Is God’S Ethereal City Unfailing?

The Mystical City of God, a monumental four-volume history of the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was condemned by a majority of doctors of the Sorbonne due to a faulty and hastily translated French text. The late Catholic thinker Fr. James V. Schall, S.J. also recommended reading The City of God at least once in our lives. The book consists of four volumes: The Conception, The Incarnation, The Transfixion, and The Coronation.

The Mystical City of God is a testament to the divine plan for creation and the salvation of mankind. It was written in obedience to her confessors, burnt twice, recommenced three times, never of her own volition. The book is a collection of revelations about Our Lord and Our Lady, the creation of the world, the meaning of the Apocalypse, and Lucifer’s fall.

The book was published in the 1600s and is available in four volumes and a Popular Abridgement. It is a testament to the divine plan for creation and the presence of the Virgin Mary in the life of the Church. The book is filled with enthralling information about Our Lord and Our Lady, the creation of the world, the meaning of the Apocalypse, and Lucifer’s fall.

Is The City of God realistic?

City of God is a historically accurate movie that uses genuine people and places from its true setting, including the Cidade Alta favela, to create a realistic feel. The movie was shot in Cidade Alta, not the actual Cidade de Deus favela, which was considered too dangerous for production. The young cast, including Alexandre Rodrigues as Rocket, were non-actors from Cidade de Deus, adding authenticity to the film. The movie’s natural feel is due to amateur performances, resulting in unscripted and candid moments.

However, it is not a full document of the truth of the place or its people, as the favelas had worsened since the 1970s and 1980s. Despite portraying the past, City of God sheds light on Rio’s slums and crime at the time, which some locals criticized as exploitation while others championed it, as the exposure helped change government policies.

Who wrote the book The Mystic City of God?

Mystical City of God is a 17th-century book written by the Franciscan nun Venerable Mary of Jesus of Ágreda. According to María de Ágreda, the book was dictated by the Blessed Virgin Mary and focused on the life of the Virgin Mary and the divine plan for creation and soul salvation. The book alternates between descriptions of the Trinity, the Virgin Mary’s life, and her spiritual guidance. It describes various virtues and how readers should live to reflect them in their own lives, with the Virgin Mary as their model for sanctity.

The work has the Imprimatur of several Popes and Bishops and appeals primarily to those who believe in private revelation and the sanctity of Mary. However, non-Catholics generally do not accept the teachings of the Catholic Church and are skeptical of works of this nature. In 1673, María de Ágreda was declared venerable, but the process of her beatification has not been completed.

What is the only religion God accepts?

An individual who claims to adhere to a religious tradition but fails to exemplify the associated principles is, in fact, deceiving themselves and thereby rendering their professed religion devoid of intrinsic value. The religion that God has accepted is the care of orphans and widows in distress, as well as the prevention of contamination by the world.

What is the mystical city of God summary?

The Mystical City of God is a private revelation of the Church, involving personal experiences and insights about events and persons of Salvation history. These revelations, often a result of special grace, are not binding on faith and morals of the faithful. Their validity must be measured against the official revelation received through Jesus Christ, treasured and deepened for millenaries, and pronounced by the church’s magisterium.

Is City of God a masterpiece?

In 2003’s Brazilian film City of God, ‘Benny’s Farewell’ is a memorable scene where Benny, the coolest hood in the city, hosts a farewell party for his new love. The scene captures the nascent disco movement of the 1970s, with young people enjoying the party. Benny is confronted by his childhood friend and business partner Lil Zé, who then shoots him. The scene serves as a stark reminder that violence is always around the corner in the City of God.

City of God, a global success, showcases police corruption, gang violence, and poverty faced by those living on the extremities of Rio’s society in the 1970s. Based on Paulo Lins’s novel and inspired by real-life events, it explores life and crime in the Cidade de Deus, a neighborhood project created by the Guanabara State government to physically move favelas away from the city center and Rio’s beaches. The film has become one of the Brazilian film industry’s biggest global successes, capturing the essence of the city’s underbelly and the challenges faced by its residents.

