Fun to watch. I went to a “Brady Kids” concert in Portland OR during 4th grade and had the time of my life. We were eating at a restaurant buffet before the concert & they all came in, producers and all. My mother wouldn’t let me approach them until after they ate & told me that the reason “Greg Brady has a beer!!!,” was because he was older than the character he portrayed.😂 I watched Maureen put on mascara in the ladies’ room, me sitting on the counter & swinging my legs back & forth, got at least a smile from Eve, then played “spin the quarter” with Susan. They were such great kids & young adults. Later, they’d arranged front row seats for us by adding separate chairs as a new front row. Where other are now, I hope they’re happy and strong. And, that they are in such a precious memory of mine at such an impressionable age. Love them all!😂🙏🏼❣️
My Dad died in 1969 in a private plane crash with his 3 best friends. I had a wonderful Mom but she was emotionally unavailable for me and my older sister and brother. This shows taught me that Mike and Carol were the kind of parents I would want to be. I would talk openly to my kids and always let them know how much I loved them because it was what I wanted all those years. Eventually, my Mom became my best friend. I miss her very much now. Some may think it’s corny but it gave me a vision of how to be a better parent. ❤
I watched the Brady bunch since the show started in 1969, I was 4. I clearly remember all my friends would stop playing outdoors and run home to watch that show Friday night 8pm Chanel 2 and the partridge family was right after it at 8:30. The Brady bunch were enviable, they looked like a fun happy family and all around it was during a better time than today.
I remember the episode when that other couple adopted three boys of different races and went to Mike and Carol for advice about raising kids. They were initially planning to do a spin-off show from that episode that focused on the societal issues and challenge they would face while raising those boys. They ended up scrapping the idea due to lack of funds or something
Honestly, Ann B. Davis (Alice) was the heart and soul of the show, and they missed the mark a bit by not styling the character more like Shirley Booth’s portrayal of “Hazel” who constantly broke the fourth wall to let the audience share in poking fun at the rising middle class parvenus who think they are ‘hip’ but are really just ordinary, all too ordinary people.
I watched this show as I was growing up and truly appreaciated the themes the writers had to work with.For example each kid had a “Swelled Head” episode or a secret crisis episode. Then there were the “Battle of The Sex’s” episodes. Sherwood Shwartz just set the ball rolling with his initial ideas and gave us lots of laughs and food for thought at times.
I grew up in the 70’s and perusal the Brady Bunch brings it all wonderfully back. Similar to the Brady home my parents house inside had all the exposed stone work and stone planters and fire place which was very popular in home’s in the 70’s and of course the patio with the bright flower cushions and lastly my mum wearing her floral patio dresses. Yes the Brady Bunch takes me back to that magic decade and life was grand. My favourite Brady was Jan.
One of the reasons it was so watched was everyone I knew had 2 good stations and 1 blurry station. And it was on three times a day. We were hooked to TV as much as kids are hooked to their phones today. So we just sat through it. But it’s influences were still obvious. Half the boys of my age at the time wanted to be architects.
As a little kid (I was born in 1964) seeing this show on its first run, I never saw anything extraordinary about Mike and Carol sharing a bed. My parents shared a bed as did all my friends’ parents. I don’t know why that would’ve been considered controversial. Being divorced, yes, that would’ve been considered taboo because I didn’t know anyone who had divorced parents, but parents sharing a bed, no; they all did. Also, no mention in this whole article about Mr. Brady’s real life sexual leaning.
Our family was pretty similar to the Brady Bunch. Three boys and three girls living in a large house in a middle class neighborhood in California. We had the station wagon, the ugly kitchen and even the wood paneling. Our house had four bedrooms and two bathrooms. As the oldest boy I had my own room. All three of my sisters slept in a huge room downstairs and everything in there was pink. We didn’t have an Alice. We lived in that house from 1967 to 1976. My parents bought it for $25,000 and it was sold in 2020 for $1,325,000.
Christopher Knight’s parents lived down by the Jr High I went to. I was driving down the street heading home and a pickup truck backed out of a driveway fast. I slammed on the brakes just in time. There was Christopher looking surprised. I recognized him immediately. Should have hit him. He just drove off, no apology. Didn’t even get out of the truck to make sure I was ok. Guess since I didn’t run into him, he was good to go. Used to see Susan at the mall. She threw a temper tantrum because her mom wouldn’t take her into See’s Candy. Maureen used to ice skate at the rink in the same mall. Grew up with a lot of kid actors, went to school with a few.
The “Cousin Oliver” trick was used in Married…With Children in season eight when Peg’s cousin comes to visit. The child’s name was actually “Seven”, but the introduction of this character was also a dismal failure. I had a good laugh at the “no toilets in the show” part of this article. It was the same way in the various “Star Trek” shows. The glaring fact that nobody ever used a toilet but hilariously pointed out in the movie Star Trek: First Contact. When Dr. Cochran heads out toward the forest to “take a leak,” Geordie LaForge tries to utilize his enhanced vision to tell the Doctor that he isn’t detecting any “leak.” Cochran asks him, “Don’t any of you people from the future ever pee?”
