Is Magic The Maze Of Magic A Good Thing?

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is a Japanese fantasy adventure manga series directed by Koji Masunari and produced by A-1 Pictures. The anime features an engaging cast, unique magic system, and thorough worldbuilding. However, it suffers from inconsistent art and animation, unnecessary changes to season 1’s final arc that aren’t addressed in season 2, and a major cliffhanger ending that leaves the anime unfinished. The series has two seasons, one being labyrinth and the other being kingdom of magic.

The anime has received positive reviews on MyAnimeList (8.10/10), but the last three episodes of the first season were criticized for deviating from the manga. The series follows Aladdin and Alibaba as they attempt to penetrate the secrets of The Dungeon and obtain treasures. Despite its fun plot setup, Magi: The Magic of Labyrinth has some startling violence, outdated humor, and questionable cultural representation.

The animation is very good, and the dubbed voice acting is solid. The show introduces new characters and makes them relevant to the story and its viewers. However, it’s not a complete anime, with some lewd/ecchi scenes but not filled with them.

  • I look back on Magi fondly, though never finished season 1 back in 2013. Rewatching episode 1 with a friend, however, I actually found it to be pretty lackluster. Halfway through it kinda felt like they were just kicking around the bucket, having Alibaba constantly playing the monkey’s butt to the fat guy despite the fact he has an acquaintance with a powerful jinn. Something about it didn’t strike it as right to me, but eh. Hopefully rewatching episode 2 or even 3 will make me remember why I enjoyed the anime, but episode 1 was pretty much not what I expected or hoped for.

  • I dropped it years ago after I felt like it had no direction. The story seemed to be going one direction but then went the complete opposite diving into unrelated things that weren’t as interesting to me. For example, at some point the anime seemed to focus so much more on Sinbad for fanservice that the rest of the main 3 characters got neglected. I watched “Labyrinth of Magic” and as soon as Sinbad came in it’s like the story lost the plot. I was expected to care about him and what he had going on just because a bunch of fan girls on the internet ogled over him. I was really interested in Alibaba, Aladdin, and Morgiana’s characters in the adventure/dungeon aspects and wanted them to explore the djinn more but all that seemed to take a backseat for the geopolitical aspects of a kingdom I didn’t really care about. Idk maybe I dropped it right before it got good, that’s just my take.
