Is Checking Your Horoscope A Sin?

Horoscopes are not a reliable source of information, as they are based on astrology, which is not supported by the Bible. Instead, the Bible encourages us to trust in God and His plans for our lives. The 12 zodiac signs include Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

The Bible warns Christians against making decisions based on astrology or looking at them to gain knowledge. The main concern is when Christians look to astrology for advice over God, as it takes their eyes and trust away from God. Most Christians only glance at a few aspects of astrology, such as the zodiac signs and the practice of astrology by the magi during Jesus’ time.

There is no biblical evidence that God has given authority to the stars or astrologists. Pursuing predictions about our destiny or personality takes power from God and gives it to something other than God, which is biblically sinful. God will not speak through horoscopes, as they are not a Christian invention and are not written by or for Christians.

Using astrology and horoscopes is thus a sin, and Christians are called to break the shackles of sin and replace it with obedience to God (Romans 6:15-16). Astrology as a form of divination is expressly forbidden in Scripture (Deuteronomy 18:10-14).

When a Christian is baptized, they are signed with the sign of the Cross, which guides them. According to the CCC, all forms of divination—including consulting horoscopes, Zodiac signs, and astrology—are to be rejected. Reading horoscopes, whether or not you believe in them, is not to reject them.

Are Christians allowed to read horoscopes?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that divination, including predictive astrology, is incompatible with modern Catholic beliefs, such as free will. It rejects all forms of divination, including horoscopes, palm reading, omen interpretation, clairvoyance, and mediums, which conceal a desire for power over time, history, and other human beings. These practices contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear owed to God alone.

Astrology and science, Christian mysticism, Christianity and paganism, Esoteric Christianity, Jesus Christ in comparative mythology, Jewish views on astrology, Muslim views on astrology, and William Lilly’s book Christian Astrology are all considered incompatible with modern Catholic beliefs.

Why is astrology considered witchcraft?

The conviction in malevolent spiritual entities gave rise to a dual condemnation of magical practices that sought to benefit humanity rather than cause harm, as well as divination techniques of all kinds. This was largely due to the fact that the ability to foresee and predict future events was often perceived as being closely associated with witchcraft.

Where in the Bible does it say zodiac signs are a sin?

The Bible, as cited in Deuteronomy 18:9-14, Leviticus 19:31, Isaiah 31:1-6, and Acts 19:18-20, offers guidance to Christians on the avoidance of astrology, mediums, and the occult, as these practices have the potential to impede the growth of their faith.

What does the Bible say about numerology and astrology?

In Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (King James Version), it is stated that no individual shall be found who makes their son or daughter pass through fire, uses divination, observes times, enchants, or consults with familiar spirits. Additionally, the text specifies that no one shall be found who is a wizard or a necromancer.

The integration of astrological beliefs within religious practices is a phenomenon that exhibits considerable diversity. Some individuals incorporate astrology into their spiritual practices, whereas others regard it as an incompatible element. Consequently, the relationship between astrology and religion is largely a matter of personal choice, with this choice often shaped by the individual’s interpretation of their faith.

Why is it bad to read horoscopes?

Astrology can be damaging due to the random information it provides, and it can hinder personal growth by interfering with decision-making. While Vyse doesn’t recommend acting on a horoscope, it may boost confidence and improve performance. However, Sandbek and Vyse agree that there are more reliable ways to build self-esteem. They suggest that using random information to feel good is not healthy and that people should focus on strengthening their support system, relationships, and weeding out bad ones. Technology and resources can help improve people’s lives by enhancing their support systems and relationships.

Are horoscopes pagan?

In contrast to the cyclical observances of the pagan sun festival, astrology is not directly linked to the annual sun cycle. This is because in earlier forms of astrology, the positions of the planets were not considered.

Where in the Bible does it say to avoid astrology?

