Is Reading Tarot Cards Bad?

Tarot cards, a form of divination condemned by the Bible, are often associated with fraudsters and black magic. However, this misconception is not entirely accurate. Tarot cards are not inherently evil or dangerous, but rather tools that can provide guidance, self-reflection, and personal growth when approached with an open mind.

The short answer is no, as Tarot cards are not evil. They are a deck of 78 cards rich with symbolism and iconography designed to tell a story. The belief that tarot cards hold sway over one’s life negatively can be influenced by how they are presented rather than the actual cards themselves.

The negative stigma attached to tarot cards originated from horror movies and scary stories that painted them out to be evil tools. Today, Christians should avoid tarot cards and seek alternative spiritual practices.

Tarot cards are not inherently evil or dangerous, but they can be useful for personal growth and guidance. They can be read at any time of day or night, and can be used to help others understand their lives.

In conclusion, Tarot cards are not evil or dangerous, but rather a tool for personal growth and self-reflection. Christians should research and discover alternative spiritual practices, as well as the relationship between astrology and horoscopes, to better understand and appreciate the potential benefits of Tarot cards.

What culture does tarot belong to?

In English-speaking countries, cartomantic tarot cards are available for novelty and divination. Early French occultists claimed tarot cards had esoteric links to ancient Egypt, Kabbalah, the Indic Tantra, or I Ching. However, scholarly research shows that tarot cards were invented in northern Italy in the mid-15th century and no significant use of tarot cards for divination until the late 18th century. Historians describe western views of the Tarot pack as a “successful propaganda campaign”.

The earliest evidence of a tarot deck used for cartomancy comes from an anonymous manuscript from around 1750. The popularization of esoteric tarot started with Antoine Court and Jean-Baptiste Alliette (Etteilla) in Paris during the 1780s, using the Tarot of Marseilles. French tarot players abandoned the Marseilles tarot in favor of the Tarot Nouveau around 1900, and the Marseilles pattern is now mostly used by cartomancers. Etteilla was the first to produce a bespoke tarot deck specifically designed for occult purposes around 1789, containing themes related to ancient Egypt.

Is tarot card reading true?

Early French occultists claimed that tarot cards had esoteric links to ancient Egypt, the Kabbalah, Indic Tantra, or the I Ching. However, scholarly research reveals that tarot cards were invented in Italy in the early 15th century for playing games, and there is no evidence of significant use of them for divination until the late 18th century. The belief in the divinatory meaning of the cards is closely associated with a belief in their occult properties, which was propagated by prominent Protestant Christian clerics and Freemasons.

From its uptake as an instrument of divination in 18th-century France, the tarot went on to be used in hermeneutic, magical, mystical, semiotic, and psychological practices. It was used by Romani people when telling fortunes and as a Jungian psychological apparatus for tapping into “absolute knowledge in the unconscious”, a tool for archetypal analysis, and even a tool for facilitating the Jungian process of individuation.

Is it safe to read tarot cards?

Tarot cards, like other metaphysical tools, are as safe or dangerous as the messages they deliver. They provide clues into the subconscious and are not harmful themselves. The Tarot is often linked to witchcraft, as many practicing witches use it. However, not all witches use the Tarot. The Tarot is a divination tool used by witches to derive more symbolism and understanding for specific questions. Witchcraft and Tarot can co-exist separately, and reading Tarot does not necessarily mean practicing witchcraft. Both practices involve active engagement with intuition.

What religion does tarot come from?

Is manifesting a sin?

Manifestation is a manipulation of influence to be honored, rather than honoring God. Romans 1:21-26 offers cautionary wisdom, reminding us that those who knew God chose to resist the opportunity to honor Him, leading to darkened hearts and fools. Many people have exchanged the immortal God for images and the truth about God for a lie, serving the creature instead of the Creator. It is important to avoid serving the creature instead of the Creator and to assess cultural trends presented as Scripture. The enemy twisted Scripture to tempt Eve to eat the fruit, and this same trick is still being used today.

Are tarot cards mysticism?

Tarot cards, originally used by Italian nobles and aristocrats as playing cards, evolved into a cornerstone of mysticism and spiritual exploration. They were initially used for skill, strategy, and luck in a game called “tarocchi”. However, they also had hidden potential for unraveling life’s mysteries, divining the future, and exploring the human psyche. Italy played a significant role in this transformation, with the Visconti-Sforza deck, created in the mid-15th century for the Duke of Milan, being one of the earliest surviving tarot decks. The deck’s intricate imagery and symbolism hint at a deeper, more mystical purpose, yet to be fully revealed.

Is it bad to read your own tarot cards?

