In Tales Of Arise, What Does Magic Charge Mean?

Rinwell, a ranged caster in Tales of Arise, can cast stronger artes by charging them up. These can be saved up and used to create attack combos. You can also charge up the same arte and create high-level spells, giving you freedom to combine and experiment different combinations.

To activate Rinwell’s Magic Charge, hold down X, Square, or Triangle when casting and press R1 when the circle at the bottom of the screen is full. Rinwell will slap her book and a bright light will come from it. The 15 from warrior/magic affects your base stats, stacking multiplicatively with the counterattack damage. The damage boost from using warrior/magic is closer to +40.

In Tales of the Rays, a modified version of Magic Charging is present, allowing Rinwell to simultaneously chant the same spell twice, but not two different ones. This results in the casting spell’s base version, followed by the magic’s base version.

Magic Charge has different effects depending on the title in which it appears. In Tales of the Abyss, it increases F.ATK by 10 for 20 seconds. In Tales of Arise, certain shielded characters can hold down their attack button to power up their next spell. Magic Charge allows certain shielded characters to hold down their attack button after casting a spell to make it stronger or add additional effects.

The AI will often charge artes itself, sometimes using high-tier spells it can only get via charging for the time being. Rinwell’s Perk: Magic Charging allows her to cast stronger artes by charging them up, save them up, and use them to create attack combos.

  • Just gonna add in a list of Rinwell’s combo spells that I know that weren’t gone over: Maelstrom: Air Thrust x2 + Spread (Water) – don’t remember how this one presents. Possibly just a stream of air and water towards the enemy? Shooting Star: Freeze Lancer + Holy Lance (Light) – is a big ball that slowly comes down from the sky. Cool looking, but use on enemies that are gonna be staying put cuz it’s slow moving. Explosion: Burning Strike x3 (Fire/Light – pretty sure for the sake of her affinities and whatnot it’s light but for enemies it counts as fire damage) Meteor Storm: Burn Strike + Divine Saber Divine Saber, Tidal Wave, Cyclone, and all the ones in between the base spell (thunder blade, spread, and air thrust) you’ll obtain through leveling or through side quests. That’s how you put them together to make other spells since if you were to charge up to freeze lancer then use thunder blade it would do those two and you couldn’t charge thunder blade further. Shooting Star, Maelstrom, and Meteor Storm are special in that the only way to cast them is through her perk – you won’t get them as their own spell.

  • Man I played with Rinwell the entire game after she joined the party. The one thing I hate is that everyone’s Mystic’s arts interrupts her casting or cancels her spells while they are on the field. So her whole deal is timing. Thankfully her casting gets faster around lvl 70 but still can be canceled or interrupted be her teammates.

  • Thanks for the article. You say that Rinwell doesn’t play much in the air but I found this information on Reddit which seems to contradict this: “Not sure how the endgame looks like but at my current lvl ~36 I main Rinwell that basically doesn’t cast. She can double jump into the air and hang there and sustain spamming Celestial Hammer/Subzero Confinement basically forever while avoiding vast majority of attacks and priming for boosts nonstop. Most fights are now a joke, ground based bosses AI just doesn’t know what to do and will mostly run around under her and for high flying ones she can spam Razor Cyclone/Electric Discharge and be even more deadly. Just pumping her pure offensive stats, she doesn’t need anything else really since she hangs there out of reach most of the fight. Hope this will remain viable till the end, I love it.” Thoughts?

  • Good guide, but if I may make a complaint about spoilers. This is a beginners guide, so for people who just started playing the game. I just reached the 3rd area and hearing about this fantastic lord that’s around here. Being curious as to who this guy is and if he’s playing pretend or not was a part of the fun and mystery. You totally ruined this for me by already confirming he’s gonna be in the party so I already know he’s gonna be the nice guy all the townspeople say he is. So you can imagine I won’t be perusal any more of your articles because I don’t want another mystery being ruined. Watch the spoilers. Very important.

  • This game sucks, unless you buy the DLC this game is a slog to get through, the plot is good the commentary’s on slavery and it’s varying degrees are interesting but that’s where it stops, combat inevitably turns into a fireworks show character arch’s are revisited at thousand yard points at a time some of the dialogue is either out of place for the context of what’s happened or is just plain weird and it becomes narratively boring, the extrinsic motivation can (for me at least) burn out after Ganabelt, and the intrinsic motivation I.e side quest, mini game, and the combat itself can become numbing, boring, or down right tiresome when you have to go here or there to fight or find enemies or items, realize that the only way to make a good amount of money is via the one mini-game in the game, all enemies in the game don’t stagger from your hits unless you break there guard and are basically tanks unless you are over leveled, these problems, some of them anyway are fixed with DLC, hence why the game sucks, if it where just aesthetic DLC’s the game would still be bad but at least it would be just bad, but the fact that I’d have to buy something on top of what I just grabbed just to make it fun, well you already know, hopefully the next tales of game will do better
