In Skyrim, Which Spells Do You Begin With?

In Skyrim, there are dozens of spells available for magically-inclined characters. Most spells are learned by reading Spell Tomes, with Flames being the most powerful spell. Characters start with two spells: Flames, a gout of fire that does 8 points per second, and Healing, which heals the caster. There are six Magic skills in Skyrim, and most Dragonborn players will want to invest time training one or more of these skills.

To equip a spell, open the Magic Menu and find the spell you want to equip. You can equip a spell in one hand or both hands, or both. The best spells in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim vary from player to player, but certain spells are universally recognized as all-powerful. The schools of magic in Skyrim correspond to their types of abilities.

The most powerful spell in Conjuration is Dead Thrall, which can bring back one zombie permanently until it dies at a certain point. Every race begins with Healing and Flames, and every race starts with Flames and Healing. At the beginning of Skyrim, only two spells are available: Flames and Healing. Other spells must be learned through the School of Magic.

Alternation, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, and Restoration are the five main magic schools in Skyrim. Destruction – Chain Lightning is one of the most powerful spells in the game.

  • Wow this article really blew up! Just wanted to say I’ve been getting a lot of comments about why I didn’t do this exploit or that exploit, and the reason why is because newcomers and those looking for a refresher do not care about exploits and just want to play the game normally. I am also someone that dislikes exploits and intentionally did not put any in the article. Just wanted to say this because I’ve been getting comments for the past 5 months about it which bothered me because I felt many people missed the point of the article.

  • My tips: 1. At around level 5-10 take a stable ride to Markarth, then do the Molag Bal quest (find the haunted house) to get the Mace of Molag Bal. This mace is a very effective starter weapon and looks cool. 2. Any level: recommended for lowlevels Go to Farengar Secret-fire and get the spell tome for Soul Trap. Then, find an animal like a fox or even a mudcrab and spam soul trap. Wait an hour if your magicka is depleted. Repeat until you are level 100 in Conjuration. Then go to Winterhold and speak to Phinis. He will give you a quest where you need to summon a daedra to collect a sigil stone. Use a bow and arrow to kill the daedra if not. Then get the sigil stone and bring it to Phinis. He will return it and what you can do is go to the Midden (far left from the entrance, looks like a trapdoor) and then find the Atronach forge. Search up a guide for this as you will need certain ingredients. Once you have the ingredients put them in the Offering Box and pull the pulley. If you’ve done it correctly, a daedric weapon or armorpiece will spawn. Unless you have done Daedra heart + Greater soul gem + Iron sword, then you will instead get a random weapon or armor with a random enchantment. Save before doing the random recipe just in case you get anything unwanted. 3. Common knowledge: don’t get too cocky and go to a giant or a dragon at a lowlevel. I beg you. Unless you have a strong bow and arrow or Fireball do not even attempt it. You absolutely will be demolished.

  • As a weirdo who never really played Skyrim until the Anniversary edition, I really appreciate you mentioning Golden Hills Plantation and the Tundra Homestead. All the added housing is pretty great (especially because I think they all were made by one of the best modders in the Bethesda modding world, Elianora) but those two are especially good. My warrior Nord, Njordmann the Nord Man, operates out of the one in the mountains between Markarth and Falkreath, which is basically Jorrvaskr turned 90 degrees. This is a great guide! I haven’t done much exploring of the immediate area between Helgen and Riverwood. Njordy might do some extra poking around next time I play, particularly to find that bandit camp with the treasure map.

  • Once exiting the Helgen cave go southeast to the main road toward the alchemist shack/Riften. Not far down that road there will be ambushed Kajits with a skill book and a little further on North side of the road (under a ledge with icicles) another skill book. There are only low level enemies up to the Alchemist shack. Grab a few Scaly mushrooms while you’re there. Both skill books will be gone once you go to Riverwood.

  • Before you leave the cave you can level up several times. You get behind whoever your following and sneak attack them, you keep doing it. You have to keep an eye on their health and wait ever now and to then for them to heal. You level up mostly in sneak but also whatever weapon class you’re using. You can realistically level up until you’re tired of it. But of course the higher you go the longer it takes. I usually go to level 9 or so you get there fairly quick

  • Many thanks, Im a veteran Skyrim gamer but haven’t played in a few years so thought I’d give myself a quick refresher which this guide did well. For those folk who eant early exploits I would say, if you haven’t played before just relax into it and don’t push yourself too hard. Skyrim is an individual experience not a competitive one. Once you become familiar enough with the game and things become familiar and grindy, then consider using the exploits to speed things up.

