Priests in Eastern Catholic Churches are not allowed to marry, but married men may be ordained as priests. In all but two Eastern Catholic Churches, married men may be ordained to the priesthood. The Catholic Church considers celibacy a discipline rather than a doctrine, and some Eastern-rite Catholics allow for the priestly ordination of married men. Some married priests from the East have been assigned to serve parishes in the West, while others have traveled to the East to be ordained.
While most Eastern Catholic Churches admit married men to ordination as priests, some have adopted mandatory clerical celibacy, such as in the Latin Church. Married men are allowed to become priests in the Eastern Rite of the Catholic Church and in the Orthodox Church. Protestant and Anglican Churches also allow a married priesthood.
In Eastern Catholic churches, a married priest is one who married before being ordained. The Catholic Church considers the law of clerical celibacy to be discipline, not a doctrine. While married men can be ordained as deacons and priests, only celibate men are ordained to the episcopate.
The Vatican has lifted its ban on the ordination of married men to the priesthood in Eastern Catholic churches outside their traditional territories. No priest can get married in the Catholic Church, and never has been allowed to do so. In the main, Eastern Rites have ordained married men, but certain Eastern-rite Catholics allow ordination of married men. Pope Francis has approved lifting the ban on the ordination of married men to the priesthood in Eastern Catholic Churches outside their traditional territories. In Eastern Christianity, a dual vocation to marriage and priesthood is seen as a call “to love more”.

📹 Married Priests in the Catholic Church? | EWTN News In Depth October 6, 2023
Yes, some Catholic priests are married. Correspondent Roselle Reyes explains how some men are able to be married and a …
The Latin Church had married priests until the 12th century. The Orthodox Churches always had married priests. The tradition of married priests is far older than celibate priests. Religious priests living in community are celibate, with community support. Diocesan priests living alone face tremendous isolation. It is not healthy and we have seen the results. Married diocesan priests bring great life experience to the people they serve.
Ancient Christendone there are consist of 5 ancient patriachal territory ROME, ANTIOCH SYRIA, JERUSALEM, CONSTANTINOPLE, ALEXANDRIA EGYPT these ancient patriarchal church has their apostolic origin each of them has their own ecclesiastical law and custom in their sacred liturgy in biblical bases the other apostles has given Christ full authority to govern according to their jurisdiction mathew 18:18 ROME IN VATICAN IS THE CENTER OF CHRISTENDOME, BUT THEIR AUTHORITY TO GOVERN THE CHURCH IN CONNECTION OF FAITH AND MORALS ONLY. HOWEVER, CLERICAL CELBACY IS NOT PART OF THEM BCOZ IT IS A DISCIPLINE BELONG TO ECLESIASTICAL LAW THATS WHY EASTERN FATHERS IS ALLOWING MARRIED BEFORE ORDINATION. 5:17 5:17
Well explained by EWTN. There are married priests in the eastern rite of the Catholic Church (Greek Catholic, not to be confused with the Orthodox churches). They are in communion with Rome. We need to remember that the Catholic Church is not just the church of the Latin Rite. They are both Catholic. Both are under obedience to the Pope. However, I believe we should maintain celibacy in the Latin Rite.
This priest is right. Married Catholic priests as a solution to the shortage to vocations of Holy Orders WILL NOT solve the shortage. And it will not solve the sexually abusive priests. Here’s what will: Holiness, prayer, fasting, attending Mass regularly, and participating in the sacraments. Also, having a strong laity that is there to remind the priests of their roles. Most sexual abuse against children statistically is committed by married men. This priest is right about the discipline of celibacy. Priests in the Latin Rite are committed to The Lord and the shepherding of their flock. A marriage can be a distraction. God Bless. Lord grant us holy priests and more religious vocations.
I am a Catholic from India. I want to say that a tradition of our church should not be changed according to the times. If priests are allowed to marry, it will never be possible to increase the number of priests. How many holy priests were there in the early churchThere will be divine calls from good families
1 Timothy 3:1-6 CPDV It is a faithful saying: if a man desires the episcopate, he desires a good work. Therefore, it is necessary for a bishop to be beyond reproach, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, gracious, chaste, hospitable, a teacher, not a drunkard, not combative but restrained, not quarrelsome, not covetous; but a man who leads his own house well, having children who are subordinate with all chastity. For if a man does not know how to lead his own house, how will he take care of the Church of God? He must not be a new convert, lest, being elated by pride, he may fall under the sentence of the devil. Deacons should be the husband of one wife, men who lead their own children and their own houses well. For those who have ministered well will acquire for themselves a good position, and much confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Catholic priests not allowed to marry started in 1123 to 1134AD due to corruption in church. Too many families who did not have the divine calling, were simply there for a better financial life, became priests. For 1123 years priests were married, as were some of the apostles. In Bible, Timothy 1 Tm 3:1-13, it permits bishops, priests, deacons to marry. What we should be looking at is a way to confirm divine calling to serve……
1 Corinthians 7:29, St. Paul advises that “those who have wives should live as if they do not”. This statement is part of a broader discussion where Paul emphasizes the urgency of living in a way that prioritizes devotion to the Lord, given the shortness of time. He encourages believers to focus on their spiritual commitments and not be overly concerned with worldly matters, including marital status. St. Paul’s advice is not meant to undermine the importance of marriage but to highlight the need for a balanced perspective where one’s relationship with God takes precedence.
There are, of course, already married Priests in the Catholic Church. Those who came in through the Anglican Ordinariate who were already married may remain married. For most of the history of the Catholic Church the secular clergy were married. The regular clergy were celibate. This still applies in the Eastern Church, of course.
