The Bhagavad Gita emphasizes the importance of yoga as a journey of self-discovery. To gauge your personal yoga practice, consider factors such as stress levels, aches and pains, sleep quality, flexibility, breath, and body awareness. The first yoga class taught you that true yogis are attractive, well-dressed individuals who perform handstands and effortlessly put their feet behind their heads. However, those sitting on their mats with closed eyes or supported by bolsters and blocks lack strong practices.

A competitive 19-year-old mind aimed to emulate these ‘true yogis’, aiming to touch their toes, do yoga pretzels, and look like a yoga magazine cover. By assessing these aspects, you can improve your yoga practice and overall well-being.

What does yoga count as?

It is similar to a fictitious body with the longitude equal to the sum of the sun and moon’s longitudes moving through the zodiac. There are 27 yogas, similar to the nakṣatras, with names based on the sum of the moon’s and sun’s longitudes.

The yogas are named after the first yoga, which starts at 0° and has a width of 13° 20′. They are not mentioned in the Vedas and seem to have developed as astrology became popular. Astronomically, yoga is significant as it is similar to the other four angas of the panchanga.

The figure below shows the ecliptic, the path of the sun around the sky, with the zodiac, nakṣatras, and yogas marked. The boundaries of yoga are the same as those of the nakṣatra (constellation).

Raja yoga is a concept in Hindu astrology that focuses on the positive aspects of planetary combinations and their impact on personal and professional success. These yogas are believed to bring success, financial prosperity, and a grand rise in career or business during the dasha of the planets that give rise to them. However, these results can be adversely modified by the presence of other Ashubha (inauspicious) Arista yogas.

Raja yoga-causing planets during their respective dashas confer their most auspicious results if they own the lagna-bhava (the Ascendant), the Suta-bhava (the 5th house), or the Bhagyasthana (the 9th house). The person remains healthy, wealthy, happy, and successful enjoying yoga and Raja yoga results if the lagna, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 9th, and 12th houses counted from the lagna are not occupied by any planet, and the kendras (quadrants) are occupied only by benefic planets.

The term “Raja yoga” is not defined in texts dealing with Hindu Predictive astrology, but all such planetary situations and combinations that indicate good fortune, wealth, comforts, exercise of ruling power, and political influence gained, either by way of inheritance or acquired through self-effort, are termed as Raja yogas.

For any yoga or Raja yoga to produce more effective results, the yoga-causing planets possessing requisite six kinds of strength (Shadbala) must form an immediate relationship with the Lagna (‘Ascendant’), which can be achieved by any one of them occupying or aspecting the lagna or by directly associating with the lord of the lagna without any one being afflicted by either natural or functional malefics.

Varaha Mihira states that the results of powerless planets are enjoyed in dreams and thoughts only. If any planet occupying a particular sign as part of a yoga formation happens to be aspected by the lord of that sign and both occupy auspicious houses, alone a Raja yoga is formed.

According to Parasara, the most powerful Raja yoga arises when the strong lord of the lagna is in the 5th house and the strong lord of the 5th house occupies the lagna-kendra, or if the Atmakaraka and Putrakaraka are jointly or severally in the lagna or in the 5th house or occupy their exaltation or own sign or navamsa in aspect to a benefic planet.

  • Dr very well explained and easy to understand, mam it is not possible to do articles in kannada, bcoz mam I am a Dr by profession, and I can understand easily, but those who not understand English, if u will do articles in kannada, it is more helpful. Mam it is my suggestion only, it is left to u. Dr Jagdish Senior Physician and scientific astrologer.

  • Namaste mam. If Sun in Leo 27 degrees 43 min, and Moon in Leo 2 degrees 51 min, then shall we consider them as 8 signs and 30 degrees 34 min = 9 signs and 34 min and adding 93 degrees 20 min (3 signs 3 degrees and 20 min). So totally 9+3=12 signs and 3 degrees 34+20=54 min that means in aries 3 degrees 54 min. So we have to consider Aswani nakshatra 2nd paada. Please clear my doubt to my mail please mam🙏