  • My way to save time after you leave Riverwood is if the items are not crafting/leveling related don’t pick it up unless it’s worth 100 gold per 1 pound of weight. Ingredients for potions are your real source of money. Put a couple of points in stronger potions and experiment with ingredients to find the most valuable recipes and you will have more gold than you can spend right away. Always buy iron ore from everyone all the time. That way when you get the transmute ore spell you will be able to make lots of gold ore for blacksmith power leveling.

  • just a note on smithing the gold, its worth noting that smithing, enchanting, and alchemy all level based on the value of the product, so making jewelry with gems will be better than without, meaning depending on the gems you have it might be better to make silver rather than gold to mix with the more common gems, furthermore, if you only have gold, its better to make gold rings than gold necklaces because it makes two rings, and together theyre worth more than the necklaces

  • The thing with Goldenhills Plantation is that it’s possible to acquire the farm, set up the farm in a specific way, do a few “sleep & harvest” repeats, and you’d have enough ingredients to power-level Alchemy to 100, granting a ridiculous amount of valuable options to sell… all in less than 90 minutes of play.

  • When you get your first lock picks, unlock all of the cells in the torture room and the hallway that follows. Sometimes you can level up you lock picking just once before you pick up your first bow. The torturer’s hood (which you can only get if you run w Ralof, since with Hadvar he heals too quickly) is also bugged so that it levels up with you. It is a light piece of armor that is always 1 armor rating above the best current piece available to your level. Aside from the first bandit camp mentioned in the article, when the road out of Helgen’s cave bends to the right, go left over the hill and find another bandit camp set up under a cliff edge by the bees nest. Three archer bandits will show up after you loot their chest but they also have some good meat and alchemy ingredients too. Very useful if playing survival but can also be a challenge. After that, I usually head for the bandit camp mentioned in the article then the Shrine of Talos. Unless you are using the Unofficial Patch, the thief stone does NOT cover Bow skills. There is a bug that put Bow under the Warrior stone. So you either want to choose Mage or Warrior, unless you want to level up sneak and lock picking/ pickpocket earlier but it will put you at a disadvantage in combat as you level. That potion of lock picking after leaving Bleak Falls Barrow is usually a random low level skill potion. I have also picked up a potion of invisibility there before instead. Interesting that Kaj highwayman was wearing the torturer’s hood for you.

  • The first time I played this game I beat it with sword and shield on expert. It was fun but this time around I’m doing a full on destruction/alteration magr on adept who doesn’t use weapons or armor (only robes). I’m having way more fun this time around. I used to think adept was too easy, but it’s not. The higher difficulties (expert and onward) don’t really make the game more challenging. I mean.. they do. But for the wrong reasons. On adept there’s a lot of room to experiment with your build and you dont have to worry about doing the maximum amount of damage all the time. You can play the game.. like a role playing game. You can do.. what you want. On higher difficulties I’d probably need to use a full set of the best light armor I could get, plus some flesh spell, plus enchantments on my armor that decrease destruction cost. It gets out of hand rather fast. (The default difficulty the developers intended is the most fun way to play the game? Imagine that. Seems so obvious in hindsight)

  • This will be my 2nd ish play through. I started Skyrim after my buddy had begged me to play for years. I have a save at his house but as we’ve grown up we don’t get to see eachother as much. I didn’t want to download it at home because it had become his and I thing. We’re the only nerds in the group who still love Skyrim. We’d get together and play for hours taking turns defeating enemies and laughing about how much I pickpocketed and seeing those stats. I really miss it and now that Im downloading it today I wanted to get a refresher on the beginning of the game. What felt kinda sad to make a new save has turned into excitement after perusal this article. Thank you bringing back the Skyrim spark.

  • Thank you for making this article, I never played skyrim on console and I got it on my pc recently and have been playing it. I loved the fallout series so I thought there was no way I couldn’t like this. Now I have an upperhand and a general start in the beginning with new characters. Thank you so much again

  • I bought this game about 6 months ago & never even inserted the disc. Not because i didn’t want to, but having 3 consoles plus Gamesticks’ & Emulators on my phone & tanlet, i wanted to see the gameplay, and you, sir, did a great job! I was going to add it to a bundle I’m about to sell, but I knew I should at least try it. Now I wanna beat it!