Jan stole it for me on the show. Of all three, her blonde charming hair and sweet face was consistent, and as said, blossoming. Cindy was my age, and to me, she competed with Jan in her own cute, disarming style. Her hair had taken on a richer, deeper blonde tone, and her pigtails adorably offset her. By season five, however, her updated Dutch braids were fairly, but not as cute as her pigtails. Cindy had grown older, and was less and less charming. Jan, however, was the “Dove Of Morning Light” (The Brady Braves) all through. Marcia had very pretty blonde-brunette hair in seasons two and three. As the final two seasons loomed, her looks failed to mature somehow. Ain’t no doubt about it; Jan wins it, hands down, and Mr. Haskell would agree. And I STILL want to charm her away from George Glass, and be her steady. Sorry, Clark Tyson.
the kids looked alike, but they were actually hired based on their resemblance to the actors playing mike and carol, NOT each other.. fun fact: the girls were selected because they looked like joyce bulifant who was originally cast to play carol.. it was only after the last minute casting change that ann b. davis was added, believing the show would need a funny lady in the mix since florence didn’t have the comedy credentials joyce did.
The show and its actors may have had problems. Anything real good usually does. To be honest it is a forever show. There appears to be something for everyone and there are lessons that can be learned. I think Alice is someone that everyone adored and wished they had around their home as a forever friend. I turn on the Brady Bunch sometimes just to watch my kids roll their eyes or just to have fun looking at the opening song. Before I know it the kids and I have watched 3 episodes and want more.
I grew up in the 60’s & 70’s, so ya, I watched this The brady Bunch, plus many others, like Gilligan’s Island, Lost in Space, etc. from time to time, but usually, I enjoyed being outdoors with my friends after school all the time, and when my dad got home from work, he had 100% control of “HIS” Tv set, and he always watched the news, so I grew up perusal the news after 5pm till bedtime.
When I grew up in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Brady Brunch was often shown as the “afternoon fillers” for lower ranking TV stations. Unfortunately, none of them were closed-captioned at that time. I finally came across the DVD set with CC and started binge-watching each and every episode. I truly enjoyed the serial very much. One thing that jumped out was showing the close-up of automobile seat belt (purportedly as “public service announcement”) in the car. It was shown probably twice in the entire run. Many times the family members just packed in the cars without any consideration for the safety.

I have never been able to make sense of the outside of the house before the next scene, usually after adverts. I’m not sure if anyone else is confused by the fact that the house looked one story but when inside the house has a basement a huge flight of stairs to the second floor and then we can’t forget the attic 🤔 and don’t forget the den room ! 😡 ffs 🤦🏼♂️ how many stories did this one level house have hidden in itself! Uh, so Carol Tyler married a man named Martin and had three kids with him. Then she remarried a man named Brady. BFD. That’s how it works. What are the writers doing that’s “sneaky”? I can see if Schwartz wanted her to have been divorced, and ABC to not allow it, so good on him to just never mention her former husband. So leave it at that, none of this “sneaky” garbage. I always got the impression that it was deliberately ambiguous about what happened to the former spouses, and never spelled out.
I never did like the Brady Bunch when I was a kid, I thought the show was stupid, really boring, I may have watched it three or four times back then, but I always seem to change the website before it was over. In my opinion one of the worst shows if not the worst that was ever on TV !…. oh yeah and that Oliver kid, never heard of him !
I remember perusal this when it was first broadcast in New Zealand, which may have been a year or two after it debuted in the US. It was a look at a rather foreign culture which didn’t make much sense to us where I lived. My fave character : Alice the housekeeper. Why did she dedicate so much of her life to this family? But, re: Cousin Oliver, I did think he would have been better for the Brady ‘s and the audience to go back to wherever his cousins were. He was not a winning personality, and how he got onto the show is a complete mystery.
Omgoodness I just realized the connection. The girl Bobby kissed in The Brady Bunch (Melissa Sue Andersen) also starred in Little House on the Prairie. And one episode Mary on Little House went to see her fiance with Pa (Michael Landon). She got dumped at a ball dancing and on the train going back home Bobby (Mike Lookinland) was also on the train and she and him started talking up a storm. Pa knew Mary would be okay after being dumped. I LOVED perusal THE SHOW. I didnt have any favorites. Knew what a family was all about because my parents were the Brady’s with a little crazy added in🤣
Thank you for the enlightenment of the Brady Bunch. I think I watched every episode at least twice if not more. My favorite character was Cindy. I was a little older than her character and we share the same name (I spell my name different though). And I thought Greg was a “fox”. HGTV recently renovated the Brady house. Amazing how we all are!❤️❤️
I went to the same elementary school as most of the Brady kids in the 60s, when the show was going. I did not know this until a couple years ago when I was told on the phone, by Mike Lookinland himself. I was asking about an event in my elementary school back then involving him. I had no idea most of them went there. But he said they only had to be in school two weeks a year. in third or fourth grade I was jumped and beat up on by him. A case, it turns out from what he said two years ago, of mistaken identity. Lockhurst Drive Elementary School, Woodland Hills, CA I wish I had known back then that I went to school with Marsha Brady!
