How To Select Significators In Traditional Horary Astrology?

Horary astrology is an ancient form of astrology that uses the current time at which a question is heard and understood to answer a specific question. Significators, planets that show phenomena, states, objects, people, or other living beings, are crucial in this field. Each planet has specific meanings and associations, and their placement in a horary chart can reveal the issues at hand.

When reading a horary chart, one must consider 2-3 significators and their interactions, including the Moon, ruler of the ascendant, and relevant House ruling Planet. The significators in a horary chart symbolize various facets of the querent’s life, from personal relationships to career. One of the fundamental techniques in traditional horary astrology is the identification of planetary significators, as each planet has specific meanings and associations.

A horary chart is read by first assigning the thing asked about, the “quesited”, to a particular house in the chart. For example, if asking “where” is asked, the significator of others (7th ruler, Mercury) or employees (6th ruler) will be identified.

In order to accurately time predictions out of horaries and other astrological charts, it is essential to include context, who or what is involved, and what is going on. The ruling planet for the querent’s rising sign will be the significator for the querent in the chart.

In summary, horary astrology is a powerful tool for predicting future outcomes when its rules are applied meticulously.

What is the horary method of astrology?

Horary is an astrological method that involves answering specific questions by examining a chart drawn for the moment of the question. It shares similarities with martial arts training, teaching a combination of method and intuition. Repetitive practice results in art that goes beyond all techniques. Horary possesses this martial quality because it functions exclusively in the moment, going beyond the birth moment with transits and progressions. As it is immediate, its skills must be sharper and cut deeper.

This work aims to present the technique of Horary, viewed through the lens of Western Classical Astrology. By the end of the book, readers will have a good understanding of how Classical Astrology works, how Horary works, the types of questions Horary can answer, and the approaches available to answer those questions. Is it possible to have all 12 signs in your chart?

Is it possible to have all 12 signs in your chart?

A birth chart contains 360 degrees and contains 12 zodiac signs, 12 houses, two luminaries (the Sun and Moon), and eight planets. Each house is divided into 12 different houses, and the Rising sign (Ascendant) determines the direction of the following house. For example, an Aries Rising person’s first house is ruled by Aries, and their second house is ruled by Taurus. If a Taurus Rising person’s second house is ruled by Gemini, they approach matters like money and belongings like a Taurus. Conversely, a Gemini Rising person’s second house is ruled by Cancer, and they approach matters like a Cancer.

Planetary rulers also provide insight into each house, with the ruling planet being Venus. For example, if Libra falls on the 7th house cusp, they approach relationships and partnerships like a Libra, exhibiting a sweet, charming, and harmonious way. By examining Venus’s position in the birth chart, one can gain insight into how they exhibit these energies.

What is traditional horary astrology?

Horary Astrology, a branch of Traditional Astrology, deals with questions and problems. Known as Mesail in Ottoman Turkish, it uses horoscopes to make judgments on immediate questions. Astrologers create charts when they understand the question and judge them. This branch is interesting and can provide accurate predictions when rules are applied meticulously. AstroArt School of Astrology offers a 12-week online course on Horary Astrology, starting on November 12, 2022. The course aims to teach students how to give specific answers for specific questions, and will be conducted on the Perculus system.

How to interpret an horary chart?

Horary charts are used to represent questions about a person’s life, such as a lost dog, by assigning the “quesited” to a house in the chart. The house cusp of the sixth house, which governs small animals, is in a sign like Libra, ruled by Venus. Venus’s state in the horoscope provides insights into the animal’s wellbeing and location. Astrological aspects between the planets representing the querent and those representing the quesited indicate future connections. The Regiomontanus house system is commonly used in contemporary horary astrology, following the work of William Lilly, an influential early modern horary astrologer.

What are significators in astrology?

What are significators in astrology?

Astrology is a branch of study that involves the study of astrological symbols and their associated horoscope factors. The process of finding the significator in a horoscope involves translating concrete facts back into their symbolic form, such as the position of Jupiter in the Ninth House in religion or the house cusp in the Sagittarius sign. This approach is crucial for understanding horoscopes and the world around us. However, there are not always clear parallels between astrological terms and the more general ones used to describe the world around us.

For instance, the skin, for example, has Venus as its significator as a sensual organ and Saturn as its outer boundary. Therefore, cosmic language and Earth-specific situations may not always be identical.

What is the most powerful aspect of astrology?

Conjunctions are powerful aspects in a horoscope chart, as they intensify the effects of the involved planets. Highly favorable conjunctions may involve the Sun, Venus, or Jupiter, while highly unfavorable ones may involve the Moon, Mars, or Saturn. In 1970, the Sun, Venus, and Jupiter were in a three-way beneficial conjunction, while the Moon, Mars, and Saturn were in a 3-way detrimental conjunction. If a conjunction is also under tension from one or more hard aspects with other planets, the added presence of the conjunction will further intensify that tension.

What are the elements of traditional astrology?

What are the elements of traditional astrology?

Ancient astrology used seasonal elements such as air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), and water (Castor, Scorpio, Pisces) to interpret the astrological chart. Classical elements, also known as triplicities, have been used in Western astrology and Sidereal astrology since antiquity. In Western tropical astrology, there are 12 astrological signs, each associated with three Zodiac signs, located 120 degrees away along the ecliptic.

Modern astrologers use these elements extensively, making them a critical part of interpreting the astrological chart. The cycle of elements begins with Aries, followed by Taurus, Gemini, and finally Cancer, ending with Pisces. The elemental rulerships for the twelve zodiac signs are summarized by Marcus Manilius.

How to analyze astrology?