  • What a great article….thank you….naturally I subbed immediately 😊…I came late to the party, have only played Skyrim since last August …..but have fallen in love…..just a mention…if one has anniversary edition…the warrior house can be gotten by killing the warrior that lives there….completely furnished and child ready. It’s a free furnished place until you get money for other places you may want. Golden Hills and the Stones of Barenziah will guarantee financial freedom in the game. My first character was broken…I contracted Vampire Dz., I couldn’t get rid of it because Fallion died. Then I got hit with a very OP dragon that I couldn’t beat or run from all under lvl 15. Awful…..but I learned very quickly to become a werewolf asap to avoid the vampire issue. I pretty much follow your route at beginning of game. I just love articles like these and sharing tips and tricks with others. Thank you for a great useful article.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌸

  • Races have very diference in skyrim, in early and late game.Orc power is op in early and late to warrior build. Breton have 25 mag resistance but your size is very small, the smaller race have more sneak vantages, but run walk slowly .High elf in teory is better mage because 50+magick,but your high size do more stun in enemys with weapons, and run walk more faster,is good class to creat warrior.

  • Played Skyrim 10+ times all the way through + side quests and never messed with alchemy outside of grinding it to 100 on my maxed out player. Started a new game on the Switch yesterday (first character on there) using this guide and it is AWESOME! I had around 3k gold by the time I unlocked the ability to buy a house, and am currently over 5k at level 7, saving up the 7500 for Tundra Homestead because I already got a house to store stuff for free, which I also highly recommend! It’s called Goldenhills Plantation, located near Rorikstead/Lover Stone. You have to complete a quest called “Unquiet Dead,” which requires some exploration, but I’m sure there are guides somewhere if you dont wanna figure it out. Well, I’m on my way to see the Greybeards! Thank you, and make sure to wear your knee guards!

  • 10:40 A much better way to use the Transmuted Ore is to make both Silver and Gold Ingots based on what gemstones you’ve managed to acquire (mining regularly produces them as a byproduct. Use the gems to make various kinds of jeweled rings and necklaces (which are worth more gold, and thus give more smithing xp) and sell them off for lots of money. (Note that to make Silver Ingots you need 2 Silver Ores and the spell prefers to convert Silver Ore to Gold Ore over converting Iron Ore to Silver Ore, so you need to drop/put away Silver Ore before casting it again so you can convert more Iron Ore to Silver Ore and actually make Silver Ingots).

  • Ugh, after playing Valheim for 1000+ hrs and it Corrupted all my saves and not about to start over I thought about trying Skyrim for a first but it’s so different. Valheim is mainly Solo no NPC, very little reading so when I started Skyrim I skipped so much. Guess I better start over. Loved the Witcher 3, hopefully its something like that? Great article and thank’s for the Tips.

  • I’ve platinumed every from soft game on PS5 & PS4, got platinum in both newer God of wars and now I’ve finally decided to “bore” myself with seeing the hype around Skyrim …. And I’m ADDICTED!!! 60 hours in and 5 hours in, I literally gave the guy his Golden claw after getting the “stone”, a carrier delivered a certain “summons” and 55 hours later, I’ve used the Horse carriage to take me to every location it goes, so I can fast travel and PICKPOCKET EVERYTHING, gaining A BUNCH OF LEVELS, my Encumbrance up 150+ and I’m still trying to Pickpocket a GIANT near two wooly mammoths, but they one-shot me every time! 😭😂

  • Every time i play i religously clear the bandit camp on the left after exiting helgen, after following the path to a shrine there is a dead Thalmor with random enchanted gear. obviously the guardian stone is next followed by either embershard mine for the early levelling and iron for transmutting to gold later. and of course you have to get Fandael for easy Archery levels.

  • I’ve just started a Breton. Years ago on an old playthrough I went Nord though. I think I am aiming roughly for one handed weapon paired with a destruction spell for the most part but also able to switch up spells in that other hand. Not heavy armor, light armor, but I’m not sure yet, I have mage robes ready to equip if I need the edge. My last Nord guy was more a warrior with mage skills, but this ones more leaning the other way around, investing in mage primarily but having the combat skills and abilities too. Something I realised the other day though…I’ve never actually finished the main story line! I am going for it this time

  • Something to note is the lover stone does NOT stack with the well rested exp bonus but the Guardian stones (thief/warrior/mage) do so it’s a bit easier to pick one to focus on first and swap as necessary or get the tethering crown and store the lover stone ability in that as the crown with the ability will stack with well rested I beleive

  • I played this on 360 but might have to get it again for PS5. I had the special edition with all the DLC’s. I played that game for almost 2 years. I wish they would remake the second one. It was the first RPG I ever played and probably didn’t do all the side quests or searched the world like I should have. The ambient sounds in dungeons and locations were amazing especially when the machines were active and moving around.

  • If you’re a collector, clear out Silent Moons Camp before level 7, so that you can get the iron variants of the Lunar enchanted weapons. From level 7 onwards, these items will become steel quality. The unoficial patch however changes this in that iron and steel variants will spawn randomly whenever the cell resets.