God expressed His disapproval of astrology, as seen in Isaiah 47:13-14, where He pronounced fiery judgment on the astrologers of Babylon. God’s view against astrology is also evident in Daniel 2:2, where King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon called the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and the Chaldeans to reveal a strange dream to him. However, they were unable to perform the king’s request, leading to their death. God’s prophet, Daniel, saved the day by revealing the dream and its interpretation, revealing that God alone can reveal all secrets and mysteries beyond man’s knowledge.

Some argue that the Bible supports astrology, but the Hebrew word “ma’adannah” refers to the Pleiades and Orion constellations, which are chains of about 500 stars. High-powered telescopes reveal that they are bound together by a delicate stream of nebulous matter. The’sweet influences’ mentioned in Job 38:31 do not relate to influencing events on earth, but rather to the Hebrew word “ma’adannah”, which refers to the celestial chain of about 500 stars.

  • Message continues here: it may affect your own life if you keep thinking your zodiac is a bad sign, there are positives with your zodiac but if you worry about your afterlife you may affect your own life, along as you hear the word of God and you’re a Christian then you’ll be alright, everyone has so much to live for so why waste it??? anyway that’s all I have to say, if you disagree with my opinion on zodiac signs, then that’s okay just keep praising God and miracles will come. Any way, that’s for reading my comment and have a blessed day, year, and life.💙💚💛💜💓💕💖💗💘💝💞💟👍👋👌👼

  • I’ve been perusal a lot of astrology articles this past month and looking into it more because I found it strangely accurate and fascinating…but it always felt off when I read anything about zodiacs etc, and I felt like I was learning things I shouldn’t know. I don’t want to risk hearing anymore so I had to stop your article at 17secs, sorry. I didn’t think you’d actually start the article with reading a horoscope, otherwise, I wouldn’t have clicked on here.

  • I think it is really dangerous to dismiss the validity of astrology- it’s like saying the devil is just a mythical creature. I fell into the trap of astrology because I was told it was “vague and untrue”, so when I experienced otherwise I fell for the trap and believed people that said I can find God there. I was deceived, because I didn’t take staying away from it seriously since it was “not real”. Thankfully, God has called me back to reality. Please teach the truth about this.

  • I’m born Christian and my horoscope is scorpio(12 nov). I knew from my childhood that Christian should not follow astrology, moreover I also do not believe in something which is illogical or supernatural. Sometimes I think a lot about the existence of a deity (I’m a deep thinker maybe by circumstances) So I did not believe anything about horoscope since my teenage. However in my mid 20s I had a little issue in my love life, the high school boys and girls would say ” reality hit me hard on my face” . That was the time I started reading my zodiac / scorpio personality out of desperation and frustration. Just to know and understand my self little more so that I could some how escape from the pain. I found that its strangely very accurate as far as my behavior and personality is concerned ( not sure about future predictions). It described me at least 80% accurately. Ex: I’m quite, highly sexual (sex god), jealousy, very revengeful, protective, emotional, intuitive etc. it sounds very general but when i read thoroughly it became very specific as if it knew me closely. Also, on that process I came across one website (I dont remember the link anymore) some thing related to numerology. I entered my date, month and year of my birth and approximate time of birth and hit enter. The information I got from there about my past was incredible, one thing that caught my attention was that it says I had a very bad and abusive childhood therefore my middle age would be extremely emotional and that things would get better when I turn 40.

  • To be honest I feel like I’m stuck in the middle of losing my mind about the horoscopes because I used to be obsessed myself as believing that I am a Libra and feel like overpower myself to be bad but I feel like God is away and my heart but to me is like I was making excuses from families the way I am that I am a peacemaker but when I hear myself say that feels like I mock Jesus but now on I feel like I give up believing the Zodiac because I love Jesus more than just whatever was there that tells me that I’m a Libra I don’t know it’s okay because God is a jealous God and it’s like you’re telling yourself that you don’t need him that you called yourself a god so please be careful what you believe in because God does Judge all things.

