Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was sentenced to 73 months in prison after pleading guilty to two charges in DC District Court. Manafort was convicted of conspiracy and fraud charges stemming from a justice department inquiry into Russian election meddling. He was also found guilty on eight counts that special counsel Robert Mueller’s team had charged him with in Virginia. Both men are charged with conspiring together and with others to transfer funds from outside the United States to and through places inside the country.
Manafort is charged with 18 counts of tax evasion, bank fraud, and hiding foreign bank accounts in the first case brought to trial by special counsel Robert Mueller. He pleaded guilty last September to two felony counts – conspiracy against the US and conspiracy to obstruct justice – related to his lobbying. He also agreed to cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The charges are part of an effort to ensure he will still face prison time if President Trump pardons him for his federal crimes. Manafort conceded to committing several federal crimes and agreed to cooperate with the Justice Department. The two criminal trials of Manafort were the first cases brought to trial by the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