  • Another thing I would recommend is getting the ebony blade as soon as you get to whiterun, grab a wooden plate before you get there, by the jarl hang a left and go down the stairs open the door then there will be a room with a old wooden door jump on the crates and get stuck and wooden plate through the wall

  • only thing i disagree with is that the race you chose doesnt matter. i had an official skyrim book when i was a kid, and each race does have differences, whether it be that they are stronger, have more magica to begin with, or able to breathe underwater for longer. Def look into all the races before starting your builds as it can be more useful, however you can of course do any buildd with any race but if your wanting to be idk more precise or legit? its good to check your abilities with the race you chose.

  • Pro tip: if you have the Dragonborn expansion, do not read any skill books until you complete the Black Book quest in Bloodskaal Barrow. One of the reqard choices from that quest is to receive an extra skill point from reading skill books. I always wait to read skill books until after completing that quest so I receive 2 instead of 1 points.

  • Don’t forget the fishing skill. Down the slope to the river vext to the guardian stones is a guy fishing. Next to him is a fishing rod and book you can take that costs nothing. Every water area that has fishing equipment on the floor is a fishing location. Fish can be cooked or used in alchemy and you stand a chance of one of the many useful rings or artifacts with an enchantment/ Worth a try even if you don’t go big on the fishing skill.

  • I’ve been torn between making a Redguard on ESO or continuing on with Skyrim, and it bugs the crap out of me that I can’t make up my mind. If I chose to make the Redguard, I don’t know what class to make him nor even a name (although I might pay homage to the Redguard guy in Skyrim’s Dark Brotherhood, MAYBE.). But the cool thing is, I know what I want to do on Skyrim – try to find a jewelry piece with 100% disease resistance and disenchant it to put THAT enchantment on a silver chest piece – hence I have the Anniversary Edition upgrade of Skyrim. I don’t go into Solitude until level 20 or a little later. I’ve had yet to do the Morthal quest but yesterday on ESO, I started (again) Clockwork City. Debating whether or not to get another of those test dummies from the quest that can start there in CC. The possibilities I tell ya. I just hate being easily confused with what to do.

  • i avoid returning the dragonstone to Farengar and last night, i hit level 10 and saw a random npc in Riverwood and he looked like a vampire so i ran into the inn, waited a couple of seconds, ran outside again and free travelled to Whiterun. The same npc was at Whiterun and he looked at me and started walking towards me again so i sprinted into the meadery, saved and quit for the night. Skyrim vampires only wear dark robes don’t they? the random npc looked like a Dunmer or an Orsimer in normal Skyrim npc clothing

  • Here’s a tip: do not abuse the “restoration loop” glitch. It totally wrecked my save file and made everything in game glitched out; like my armor randomly would kill me if I removed it (sometimes), or my alchemy table refusing to go any higher than “+4% bonus thing” rather than “+120%” etc. There were so many bugs after I tried the Resto Loop, definitely not worth it

  • I bought a switch for my kids (and myself) and this is one of the games that I would like to play again. I enjoyed playing this on pc years ago but stopped just a month or so after realizing that it is this game that was causing me dizziness and nausea. I wonder if it will be the same with switch… I don’t play too much games anymore. I just pick the simple ones to play when I’m bored. You see… I used to be a gamer, but then I took an arrow in the knee 😂

  • 12:50 Goldenhills becomes even more gamebrrwleaking when you combine it with East Empire Expansion. Sure, they’ll only give you 10% of the price of all he potions you give them, but those 10.000+ Septims potions are easily made and no Merchant in Skyrim can afford them. In testing my character gained 66.000.000 Septims for selling around 500 of these bad boys.

  • I always choose a standing stone for a class im not playing. Because….say im a warrior. Those skills will level quickly. But if you arent sneaking or using magic as much….its a good boost to level them quicker as they’d level slower otherwise. So i play a 2 handed warrior. But i keep destruction magic as my secondary for long range attacks. Maybe some conjuration to distract stronger enemies. Now im using magic far less so ill choose the mage stone so that it will level my destruction and conjuration little faster and doesnt get left behind as my 2 handed and heavy armorr skills rapidly increase just by using those skills more.

  • I now think that Orc is the best race. Bersker Rage is boost sneak attacks and can stack on other powers, such as Dragon Aspect. Berserker Rage lasts for 60 seconds, but for 90 seconds if vampire necromage. As the semi-talest race the orc runs almost as fast as the high elf. In Surival Mode: resist Fatigue and Hunger by 15%. +10 Warmth.

