Tennis players are generally considered to be the biggest idiots in the professional sporting world, mainly due to their over-developed sense of self-entitlement. Funny epilogue to this incident: I was a Boilermaker from ’84-88. After Coach Knight threw the chair at this game at IU, we chained all of the coaches chairs together at the following matchup at Purdue. You could see him laughing out loud, all the way from the student section, when he noticed the chain. What a showman, all good cheer.
Even in this “Full Incident” article, I still have never seen the full incident. Bob Knight didn’t just randomly decide to berate the official. I’ve still never seen the precipitating incident … only the reaction by Coach Knight. I’ve seen these highlights a million times and not once have seen the events that led up to the outburst. Very unfortunate incident, however I went to one of his camps. Learned a tremendous amount and trimmed down and taught my 6 graders. We went on a streak of wins. Eventually was asked to coach the JV high school team but unfortunately didn’t have the time. Again unfortunate- a great coach who will always be remembered for this.
I was at the game (graduated ’85). It was against arch-rival PU. Tough season. They should show the play that got him irate – Marty Simmons had the ball and a PU guy fell on top of him. Ref called the foul on Marty. The next morning we were reading the paper and noticed they were making a big deal out of the “chair throwing incident”. The chair throwing didn’t seem like that big of a deal – it was the fact that he got kicked out of the game that was a big deal! It took 3 technicals to get kicked out and the chair was only 1 of the 3 (the 2nd, mind you). IU lost the game and later lost in the NIT Championship. There were high hopes for the ’85 team after knocking out Michael Jordan (in his final college game) and getting to the Elite 8 the previous year. The team won the NCAA Championship 2 years later. PU’s Coach Keady is the only coach to have a winning record against Bobby (assuming more than a few games played). They became (and are) good friends since retirement.
I remember when this happened, I was a senior in high school and co-captain on the basketball team. So many coaches during that time followed the Bob Knight approach of yelling and berating kids, it was not cool. My high school coach thankfully was not like that but I had summer basketball camp coaches who were and it was not enjoyable, although in retrospect I learned a little self-discipline that I otherwise would not have received as a kid.
Here’s the thing, folks: As funny as this moment is — and it IS hilarious, mind you — Bob Knight was always willing to stand up for his players. He made have supplied them with tough love just a bit too much, and he was quite nasty and harsh. But if you were a player who proved yourself to Bob Knight, he was in your corner for life.
Believe it or not this was the first time I heard about Bobby Knight. I was only 14 years old when this incident occurred and it was reported by CBS during halftime of a college basketball game I was perusal that same week. My initial reaction to what Bobby Knight did was OMFG! I really thought he was going to get fired for doing that but I did not know at that time that he was already an established and highly successful coach and had 2 national championship teams by that time. As I got to know Bobby Knight more and more I grew to respect him as a coach and person. You may not always agree with some of his behaviors but he ran a successful basketball program the right way and his players graduated.
THIS is the moment when college basketball had an opportunity to send a message and stop his embarrassingly out of control behavior, but the Big Ten suspended him for ONE GAME. He literally heaved a spinning metal object that could have gouged an eye of one of the group of photographers that it eventually struck. I watched in slow-motion to see where he was looking when he released the chair – right at the ref. What if he’d actually hit the ref and player? He was 100% out of control and could have hurt someone. That behavior today would end a career and possibly result in criminal prosecution. All for a game involving dribbling a ball. 🤡
Same event, different year: I was in 5-6th grade playing travel team basketball (around 2003-2004). In my rural part of Central Illinois basketball was the ultimate sport for kids that age, football programs hadn’t quite developed yet to the point of being ultra-competetive. We’re playing a fairly good team on their home court, not getting any calls in our favor and a ton of blatant calls going for the home team. Our coach gets in the refs’ faces like Bobby would do; scream, holler, the whole package. Not to mention our away crowd was bigger than the opponent’s home crowd. Coach finally catches a T for his words and goes into hulk mode. Starts screaming, goes over to the bench and picks up a folding chair and throws it across the court. Refs automatically eject him from the game and the assistant coaches for the remainder of the game (about 3 quarters). We went on to win by a pretty big margin and I left with one of the best basketball memories I’ve ever had in my life. I always reflect back on Bobby Knight because our coach used his playbook almost exclusively so I knew this incident had to have inspired him.
My father-in-law hates Bob Knight. But, his players graduated, and he never had problems with the NCAA over recruiting issues. If you are an AD, and your head basketball coach wins game with players who graduate, snd the NCAA is not investigating, problems like a short fuse that leads to chair tossing are are not significant.
Bobby had such a great basketball mind. Guy waa basically a basketball genius…but in my opinion his wins don’t reflect how bad of a coach he really was. His antics quit producing final four appearances and he diddnt change. Hey throws a chair and the crowd cheers…they created a animal. Everyone is misundertanding whats happened here, its nothing about the game. First he didnt want to sit on the chair, at 0:40 he is saying I want to sit on the floor, then at 0:49 he is saying that ok I can either sit over there or up there or mayber over there. Then at 1:00 the referee comes and ask so you want to sit over there? But the coach responds no now I want to sit on the floor over here and then the referee goes to ask someone in the crowd if they’d give up their seat.
I live in Bloomington. I remember the chair incident. I remember him kicking his son Pat in the shin for making a bad pass. He choked a guy at a restaurant. He assaulted a student for calling him “Knight”, instead of Coach Knight. There were several more altercations that I don’t remember the details of. He definitely had some issues. He was just becoming more and more of a liability for the university and had to go. That being said, I highly doubt IU will ever again have a basketball coach as good as Bob Knight was.

Also I looked like a homeless person because I was working at the time as a tree trimmer and you dress in ratty clothes to do that sort of work.