The Zodiac wheel, a part of the astrology chart, is divided into 12 inner sections, with the ascendant at 9 o’clock, marking the first house. The ascendant is responsible for influencing your personality, physical appearance, attitude, and temperament. The second house represents money, personal assets, self-worth, and attitude towards financial security and emotional well-being. The third house represents communication and transportation, influencing your mental attitude, learning style, self-expression, and manner of speech.

The fourth house represents home, family, and property, influencing your roots, background, childhood, and inner emotions. The fifth house represents children and how you relate to them, as well as your approach to pleasure and fun. The sixth house is the house of health and service, representing your general physical well-being throughout life. The sign and planets in each house greatly influence your personality and relationships.

  • You have given excellent definations of the three methods of using a void of course moon. I have noticed in the Regulus edition of William Lillys – three books of christain Astrology, on page 112 that a ‘Planet is void of course when’ etc and thought, “has anyone studied the idea of each of the planets being void of course and possable meanings in an Horary chart or maybe even in ther types of charts.?” might a void venus be a debility?

  • I was actually wondering about houses with that system and… when I threw one out, it was in Placidus which is a system I really don’t like where I altered it in my head until o went ahead and changed the settings when I decided it was worth saving. I stuck with whole signs figuring it was more why whole signs likely existed while also viewing it more accurate in terms of it reflecting exactly the context and sub-context of the question. Quadrants likely had a better answer, but the significators were right away in the 10th, 9th, and 5th. Well, 9th and 10th. It wasn’t directly about either, but the sub-context was if going down multiple rabbit holes was worth the time. Part of me holds the view that if casting a horary depends on something internal that’s persistent then causality then whatever house system is used is the right one. Even if I used a quadrant it’d wrap around to whole sign in interpretation. I prefer the floating MC and the MC in quadrant was actually much more beneficial. By a lot. Using whole sign as preferred wasn’t a biased move. However, one way of looking at it is that it’s extremely beneficial where I’m NOT going to like it. But house cast as 5th being hobbies related to the 9th is extremely accurate as a secondary where the initial is really good, but not comfortable with it. A lot of applying, the separating parts may be why I even asked the question to begin with. Anyways, just figured I’d say initially being a whole sign skeptic less than a year ago… I actually prefer whole signs while any house system by how horary works probably works fine.

  • Be sure to check out the description page for this episode on the podcast website, which has a detailed episode outline, some pictures of the considerations from Lilly, and links to some of Sue’s articles on the topic: theastrologypodcast.com/2021/03/24/the-considerations-before-judgement-with-sue-ward/

  • Thank you both so much for this. I’ve been studying horary recently and just got my copy of Christian Astrology in the mail. The part she said about knowing exactly what the client would want in an ideal world was tremendously helpful to my understanding of how to look at a horary, even ones I have done for myself when I didn’t quite want to admit to myself what I really wanted.

  • This is a subject I completely have no interest in where I randomly (out of nowhere) decided to do a quick learn on horary (just to get a general understanding) then doing one using a broad general question where I ended up shocked because it actually seemed to have the detailed semantics and nuances related to the question. It wasn’t completely out of the blue, I coughed up the money to buy the three books of occult philosophy reading a nice chunk over the weekend, bothered because I wasn’t fond of actually spending money to wake up to find I had minor storm damage to my car so the book wasn’t a big deal in price.. enough to be annoyed wondering if studying all of this has a point. I also know nothing of horary where it’s referenced. A nuanced question would be if studying it will actually be useful and that’s an annoying yes. Anyways, another nuance is I’ll likely always have that eye roll attitude towards the subjects. The horary chart is actually more entertaining if the natal chart is known. It’s at least a motivator to use it to dive a little deeper into that wing of astrology, I think it’s the name that makes me not have much interest. My only thing about the 3 books is it’s too tied to Christianity so far. I did find humor in the ophanim thing since they’re tied to either the cherubim or seraphim.. by that book it’s be tied to seraphim. Just kind of chuckled to myself with that. The horary answer wasn’t that intriguing, it’s testable and only for the sake of testing. However, the detail in the chart with subtle nuances that I know what they mean caught my attention.

  • thank you so much for this interviw with Sue Ward on the subject of Horary Astrology, Lilly and his and Horarys historical context. wow to the revelation about lillys second edition that was actually pirated when his printing plates were used without permission. All these years i never knew this. fascinating. this is a Gem of a article discussion.

  • From my own experience I can say that it is essential to ask the right question as in working with other methods of divination like in tarot or I Ching. It was really embarrassing when you see yourself in the cards and the person asks about their love life. Then as time goes on you realize you were right. Of course the very moment of the answer is when you realize you figured out that person and you are in trouble.

  • At the time Lilly was writing and practicing England was involved in a Civil War between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians led by Oliver Cromwell. It was a tricky time (in 1648 King Charles II was executed) and I imagine that spies on both sides were plentiful. An unguarded word by an astrologer could likely have caused serious problems. Could it be that Lilly was trying to protect himself, and others, from being in any way indiscreet thus avoiding possible trouble? It stirred many memories when you and Sue mentioned astrologers whom I knew: Derek Appleby, Maurice McCann, et al. Some of them came to conferences organised by the Irish Astrological Association, now sadly defunct, I understand. I am enjoying your podcast very much.

  • Lilly’s quote says that the moon is void of course when it has separated from a planet and will not make any future application to a planet “during his being in that sign.” Would this not mean that the moon could not be void of course for part of its stay in a sign as shown in the example here as the moon will indeed conjoin with jupiter? Not sure if i’m somehow misunderstanding. Thanks!

  • Hey Chris, thank you so much for your interviews. I don’t know if you have covered this, but what does it mean for the chart ruler to be a malefic? Would an anaylsis of Scorpio, Aquarius, Capicorn, and Aries rising as a group reveal something about the complex effect of malefics, that go beyond their baleful reputation?