Reading tarot cards is a skill that can be learned with dedication and openness. However, it’s not always the best choice. Even experienced psychics and card readers don’t do their own readings. Three reasons to reconsider DIY tarot readings:

  1. Learning tarot takes time. Beginners often come with an instructional booklet to understand the symbolism behind each card in the deck. However, it’s important not to assume that these booklets are all you need.

What does God say about divination?

Exodus 22:18, Leviticus 19:26, Leviticus 20:27, and Deuteronomy 18:10-11 all prohibit the practice of necromancy, divination, and soothsaying. These laws are portrayed as foreign and are the only part of the Hebrew Bible to mention such practices. The presence of laws forbidding necromancy proves that it was practiced throughout Israel’s history.

The exact difference between the three forbidden forms of necromancy mentioned in Deuteronomy 18:11 is uncertain, as yidde’oni (“wizard”) is always used together with ob (“consulter with familiar spirits”) and its semantic similarity to doresh el ha-metim (“necromancer” or “one who directs inquiries to the dead”) raises the question of why all three are mentioned in the same verse. The Jewish tractate Sanhedrin distinguishes between a doresh el ha-metim, a person who would sleep in a cemetery after starving himself, to become possessed, and a yidde’oni, a wizard.

In summary, the prohibition of necromancy in the Hebrew Bible is a significant aspect of Jewish history.

  • Oml it’s so hard to find a article like this! I don’t think I’m fortune telling either, bc nothing in the future is like set and stone, so I read is just a possibility, and confirmation of intuition. And I’m done wasting my energy convincing people it’s not evil, sometimes they watch too much false depictions of it on media (tv etc…). THANK YOU! Love, light and gratitude 💕

  • This article really eased my mind! I previously was scared of tarot because I came from a Christian upbringing and saw people like Doreen Virtue condemning and denouncing it as “evil”. Now I know it’s just a tool for love, light, healing and intuition. I just did a reading with my dad (who is psychic but is scared of his own abilities/ gifts but also thought it was contacting evil spirits) and he feels much better about tarot knowing it’s just me connecting to my intuition. Thank you for your articles~ I’m manifesting that your website will grow and reach a big audience! You deserve it! 🤩 ✨

  • This is why I hate labels. I am intuitive and an empath, but that doesn’t make me better than anyone else. My gifts are just more in tune because I used my free will choice to be open to it. I use my gifts to help others, because the real gift is when you are able to help others do what you’ve been able to do. And with tarot, I do know the meanings, but I definitely read them more intuitively…and I website. But the reason I use the cards is simply because I connect with the imagery amd Im a visual person. I like the way the messages unfold when I have the cards. I guess its personal preference. Because I website all the time without them lol

  • For my first tarot deck I was gifted for my birthday by my friend who isn’t a tarot reader. Even then I would’ve gotten the deck for myself if I had the money at the time and it connected with me very well. To be gifted something like tarot or a pendent is very nice but we can be drawn to a lot of things from our own intuition and energy. Also tarot won’t invite spirits but it will attract when doing any sort of magic or occult activity you become a beacon but it’s not always evil or bad of course.

  • I just started learning tarot with all positivity in my heart but meanwhile was also coming across articles about tarot being evil. Its did scared me a bit. I am from India and seeking guidance from Spiritual gurus or any other mean is normal, we believe the guidance is given by higher consciousness. This encouraged me to continue learning with little fear but your article cleared all my fear. Thank you so much😊🙏

  • So silly, “you can’t read for yourself.” That is exactly how you learn and practice 😂 I’ve always been fascinated by them since I was a kid, my uncle even had a hand drawn set he made and ever since seeing those I’ve wanted to make my own (it is a huge project to undertake though so it hasn’t come to fruition yet! 😅) I have always been a bit sensitive, I’ve had dreams that come true and I’ve been able to energy work since childhood even before I really knew what it actually was that I was doing, but now I love drawing for friends and family. I still don’t know all the meanings and I have to look them up in most cases but I do have the intuition to pull the right cards bc they always tell me it’s wild the things I read back to them even when we haven’t caught up on all the goings on! It’s a joy and a pleasure 😊

  • I can see, I am clairvoyant. And I’ve never owned any tarot cards, but I’ve always been drawn to them and I’m learning tarot on yt. I have always heard that they invite bad spirits, BUT I’ve been able to sense energy ( good and bad)from a young age so I disagree w the fact that it invites negative energy. Thank you, the article was very informative ❤

  • All 78 cards are connected with each other. The Death card represents a transformation and a new beginning. The cards are just paper with pictures on them there is no scientific evidence that spirits are connected with the decks. What I do when I get a new deck I ask it what type of deck it is and whatever card pops out is the energy of that deck.

  • So glad you made this article! I just came from a article where a guy who was an ex-satanist said when he read tarot, demons would tell him things about the people he was reading for. Face-palm. Also, the whole “you have to be gifted your first deck.” The tarot is made up of human archetypes… thus, if you incarnate into this reality you are born with those archetypes within yourself and that gives us all license to use it.