  • Greetings from Spain. I am a great follower of this website and I am a close friend of the nuns of Agreda, where the venerable Maria de Jesus de Agreda lived and her tomb is preserved. I have shown the nuns this article so they can see the beautiful apostolate you have done and they are very happy. Gabi, they send you their blessing and thanks for making the book and their venerable mother known.

  • I’m a convert/revert, fell away from the church for 15 years. God and Mary brought me back this past February and your articles have led me to start going to confession once a week or every two weeks. I am allowed to receive Jesus again, after 15 years without him and I am receiving kneeling and on the tongue. I’m praying the baby rosary (five decades) daily but tried three rosaries a day for a week or two and MAN!!! You aren’t kidding about the graces. I’ve always had issues with a couple of my coworkers and they were bending over backwards to be nice to me. One even gave me a couple of gifts for no reason. My job is at a cafeteria at a high school and is very physically demanding and I had so much strength and energy I felt like I could work another shift after my first one was over which NEVER happens. Our Mother is so good to us!!! Praise God!! And thank YOU, Gabriel. You have helped me and continue to help me, to grow in my faith for maybe the first time in my life and I’m 47 years old. It’s never too late while we are breathing. You and your family will remain in my prayers. God bless you!! ~ Margaret Anne “Annie”

  • Just a regular Dad from Texas, but I want to thank you for everything this website is doing for Mary and Jesus. I have grown so much closer to Mary because of what this website has revealed to me about her and her Holy Rosary! So much healing has happened to me, my wonderful wife, and our family of 5 children by devoting prayer to all the mysteries of the rosary daily; and I hope my message finds you well. Thank you so very much for doing our Mothers work here. In our time, she is moving about like a graceful mother to lead us to her son Jesus! Never stop spreading her message, and I pray that she will continue to shower God’s Graces upon everyone who works to make this content! Blessings in Christ Jesus! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this book!!!

  • Can a woman so venerated, yet so humble, not know what God has given her to ponder in her heart? Oh Lord, how many hairs are on my weary contemplative head? The Book of books is just the beginning, of what is known to us, His Love was from before this start… Oh Lord, how Your sweet Words are, our most precious Daily Bread!

  • I have been praying to be lead to a book that will help me know Mary so that I may love her more profoundly and I think my prayers have been answered. I have done my consecration to Jesus through Mary and I want my consecration to go deeper that it may take root that no matter what storm comes my way those roots will not be uprooted, Mary that I may know you more♥️🙏

  • Can you imagine how deeply Our Lady must have longed to go to Mass? A Mother whose Son had died and then ascended, the longing for Her Son to be near to Him in a material way. Surely she knew He was in Heaven, but I can’t help but think she missed Him afterwards. As mothers do. How deeply she must have loved St John and the apostles as they were the only way she could touch her Son again. The profound love and so pure. May we all desire to receive Him as Momma Mary did, and gather around her feet as the apostles must have, drawing near to hear about Our Lord as a child and all the inner life of the Holy Family 💜🙏🏻 Mediatrix of All Graces, please pray for us 🙏🏻💕💙

  • I was for so long a Catholic only in my Baptism when I was a baby and we went to Mass when I was little, then my family just stopped going. I finally became confirmed when I was 30 and I am so blessed to have the chance and blessing to become The Catholic I am truly meant to be. I am happily in the middle of reading The Mystical City of God! Thanks be to God🙏

  • Wow!!! 10:05 “Our Lady comes into our hearts and she cleans out the filth and the dirt…so that she can bring Jesus Christ to Earth… She comes into our hearts. She comes before us by the power of the Holy Spirit. She gives us faith, hope and eventually Divine Love and she brings Jesus Christ to life in us and us to life in Him.” That is just amazing. Thank you, Most Holy Mary. Ave Maria!

  • I’m a convert since 1991 praise God! It was the Blessed Virgin that carefully led me since I was in a Catholic school in 1st & 2nd grade. I used to kneel before all the enormous statues in the chapel not knowing at all what I was doing or what statue was representing who. Mary! Oh she saved me! SHE is so sweet & wonderful! I thank God for her!!! Jesus! What a mother you have! Thank you for giving her to us. I’m 61 now. Have been completely cured from cancer. Am a Traditional devout Catholic. Married 42 yrs to a wonderful Catholic husband, & am blessed in my children & grandchildren. I yearn for Heaven but Mary makes this earth bearable.