We always stopped playing outside just before Brady Bunch came on. We’d be glued to the small black & white TV set! Me & my younger sister would talk about each episode. We both loved Marsha. All the popular girls in school wanted to be her. I always thought Peter was the best looking boy. I don’t remember cousin Oliver. I entered high school in 1975 and the BB was not shown. I was now becoming a big girl. The last season they went to Hawaii and Mike and Greg got perms. We didn’t like that style even though it may have been somewhat popular in 1974 Hollywood. We preferred their normal looking hair styles. We were poor and could not relate to such a big house and such a big family. It was a great show that was uplifting and always had a positive message.
The only show I remember from the 60’s “Laugh In” and CBS presents which was the same damn thing every week: another close up of the VietNaw war. When Walter Cronkite went off on a tangent about the futility of the war, Lyndon Johnson was heard to have said, “we have lost the war, because we have lost Walter Cronkite.”
How does having a different last name from her maiden name make her divorced and not widowed? Where do you think those 3 girls game from? Also, you should have mentioned that in the Brady Bunch movie – of which Sherwood Schwartz was involved with, Carol was said to have been married to Roy Hinkley – The Professor on Gilligan’s Island. If divorced, why would the girls or the boys never mention their other parent?

My fan theory is that Carol and Mike met in the hospital. They had both been called to identify the bodies of their respective spouses because they had both been killed in the same car accident. This confused both Carol and Mike because each believed their respective spouse had been out of town on business. Then they were given the news that drew Mike and Carol together. Mike and Carol both assumed they had crashed into each other, but the police explained they were both in the same car, as they were seeing each other. They were driving from the hotel where they had both had the same room. Carol and Mike were both devastated to discover that their respective spouses had been unfaithful, but it was this fact that had drawn them together. After a great many cups of coffee and a lot of crying they decided to get married. They got a house together and hired a recently widowed late middle age live in house keeper. They learned some time after they hired her that her husband had been killed in a car accident, the same accident that killed Mike’s wife and Carol’s husband. It’s just a fan theory. It doesn’t have to be right.
The kissing commentary is entirely wrong. There is an episode where peter and Greg double date and go to an Italian restaurant unaware that their parents were going to be there. The girls they brought were very aggressive to Peter in particular and there was plenty of kissing going on in their booth. So you either need to remove and amend that statement or rewatch every episode before you, comment
There’s no bloopers here. At one point it says Look at this photo. It’s not edited, ” no bathroom “. And then we see a family photo in the living room. If you’re going to do a history, do it thoroughly. This didn’t include the kids’ on screen romance or the fact that Robert Reed was miserable because he had to stay in the closet. Also, Jan was never portrayed as less pretty, just not as popular. This was misleading and stupid.
If I recall correctly….On The Lucy Show, The character Viv, played by Vivian Vance, was divorced with one son. The Lucy Show premiered in 1962. The Brady Bunch premiered in 1969. I wonder how come Viv on The Lucy Show was allowed to be divorced when it premiered 7 years earlier than The Brady Bunch and Carol was not allowed to be divorced?

Peter was the only one with brown eyes. Bobby was the only boy with blonde hair. My favorite was Alice. I remember perusal an interview in 1994 with Greg from the show. He mentioned how the dad hated the show and was so miserable doing it. And that he was gay, He said might be one reason he was so miserable. Because back then being gay could ruin your career.
A toilet in the bathroom is a modem conceit here in Australia, so not seeing a toilet even if we did pick up on it, wouldn’t have meant anything. When I first heard people saying toothbrushes often have fecal traces on them I was confused because I wondered how those particles could travel from the toilet down the hall into the bathroom lol.
Even “Different Strokes” had a “Cousin Oliver” brought in to the line up. Gary Colman was now the Big Brother to the Red headed Kid of the new Wife of Phil Drummond. They even had a Wedding episode so they were milking it for all it was worth. But l did enjoy Arnold, and l can’t remember the redhead kids name, their chemistry together was a good match as the little brother who Worshipped & Admired his older brother Arnold. “Cousin Oliver” is synonymous with “jump the shark” or “jumping the shark”😂 Referring to the Happy Days episode when Fonzie water ski jumped over a shark while in California. The show was struggling and apparently this was to boost ratings. This is interesting to me that having Carol as a divorcee (in 1969) was a TV taboo, yet the character of Vivian Bagley on The Lucy Show in 1962—7 years earlier, WAS a divorcee! What an odd omission that there’s mention of the fact that Robert Reed was gay. Over the years, several colleagues, such as Florence Henderson, have talked about this. Reed had been married for a few years in the 50s and had a daughter. He was extremely closeted, deeply anxious that his gayness might come to light: he knew this would end The Brady Bunch and destroy his career. He was loved and admired by the other cast members; most were aware of his sexual orientation.