  • Its a complicated subject. I legitimately don’t know. Keep in mind most “horoscopes” are false. The ones in the newspaper were literally put there to get more sold (alas, it worked). In my experience, when I checked out what my signs (there’s more to it than just the sun sign) were and how the planets and houses and aspects aligned together, it seemed accurate most of the time. I’m starting to think that it is true, you just shouldn’t look at it anyway, for one reason or another. It’s said that astrology was taught to humans by a rebelling angel, which calls into question just how much of it is true, and how much of it should be looked into. Regardless, the stars are wonderful, and proclaim the glory of God. There’s absolutely nothing wrong inherently with studying the Zodiac, because it was put in place by God.

  • as far as divination and spiritual practices and beliefs they are just different ways of connecting we all dont find god the same it’s not the words it’s the meanings behind them its not the way you approach its what you are approaching. Every religion is wrong in the eyes of another but every religion believes they are the only correct ones its funny how that Is

  • The unreliability of star charts and horoscopes only emphasizes the wisdom of looking to the Creator for guidance and not to the things he has created. (Romans 1:24,25) However, an even greater reason to avoid the use of horoscopes is that this could lead to rendering worship “to the sun or the moon or all the army of the heavens, a thing (God has) not commanded.”—Deuteronomy 17:2-5

  • It’s interesting to hear this viewpoint. As a Christian, who has studied the scriptures extensively, experienced miracles, and the incredible power of God, I’ve come to realize I don’t know everything. I find this a bit slanted and lacking knowledge. This topic is clearly directed to disregard astrology as evil, yet those who fully believe this easily turn to sources such as sorcery. What do I mean? But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. Job 1:10 Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7 The word “Sorcery” in this particular passage… translated from the Greek in Revelation 18:23… means Pharmakia. Pharmacy, poison, magic, witchcraft,… – And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. Rev 18:23 The scriptures tell us to get knowledge and understanding. Speaking of things you know nothing about is merely an opinion, not from an expert. It’s easy to sit amoungst people who agree and tell your viewpoint to discredit any value of what anohter one has insights to. Astorlogy is disregraded as evil. Period. Which part is evil? The planets and how they align and move energies affecting the earth and its inhabitants, the tide, the temperatures, the moods of people?

  • I am a Christian so I don’t believe in zodiac signs because it may lead to regret being born on the day you were born, and people say depending on your zodiac you may go to heaven or hell depending on it, and I’m a Scorpio and said that Scorpios will go to hell and it makes me mad because there maybe a lot of people out there who are Scorpios and are Christians, and I believe your zodiac doesn’t really matter and you shouldn’t follow horoscopes but only follow the word of God, I don’t hate zodiac signs but if you keep worrying about your zodiacs… read next comment I made

  • Psalm 32:8, I LOVE that VERSE. Though I LOVE ALL Of God’s WORD. But certain ones I LIVE On and OFF of More Noticeably. And John Piper is my ALL time Favorite of All men of God who Speak of His Word. I Highly Respect that man. And, Matthew 23:8 says, “Don’t let anyone call you ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only ONE Teacher, and All of you Are Equal as brothers and sisters. 1 John 2:27 Now you Have Received the Holy Spirit, and He Lives within you, so you DON’T Need Anyone to Teach you what is True. For the Spirit Teaches you EVERYTHING you Need to know, and what He Teaches Is True—it is Not a lie. So just as He Has Taught you, Remain in fellowship with Christ. Living as Children of God So I understand Todd on this. However, that lady who came up to him and his friends at their table, more than likely, hadn’t any idea you guys knew God at all. Though I Know that God’s Working All things for the Good in our Lives Only Applies to His Own Children, Those Who LOVE (Obey) Him, BUT, Often times upon an event in one’s life, and as the very Result of that event, (Positively) Turns out being what Turns a man to God for his First time, and Forever. But those verses above that I just applied to this here, are on TEACHING, (equipping) ONLY, which is NOT the same, At All, as a Timely Message of Truth or a Gentle Reminder of God’s Truth from His Faithful Followers. Hebrews 3:13 13 But Encourage one another Daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

  • I did a article discussing the core differences between astrology and religion. I have to agree with you. Horescopes can be broad and sometimes spot on. But Astrology, is an avenue people take to help understand their characteristics/ energies. If God created the human from the dirt of the firmament, then perhaps we should consider ourselves an extension of every planet and star He created since astrology implies we are connected to the stars? Great article. Check out mine and tell me what you think my brother. God bless!