  • I was introduced to this spiritual work through Fr. Donald Calloway’s “Consecration to St. Joseph: Wonders of our Spiritual Father”. I don’t think I’ll read 4 volumes that contain 2,676 pages. But I may read the popular abridgement which was made to spread this account to a much broader audience. I really am into the apparitions and visions of Mary. They have opened my mind and heart up to God. This is certainly a book that I want to get one day to understand Mary and Jesus more. God bless you! 🙂

  • Any person who wants to love, know and untie themselves with Jesus, should read the Mystical City of God. Thank you Father for the wonderful wonderful summary of this holy book on the hidden life of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It gives us so much content to meditate on while we pray the rosary. More importantly, it helps us love the Holy Family even more, and how we should imitate them. Praised and blessed be their Holy names

  • My perish has a statue of blessed sulanus Casey in our entry. I live in Michigan. I feel the presence of the Holy Spirit every time I say his name and I swear his statue smiles at me every time I pay homage to it. I feel I was led to this article by him as I have found it by accident. I’m going to read this book now

  • Dear Father, as you are explaining my Heart is broken in piece…am no more of this world but for my MOST HOLY EVER VIRGIN MOTHER OF GOD MARY MOST HOLY.. THIS BOOK IS MY ONLY TREASURE WHICH I EARNED FOR MY LIFE AND THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST BY ST.ANNE CATHERINE..THESE TWO BOOKS ARE MY TWO EYES.. THANK YOU FATHER PROFOUNDLY FROM THE CORE OF MY HEART ❤️

  • The greatest books ever given from heaven for the benefit of man. To know the mother is to truly know the son. open any of the four volumes anywhere and your breath will be taken away from you. Having read the four volumes at least 5 times from start to finish I would gladly live on a desert island or a hidden cave and be the happiest man on this earth. would anybody change the mother willed for you by the eternal. So only our lady was fit to be the mother of God. unfathomable. God bless all who read this gift from Heaven

  • Oh, father, I am so glad to hear someone talking about this book! This book is an absolute treasure and gift to the Church. I have tried to share this knowledge with others, but you, by far, are reaching so many more. God bless your work spreading the story of Mary and the beautiful way God created Her for the work of salvation. I attempted this book in my early 20’s, put it down because I was unfamiliar with the beautiful language of it. Took it up a year later and devoured every word. I believe we have to be properly disposed to receive this treasure.

  • The Mystical City of God is the Vedas of modern times. Infinite in its flawless mystagogy, it is truly miraculous that such infinite wisdom is readily available to anyone willing to wash their hands, say a prayer and read a book ~ in these times. Anyone who experiences this work will be changed, forever.

  • The first volume of The Mystical City goes from Mary’s Immaculate Conception till her 14th year. Vol 2 narrates from the Annunciation to the Lord’s baptism by John, if I remember correctly. Vol 3 of Free LIBRIVOX audiobook read by Ann Boulais, goes from our Lord’s ministry to His Ascension. Vol. 4 covers our Lady’s role in the early church through her Assumption. I was sad when the reading ended! Wished it went on and on. Glad that her life continues in heaven and with each believer in her Incarnate Son.

  • It’s a treasure for me. I have the book but it’s so voluminous and can be hard to go really far although extremely rich, but since I downloaded the audiobook I’ve almost finished all four volumes in a month or so, as I can actually be listening while heading to work or about my daily chores. It’s so cool. I’d sooner start afresh. Every Catholic and just about everyone should have this book

  • Thank you for this article. I just ordered the book. I already have a deep love of Mary but I’ve never heard things put quite this way. I’ve read The Life of Jesus and Mary as a seen by the mystics but this book is much more in depth. I actually prayed earlier and asked God to grant me, due to all my recent sufferings, a profound blessing today. I believe finding this article is that blessing. ❤🙏✨️🌞

