tricks. Some favorite close-up card magic tricks include “Switch One”, “Turn”, “CVF Deck”, and “Phantom Deck”.

Most close up magic involves card tricks, which fall under the classification of sleight of hand tricks. Other forms of close up magic involve playing cards, coin tricks, and even mentalism. Crafting a captivating close-up magic act involves selecting and sequencing effects that flow seamlessly together, considering pacing, variety, and audience engagement when designing your act.

Some fun close-up magic tricks include “RD Insta”, “Double Cross”, “Melero Rings”, “Magic Loops”, and “Haunted Key Deluxe”. To perform these tricks, put the selected card under the top card of the deck, take the card back from the person, and hold the cards out of sight or behind your back.

  • Backpalm This is the kind of tutorial article that is gold. Very clearly broken down and explained and all sides are shown so that you know what to expect when it is down right. You even explain some beginning mistakes that most people will make when just starting out and how you will know that you are improving. Fantastic.

  • I came to understand how to go to a backhand palm from a normal pinky palm… and boi did that last part help.. my reveals are way better now.. I can literally pick the card from the air.. earlier I used to like control it to the top or pocket it… Thanks a lot.. the actual mechanic is slow motion helped instead of just doing it normally and using the camera to slow it down. GGs

  • just a small piece of advice to help you with your technique and presentation, you keep straight fingers when you are showing the card disappeared, something that looks better is to bend your fingers, the card is still hidden, but with your fingers not straight it now looks like it’s not behind your hand, test it out and you will be amazed how sharp it looks! also when you do this your thumb is no longer extended so you can rub your thumb and index together, to make a more appealing look when you bring back the card! 😉

  • You looked up as you “tossed” the card in the air, GREAT misdirect…you said to “believe your magic”, also great. The thing is, you believed the card was tossed into the air as you looked up and tracked it with your eyes…but what goes up must come down. You stopped believing the card was in the air and your eyes didn’t “follow” the card back down into your hand. It just reappeared in your hand. I’d like to add…track the card with your eyes and follow the card “down” into your hand. Great trick, thank you. It was the first trick I ever learned years back and that pivot is a 10/10

  • Though I’m not a magician I know this trick since my 13’s and I remember being practicing A LOT in front of the mirror. It has been my signature move with girls for maaaany years, and I even learnt few more tricks, mixed them together to make my own new-easy trick… and you wouldn’t tell how many free shots i’ve earned with that xD So yeah, you have no money? Magic trick + Some jokes + Bar bets = Free drinks.

  • Hi, I’ve got a problem related to my fingers. When I fully straighten them, there is always a little gap between my pinky and ring finger. The card can never be held at position. I think the muscles involved during the vanish of the card is related to the Vulcan salute (my left hand can do so and there’s no gap between my ring and pinky). So is that changeable? Thx