  • So if you are reading this and you have been told a future prediction that worries you I would suggest to you that we always have the power to change our future. Be very clear you know what you are asking for. I think peaking around the corner is fine but personally if I had someone read my Tarot I would say, “No long term future predictions please.” Steps you could take to limit the chance of a bad reading Say a prayer before you read or are read for and ask that all that comes from this reading will be for your greater good. Picture it going well. If you get a bad feeling that you shouldn’t go ahead with a reading then don’t do it. You need to trust your instinct. Try to get a recommendation from someone who has already seen that person. Then ask how did they present information and was there anything that worried the person about the reading. Be careful what you ask for. Are you ready for all the possible answers to that question? What will you do with the answer? I love the Tarot and have been studying and using it for more than twenty years and most Tarot readers will have only your best interest at heart and will hopefully weave a wonderful picture that is empowering. Tarot readings can be really useful to help us see our lives more clearly and personally and I think it is really exciting. Good luck!!

  • I think the Bible was written long time before the first tarotcard came. So in that case it’s something who came afterwards in the Bible to control the people and they could not know anything about tarot when the Bible was written.I also don’t think that God who is allmighty should be worried about tarot and tarotreadings to help someone else or yourself.

  • Hii since I’m just 14 i didn’t understand a thing😅 but may i ask if tarot cards are evil because i was defending my girlfriend from a old girl like 29 years old at text then she said she pulled a idk i forgot what it says and she said she reads a tarot cards and says seems like someone might die soon I’m kinda scared so can you please tell me if tarot cards are evil thanks!

  • Hi! I have a deck of Rider-Waite tarot cards. I have them because I really like the art of the cards. I do not use the cards because, come on, they are cards and don’t tell you anything. I don’t believe in divination, psychic readings, or horoscopes, it’s all nonsense. Moreover, as a Catholic, engaging in divination is a BIG no-no and believing that these mere cards have power to foresee future events or opportunities is certainly idolatry. Heck, it’s not like the cards are some ancient tool devised by wizards or witches, they began as just another style of playing cards in the 1400s and only became “associated” with the occult in the late 1700s. Big deal. The cards aren’t intrinsically evil, but people can certainly use them in a way that is problematic. However, I do find the Rider-Waite illustrated cards lovely to look at only in an aesthetic sense. So, I say enjoy the beauty of your cards, play card games with them all you want, but don’t expect the cards to have some mystical ability to tell your future or offer sacred knowledge or guidance. You’ll be better flipping a coin for heads or tails, or playing one potato, two potato!

  • Great, great article. Very genuine information coming from you. Thanks. Do you think about how Jesus represents the Sun archetype in astrology and represents the age of Pisces? Plus, tarot and astrology are like the same thing, so how can a Christian hold onto the idea that any of it is evil? Isn’t that interesting?

  • 9:35 For years I was told Being bi or gay is not a sin..it’s a myth rooted in belief, not universal truth. Heaven and hell are concepts, not destinations. If expressing this leads to condemnation, so be it. Books and tarot cards reflect our projections, not divine truths. Intuition is a skill honed over time, not a mystical gift.

  • You need to repent for leading Gods people astray or you will be judged for it. This isnt a scare tactic i say this out of love . Any Tarot cards, Ouija board, necromancy, sage, crystals … Is demonic . These are not your ancestors guiding you are communicating with evil spirits. Repent and put your faith in God if you have any questions go to God who created you the one who know everything about you . Dont let this person deceive you . Jesus is the only way He is the way the truth and the light.

  • I would watch tarot readers that mention God and even pray before the reading. However, I’ve come to really pick up the Bible (not only that, but join bible study) and GOD + divination/the occult (tarot, chakra, meditation, etc) CANNOT even be in the same sentence. God denounced anything that isn’t of HIM. I couldn’t believeeeee this LOL. But man was I in for a rude awakening when I went to search for the page of 1/10 of the tarot readers I loved… the first tarot reader I ever watched tbh… and she had changed her website COMPLETELY. She would pray and tell us to seek God… if anyone said God DIDNT like tarot or these things, I would’ve laughed so hard in their face because I really believed in it. Even angel numbers. Okay back to the story, sorry… so she became a makeup website and everything about God flew out the window! Everyone in the tarot industry began to expose her. I can only imagine the others I used to watch… they probably haven’t got caught yet. However the biggest thing I learned in the young lady getting exposed… that all the tarot readers and believers in tarot shared: YOU CANNOT PUT GOD AND DIVINATION IN THE SAME SENTENCE. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. I am on day 3 of a 7 day fast and I’ve been in the Bible everyday, praying, and crying. The devil is working so hard to try to confuse us. God bless.