  • Thank you for the beautiful article and the book and I agree . This reminded me today we celebrate Pentecost Monday. After mass, I saw the bigger picture of Blessed Mother Mary . She was called full of grace because God made a perfect match for her son who is God . When Blessed Mother Mary said yes at annunciation the power of God overshadowed her and the Holyspirit came upon her becoming one with God, Holy Spirit and son . At the foot of the cross Jesus looked at her mother and Said woman behold your son, giving blessed mother Mary full authority and power over the disciples and all children including us because, beloved John represented disciples and us as her children. Important event to note is Blessed Mother presence at the upper room with the disciples ready to receive the Holy Spirit renewal . We note at the wedding at Cana Mary instructed the disciples to do what Jesus will tell them to do. Jesus never used the word mother but women because the mission of blessed mother Mary was bigger and Jesus never wanted to confuse that role . At the garden of Eden in the book of genesis, man gave the serpent authority and power to rule the garden that God entrusted him with when they ate forbidden fruit and sin was born separating God and man unity . When serpent was asked he kept quiet, when Adam was asked he blamed the woman . God is so holy in nature and he is love that’s why his Son Jesus needed to come through Pure love and chastity of blessed mother . Jesus Christ our savior and redeemer came to show us the love of the father and reconcile us with God the father and ourselves his mission began at the baptism in Jordan river and choosing disciple, the gospel then the gift of ❤sufferings, passion, crucification death and resurrection of our lord and savior.

  • One day, by reading the interpretation of Proverbs 8, Rev 12, and Rev 21, in the Mystical City of God, I understood that I had been wrong all of my life on regards to the future home in heaven described in Apoc 21 and 22. I always understood, that these chapters were about the Church in heaven, just as St Augustine an many Church Fathers had interpreted it, even until know. But now, I understand that they are all about the Virgin Mary. There is there some resemblance with the Church, But I know now that God wanted to reveal, what Jesus couldn’t tell his disciples about the Blessed Virgin Mary, because they were not ready (cf. Jn 16:12). Supposedly, the Church should be ready by now to understand this mystery of Mary; but, I don’t know what holds her back. More over, I think I had it understood right, but one day I woke up with the words you said at the beginning: ” Eyes have not seen, ears have not heard what God has prepared for those who love him” and later on, by listening again the interpretation of chapter 21 of the Mystical City of God, I understood that this chapter did not referred only to the future life ( because I had it ingrained in my soul as the Church in the world to come), but mostly to the past, when the Blessed Virgin was conceived, revealed in that verse of the Holy City, the New Jerusalem descending from heaven as a Bride prepared for her husband (Apoc 21:2), so as to be the Tabernacle of God among men (cf. Apoc 21:3). Then I realized, that there must be in these verses something which can tell why it is not possible to interpret the Church in these chapters, but Solely Mary.

  • Amazing article everyone!! I have had this book for over a year now and have always found it difficult to get through. I am going to re-commit myself to reading the entire thing this summer. As I opened up this article this morning I received a crystal clear instruction from the Holy Spirit: “If you want to truly be my Apostle, imitate My Mother.” There is my problem. I am praying lots of Rosaries, enrolled in Marian Confraternities, the MI, etc. but I wasn’t striving enough to imitate Her, to BE another Mary for others. Thank you Lord for this wonderful insight! Ave Maria!

  • Thank you Frater Giovanni for your profound insights and devotion to our Lady. Each time I have watched you speak about her, I am invigorated and it reminds me how grateful I am for my devotion to our Blessed Mother. Your talk are truly touching and riveting. This book looks amazing, hope to buy a copy soon. God Bless you and may our Lord, our Lady, St Joseph and St Mary of Agreda continue to walk with in your vocation. Please keep these beautiful articles coming 🙏🏼

  • IN NOMINE PATRIS ET FILII ET SPIRITUS SANCTI. AMEN. Thank and praise Precious Lord Jesus Christ through the Immaculate Heart of Blessed Mother Mary and St. Joseph. I hope to have this Mystical City of God as soon as possible. I am a great believer of our Blessed Mother Mary. Thank you so much for this great articles. God bless you more and more and more, Amen.