There’s nothing more I would want but to see my husband back on the altar. If other men that are married and then turn catholic go on to become a priest, then catholic married priests should also be acknowledged. Right now IMO. the only way my husband would be welcomed back as a priest in the catholic religion, for us to get our marriage annulled. Then we would just live together.
Have we not seen the difficulties of married clergy in other faiths? Do we Catholics want to become so like them that the world can’t tell us apart? Will that stop the problems? I think not. Besides, are we not meant to worship God and serve Him? Through prayer, fasting and listening for His voice, He will lead us. Sadly, so many of us are behaving like wolves that we can’t hear the Lamb.😢
The celibacy rule was imposed on priests in the 1100s. Before this rule, diocesan priests could be married. Because most priests left their properties to their oldest sons, the church decreed at one of the councils that priests could no longer be married, and thus would leave all their wealth and property to the church. So the celibacy rule doesnt have anything to do with Jesus not being married. It was imposed for strictly financial reasons. Check out if you dont believe me😮😮 I was in the seminary back in the 1960s and thay told us celebacy was a “gift from God” What a crock!!!😢
Catholicism stands in Celibacy. Catholicism survives; Catholicism is alive; Catholicism is different from other sects in the world–it is because of the Eucharist and Celibacy life of Priests. Priests do not marry as Jesus did not marry; Priests live for the people and churches as Jesus lives for people and churches in the world. Priests marry Churches and they bear the Word of God to the people. Catholics follow many rites in Catholicism ( but each action shows the remembrance of Birth, Preaching, Death, and Resurrection of Christ)–it is only for the welfare of people as well as only for the Living Christ through Eucharist. Priests ( Celibacy) are Priests if they believe in the rites of Catholicism and The Ordination can not be taken away from them till their death.
Only those married priests crossing from Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist to Catholic can serve as married clergy. Its will not solve the priest shortage in the next generation (priests children are seldom priests) It will destroy the harmony and discipline within the religious orders where they hold all things in common. For example a married Franciscan friar. Does he receive the same stipend as a friar who is single? It is also hugely expensive tor the church if every married priests needs to be independently housed. These are the practical issues to consider before jumping on the bandwagon. I used to favour giving priests the choice because as they grow older they need a companion. But when i saw the chaos it will inflict on the religious orders i revert to the status quo.
Those 64% Catholics needs to review their Catholic faith. Btw The ewtn clearly stated here and if im gonna make it short, – Only the Eastern rites Catholic Priest Can marry “Before they are Ordained” not after. – Catholic Priest of The Roman/Latin/Western Rite cannot be married before and after Ordination they Have Vow of Celibacy. – those Legal Roman Catholic Priest That are already married before converting are Converts from Anglican church protestant Denomination if he is A priest there, they’re allowed to continue their ministry as a Catholic Priest. – last but not least additional, if a roman Catholic Man wants to enter priesthood but he is already married, He can only become a “Permanent deacon”(Obviously not a priest) under code of canon law 1031. Facts right there👆 That”s It GUYS let’s keep it that way. But on my personal opinion, its always better for a Priest to have strict celibacy i have a lot of reason one of them is, so that they can focus more on serving God and being a Priest and you cant have to Vocations at the same time, there only three Vocations in life Single, married and Celibacy/priesthood/Religious. No offense to my fellow Eastern rite catholic brothers, but You can’t have 2 at the same time like Being a priest and being married to a woman.
What about the financial implication of parishes now supporting the families of priests and all that entails. Further, being a husband and father is a full time duty and vocation. He must, in justice, choose his family before his parish. The face of the church in the West would change with married priests.
The church should aks Jesus in this question, not personal oppinions. Furthermore, it is not a kind act to say, other priests shuoldn’t marry, when you are not practicing celibacy. We need married priests, but not everyone, just as we don’t need bad priest in celibacy. Being a good priest doesn’t depend on this life status, it has nothing to do with it.
Is it a joke ? In France 2 over 3 married couple get divorced. Many problems of pédophilie inside families. By no way the solution. You add problem to problems. We want to solve the problems and not To make the situation worse. Priests need to live in a christian community not alone. They need to live by acts of fraternel friendship. They need to have a mature experience of life.
“There and back again” huh. Way to copy Tolkien. Stop spreading your Anglican errors to One True and Holy Catholic Church! The Church have already ordained Married men who wants to become Priests but ONLY If their wife is already not in this World. Allowing a Married man with a Living wife to be a Priest is like a husband with two wives. The CHURCH IS NOT POLYGAMOUS.
Who are we to judge a priest, I prefer a oerson to be honest. Is nothing wrong if he wants to be merried.. remember in a family no everybody is the same.. The Catholic church is the only true church and lets dont expect this huge church will have only saints regardless this priest is right we need more kids in this world .Glory to Jesus our Lord and saviours .. i admire him because being merried is not easy 😂😂 the rest of the priest are smart 😂
In the UK we have married Catholic priest from the Anglican Communion, the ones I have met are excellent priest with a completely different understanding of life. To have mature Catholic men ordained priest would certainly be a progressive step forward for the Church. My prayers to the Holy Spirit. Amen 🙏🙏🙏
What does people make a big deal of this, howmnay prophets were merried and still keep in toush with the almighty stop having such a old fashion mentality my goodness no even Jesus judge like that. just follow Jesus regardless a priest or no priest just love thw Lord follow tye 10 commandment and love one another ..