  • Here is the best free advice for getting the best start in Skyrim: load your game up with mods…yes mods, even if it is the first time playing the game, especially if on xbox or pc!! Also, get the AE version of the game to have all the creation club content. The following mods are TOP tier and a MUST have in your load order: Cheat Room; Twin Souls Expanded Levels (so you can have 10 conjured dremora lords on the battlefield at the same time fighting your battles: trust me, it’s hilarious); AGmods Skills and Item Editor (where you can instantly level your character to max and walk away with a shite ton of perk points); Enemy Health Indicators (puts a neat red meter above enemy’s heads); anything from Divergence (to spiff up textures and colors); A Quality World Map Vivid (makes the game’s good map waaaay better); Six Enchants Per Item (no longer by chained to only having 2 enchantments on gear); Weightless Ultimate FULL (everything in the game now no longer has weight to it, even the dreaded dragon bones, so lug all the crap in the game around with you); No Magicka Cost For Any Spell (literally spam blasted flames from the very start of the game, even affects other spell mods). That’s just a sample actually of the top tier mods you should get, but for sure, start with these!!! Enjoy blowing of Skyrim!

  • I don’t know how to feel about this guide. First of all: The best warrior class is either Orc or Breton. Orc should be self explanatory, Breton is good because they have some pretty hefty magic reduction by default. For an Assassin Orc is also a pretty good choice if you plan to dual wield daggers. Imperials would be a great choice for a Thief, as you find more gold than other races. Also, as a beginner I do NOT recommend to loot everything you come across, because this will just lead to one hell of a mess in your inventory. Looting ingredients only really matters if you’re going for alchemy – which new players generally don’t do. Just pick up items with decent value (50+ gold) which dont weigh too much. As a Warrior I’d suggest going for Onehanded or Twohanded as well as Light Armor or Heavy Armor. As a Mage you should go for Destruction and Alteration. As an Assassin / Thief you should focus on Sneak and Onehanded / Marksman. Obviously smithing, enchanting and alchemy can make pretty much any character overpowered, but for a first playthrough I would disregard those for the most part – maybe with the exception of smithing. You can always start to include these skills to your build, once you’re more familiar with the game. And if you then start to pick up / buy the items you need, you should be good. No need to fill your inventory from the very beginning.

  • Thank you so much!! I started playing article games a couple of months ago (Well, for the first time since like, sega genesis) and I had the good/bad luck of finding exactly the perfect game for me right away! (Hogwarts: legacy) Unfortunately, I could not seem to find one single other game that absorbed me and that didn’t annoy me with excessive dialogue or too-bright colors, but I had literally no gamer knowledge to even explain to people what kind of game I even wanted! LOL anyway, started this one yesterday evening around 5:30. I think I’ve got 12 hours in it already. 🤣

  • I’m new to Skyrim and feel very grateful to be playing the Anniversary Edition (with all the mods) for the first time. I see a lot of mention about how mods were really memorable or enhanced the experience for OG players. My question is, when should I use mods? Or should I have my playthrough be just the vanilla game first?

  • skyrim should be played as an adventure where you discover things as you go and explore the world this way you will have your own unique experience and progression and its not worth ruining that in exchange for efficiency imo i see some people with very specific strats to acquire op stuff early but thats not fun and not the way the game is meant to be played i think

  • While you can play any build on any race I wouldn’t go so far as to say race doesn’t matter at all. Some of the racial powers like berserker rage, highborn, or histskin can be really strong on the right build. Also saving your gems to craft more expensive jewelry can help you level smithing faster and get a bit more value out of them when you sell em later. Finally my personal number one tip is to never neglect the restoration tree. It’s useful on literally every build and you get a healing spell right at the start of the game so there’s no reason not to use it.

  • HELP, I’m completely lost. How do missions work. Are they called quests? And can you go in whatever order you want, I just did a quest or a mission and went through it all and left the dougen then I looked at quest and it said I needed to find something in there. So do I now have to completely reduce that quest. I’m confused right now

  • I’m brand new to Skyrim, but i started playing ESO with a friend a few months ago. I’m playing on PS4, how do i play in 3rd person? I’ve googled, and the info i got there was to push in on R2 & L3, but that does not put me in 3rd person. To be fair i haven’t made it out of the tutorial portion of the game yet, so maybe that’s why? Any help would be great. TIA

  • I have been looking at this game for switch but its alot of money for a game that im not even sure i would play cause i tried dragons dogma or somethin and wasent into it for some reason i do like assasins creed the rebel collection not so much though im thinking about getting either this one or hogwatz