  • I Heard Several Priest That She’s In The Eucharist Also. She Had Jesus In Her Womb And The Wedding Of Cana. She Is A Advocate Through Our Lord Jesus Christ🙏✝️❤️👍She Has The Blood Of Our Lord. I Cried Like A Child . Just To Tell You How Much We Are Far From God And His Mother. As Well For Unbelievers! The Rosary Is The Story of Our Lord And His Mother And His Father All In One🙏🌹🌹🌹Bringing Us Salvation☺️🙂✝️My Heart Jumped When I Heard This Message From Our Priest And Others.🙏

  • WOW THIS IS SO WELL DONE. I just have to thank you for this beautiful article. Your website has helped me so so much in my spiritual life and you’ve inspired me to pray 4 Rosaries. I can’t wait to read this book!! My mind was blown when he was explaining the title and its connection to our lady. She’s so powerful. Ven Mary of Agreda needs to be canonized! Please pray for me and I will be praying for you:)

  • Thank you so much for this! I’ve read The City of God 4 times and have puzzled over why it’s not more widely received? I have a great devotion to Blessed Fr. Solanus Casey and through him have treasured The City of God. I believe that next to the Holy Scriptures, this has most impacted me in my faith and I, like Fr Solanus believe it should read over and over and over because it strengthens our understanding so much and feeds our souls. I can’t recommend it more strongly. It is one of best things ever.

  • This is beautiful and the first time I have heard about these books. Thank you so much for informing us, the converts…. it sometimes seems to me that life is too short to learn about all the wonders of our Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church and the mystics… so beautiful, so rich. Gid bless you👐👐🕯🕯🕯

  • Once again truly an amazing article by your team. This book was given to me and I shrugged it off as this tome that was over my head so probably useless to me since I wouldn’t understand. Thanks to this article I went and actually picked it up and read some sections that my friend has highlighted and not only was it readable but so beautiful, I’m excited to actually read it now. Lol

  • This book is very good, the writer took a very long time to write and actually burnt the 1st attempt. She was then asked again by her confessor to write again. She felt unworthy in writing it. This book will make you cry and you will definitely be in Awe of the revelations in this book. Jesus introduces her to it and then Mother Mary does the rest. Pray before you read it🙏🏽🔥

  • I read the complete book many years ago around 2010, all 3000 pages. Loved it and always remember bits of it. I gave the book to a friend of mine but she was not impressed. I gave another book to my Parish priest but he was not impressed. I don’t know why. My friend returned the book to me unread. I really do not think that she really believed Venerable Mary of Agreda’s account. I do definitely. But what I do question is why has she not been made a Saint as yet. Apparently I have heard or read that the book may have been wrongly translated or interpreted in parts. That whoever made the translation added their own version thereby distorting the story in places corrupting some of the writings of Mary of Agreda, but still is no excuse to beatify Mary of Agreda and make her a Saint. Quite baffling really. The book my friend returned to me I put on the table at the back of the church for someone to pick it up and read it. At the time we had a visiting Franciscan Priest OFM, whether he took it I don’t know.

  • Like Father Carlos Martins says before you view the relics he brings to Parishes, he always says that the Saints always find YOU. This article and this young priest have let me know that I am supposed to read The Mystical City of God. Not one book but the entire tome of 4 books. I call St. Maria Agreda the OG flying nun! LOL. Well she keeps popping up in my life and I think it is time to see what she is trying to tell me. ❤❤❤

  • O’ Lovely lady dressed in blue teach me how to pray. God was just your little boy. Tell me what to say. Did you lift him up sometimes gently on your knee? Did you sing to him like mother does to me? Did you ever try telling him stories of the world? Did he cry? Do you think he cares to the little things that happen? Do angel’s wings make noise? Can he hear me if I speak low? Does he understand me? Now tell me for you know. Ohhh. Lovely lady dressed in blue. Teach me how to pray. God was just your little boy and you know the way. Ave Maria. Bishop Sheen