  • I’ve never been into astrology until very recently. For the longest I’ve stayed away from it, I dont agree with a lot of it, but I was drawn to the spiritual side of it when it talks about the archangels, our guardian angels, and the Holy Spirit, this was something I was recently thinking about. I never truly knew how other Christians (even tho I’m catholic) thought about astrology. I was always told to dont watch or read it, but I never truly heard someone speak on it.

  • I am a relatively newbie Christian who has struggled up to now with consulting my sign and chart advice. Listening to this and other christian explinations about this has been very useful. My first step, deleting any astro apps, and refraining from associating myself or others and their behaviour to their signs. What am I? I’m a wanttowalkwithjesus

  • Reading those things is disobedient to God. It’s no different from witchcraft. You are worshipping other gods who are evil and allowing those demons to control your life by you believing just because you are this sign you “naturally” behave in a specific way. And yes, those things will tell you the truth. The devil is also a prophet, but does he bring good prophecy…

  • I believe that reading tarot cards it’s just like using a fortune cookie gives you wise words / words of wisdom we cannot predict the future only God can do that for us but is a cool concept pretty much it’s just pictures and that’s all it will really be you can tell stories through pictures and that’s it it’s just coincidence if you pull certain cards like for example if you ask the cards am I going to get into a relationship or something like that it’s just a coincidence that you pull those cards that say that you’ll get into one or that if you do it will fail you just tell stories like I said through the pictures

  • The man on the right is 100% correct when he says pop horoscopes are vague. 1/12th of humans “belong” to any given zodiac sign. Who made a better argument against astrology was St Augustine of Hippo. He actually studied astrology and gave twins as an argument, stating that the same events don’t happens to twins one after the other. Maybe he was talking about primary directions, but what he said could easily be applied to more modern techniques like secondary progressions and solar arcs. Horoscopic astrology is relatively new. Electional astrology has always been around and used by rulers. Ronald Reagan’s presidency is an example of this. In ancient times court astrologers had to get it right. Never mind losing their job; they usually would lose their life for getting a prediction wrong. The astrologers mentioned in Isaiah were such astrologers. They were consulted before going to war. In more recent times, JP Morgan’s astrologer warned him not to go on the Titanic cruise. Even with all the verses one can find against astrology, God can use anyone and anything for His purpose. The Bible is filled with examples of that.

  • Yes it is ! Jesus even did astrology! The 3 wise men read a horoscope to find Jesus remember follow the stars to king who? You don’t know? They brought gifts they were wizards ! Jesus was a soothsayer! The New Testament make broad general statements! Like love your enemies or love god first stop all lies it’s the same thing witchcraft

  • Why can’t god and astrology exist? What If it’s gods way of connecting us in a way? I know everyone doesn’t like to be categorized and we are all very different but at the end of the day we all still share the same characteristics and share the same behaviors as everyone else and people can attest to how accurate readings can be. I’m not saying put horoscopes above god, but maybe it’s one of gods hidden creations. Like could it have something to do w how he created us? Edit: ig believing in horoscopes is sinful so nvm

  • In my personal opnion, as a Christian, i don’t believe in astrology, and when i say i am a sign, or just read about signs, and it’s accurate, I always think that it’s fun to look at how true they are, but DON’T DETERMINE ANYBODY OR YOURSELF BECAUSE OF A SIGN. God made your personality, and while it might match up, but a lot of things are true for me, that aren’t for the sign. So i always keep it in mind, that God is the force, not some stars.

