In Witchcraft, What Are Spirits?

Witchcraft is a term used to describe the use of supernatural or occult powers to inflict harm on others. It involves the summoning of evil spirits and demons to do harm to others, often through the use of familiar spirits. These spirits can take the form of animals or human-like beings. They are believed to assist witches in their magical endeavors, spells, and rituals.

Wiccan deities are the heart and soul of our religion, and the rituals and spells we create involve deities. The element of Spirit, often overlooked but immensely powerful, encapsulates the divine connection within the witch’s craft. Spirit unifies Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, elevating them. A witch’s familiar spirit is believed to be her “aid” in her magical endeavors, spells, and rituals.

Historically, witchcraft involved the use of supernatural or magical powers to inflict harm upon members of a group. Witchcraft was linked to religion, with the medieval Church having symbols created to protect themselves from evil spirits. Owning familiars, or supernatural spirits, was common among accused witches.

While talk of spirits and witchcraft sounds fantastical to modern people, it is important to understand that there are spiritual forces working to destroy one’s life, ministry, and future. Scripture teaches that individuals are in a spiritual war, and local witches continue to remind people of the age-old phenomenon of greed.