  • THE MOST Imprimaturs of any book after the Bible(!!)…. Yet bishops+ priests doNOT even mention it! What disregard they show to Our Lady and to the highest treasures of the Church! They ARE DUTY-BOUND to teach the faithful all–and especially the most esteemed–treasures, practices and devotions of the past >that educate, nourish and shield people’s minds and souls. St. Jacinta of Fatima spoke of certain immodest dress of nurses(!) when she was hospitalized. And times now are much worse than they were then; so, the faithful need >more resources, not less< to shield and boost their minds and souls. Oh, religious leaders will talk all day about climate change, care for the planet, social justice, ecumenism, etc., but not say a word about this masterpiece!??? And that's not touching on the need to turn to Our Lady and her Rosary. (When's the last you heard a sermon or even brief talk about that?) Or about Eucharistic Adoration–and making reparation also? Archbishop Fulton Sheen and Mother Teresa swore by that: an hour each day for all in the religious life. For the laity Bishop Sheen strongly urged a half hour daily if at all possible. (Most "Catholics" spend much more than that on social media–shows up their priorities.) When's the last time you heard a bishop, pastor or priest clearly speak about the importance of these things? Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on us. Immaculate Heart of Mary pray for us. Ven. Mary of Agreda pray for us.

  • A beautiful revelation about the identity of the third person of the holy Trinity. The story of Mary begins by she is immaculate conceived, full of grace, the annunciation by the archangel Gabriel that Hashem is with her, that Mary is blessed among all women and that by the power of the holy spirit she would conceived as a virgin the messiah. On pentecost Mary is present in the room when the holy Spirit is given to the eleven disciples. Mary’s holy body and spirit are assumed into heaven. Mary appears not in the flesh as Jesus did after the resurrection to apostles but instead Mary appearition is as a Holy Spirit of a woman to Juan Diego in Mexico, again to Bernadette in France, and again to three children in Portugal.

  • amen about her being the new paradise the new heaven and the new earth look at the Guadalupe image this is the re-creation of the new heaven and the new earth everything is there the entire Bible is being told in this image it is mystical, there are hidden images of the face of God he goes through each of his sorrows with his holy mother he is depicted just as in the shroud both of these images are connected to each other

  • The meaning of “man is made in the image of God”. Adam and Eve was made in the image of Christ and his mother who was in the divine mind before the creation of the universe. “Mystical city of God” by catholic mystic Mary of Agreda (1601- 1667) 137. On the sixth day he formed and created Adam, as it were of the age of thirty-three years. This was the age in which Christ was to suffer death, and Adam in regard to his body was so like unto Christ, that scarcely any difference existed. Also according to the soul Adam was similar to Christ. From Adam God formed Eve so similar to the Blessed Virgin, that she was like unto Her in personal appearance and in figure. God looked upon these two images of the great Originals with the highest pleasure and benevolence, and on account of the Originals He heaped many blessings upon them, as if He wanted to entertain Himself with them and their descendants until the time should arrive for forming Christ and Mary. 138. But the happy state in which God had created the parents of the human race lasted only a very short while. The envy of the serpent was immediately aroused against them, for satan was impatiently awaiting their creation, and no sooner were they created, than his hatred became active against them. However, he was not permitted to witness the formation of Adam and Eve, as he had witnessed the creation of all other things: for the Lord did not choose to manifest to him the creation of man, nor the formation of Eve from a rib; all these things were concealed from him for a space of time until both of them were joined.

  • Jesus is the Mediator between God and man. Not Mary in addition to Jesus. She cannot give us grace or merit, it comes from God through Jesus. Salvation of souls is through Jesus alone, and it’s the Holy Spirit who unites the church. Where has your love of all Scripture gone? Why has the name of Jesus been replaced on your lips with Mary’s name?

  • Good, but get rid of those fingernails in blue. Can you imagine the Virgin Mary painting her nails in such a sick colour or any colour? This is wrong! Women should imitate the Holy Virgin and refrain from all such things as makeup and the lipstick. It is simply wrong and does not help in the spiritual life.