  • 13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. 14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it. ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭47:13-14‬

  • Also I’m not against zodiac signs because on the other side of my mind I think it does have to do with God, I’m just saying that people think of the afterlife depending on your zodiac, I mean only God decides that you should go to heaven or the underworld and I think zodiacs don’t matter whether you’re going to heaven or the underworld it only matters what you’ve done in this world and what you worship, only God decides the afterlife and future, just keep praying and have a.blessed day, year, and life. (I know I said that before, but I’ll say it again.) Cya!

  • i am a christian too but i still do not know why this is evil at first but then my mom explain to me and i was like they are very evil believe in god and trust him and say this to your self we would not be hear if it was not up to god,go is a savor and god is are hero no one else if you do have other hero,s it is OK but god will always be are number one just like the person who raises us but some times we can get punished because if we did something evil and ugly i know we should not celebrate Halloween but i am but to make it up to him i am being a angel i know when they posted this it was a long time ago but when i am perusal this it 2019 October 15 so it is very close to Halloween so i am looking up to it Halloween is evil and do not make a pumpkin and leave it at your door then spirits will come in and you will turn up side down

  • Did you know the bible has many ties to zodiacs and stars? The facts are out there, REAL facts, and many scriptures in the bible refrence different zodiacs, including Aquarius and Pisces. Why is it that almost all Pagan gods (yes Jesus is a Pagan god) are born on December 25th, all had 12 diciples, all born from a virgin, all died and resurrected in 3 days? (Christianity is based off Pagan religions, even though Jesus was technically born sometime in June, early church leaders decided it should be celebrated on December 25th to match with many other religions.) The bible is a Astrotheological literary hybrid. It’s mythological in a way. So this pastor is against zodiacs when in fact ancient societies created religion based on these zodiacs, stars and our star, or the sun. And I believe the Sun itself and mankind itself to represent god, what else can create or destroy life as plentiful to the sun? From crops and livestock, to weather and the beautiful seasons we get on this planet, to calendars and days, to humans and almost all of life itself, the sun is why we are here. Ancient Egyptians and almost all ancient populations used the stars for many different tasks like navigation, predicting weather/seasons, when to grow/harvest certian crops and lastly religion/spiritual beliefs. Tell me how this is wrong when religions like christianity basically control societies these days which is actually why Christianity was born in the first place. Ever wonder why certian countries have strict religious rules and don’t allow expressionism?

  • And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and LET THEM SERVE AS SIGNS.” – Genesis 1:14 Its so funny how some christians reject astrology, when on the first page Bible, you can read it. And isn’t Psalm 19 (A psalm of David) a song of praise for astrology? And the story about the 3 wise men from the east, was it not their practice of astrology that breng them to Bethlehem? So, this pastor doesn’t know the Bible very well. Further the astrology they talking about – has nothing to do with real astrology, a tool to give you more insight in who you are and your life path and more.

  • Jesus is the Sun and the 12 disciples are the 12 signs of the zodiac. Same as Hercules and the 12 legions. This guy is out of his mind. The Sun that lights the world and walks on water. Its the Sun and the reflection. Easter is the Sun passing the Equator. Christmas is the Sun returning back north after the long decent and the winter solstice. Please ignore these guys. They do not know what they are talking about!

  • No offense, but it is also clear that the wise men were astrologers. Clear that God created the stars to have signs. Clear that if a different man, of anotha ethnic background had been asked the same questions, (in this interview), he would have maybe, been more likely to explain how a Christian can mix astrology & Christianity, but still putting God first. Yep, put Jesus and God before astrology. Then limit oneself about how deep one should go into astrology steps. Au revoir.

  • How can these folks argue over something you know nothing about lol these folks are ignorant.. they speak on astrology but know nothing about it lol the bible has astrology written all through it. Do your homework in detail before you guys make a article..it’s extremely obvious you don’t even know the basic but yet your giving advice over something you know little to nothing about.
